Natu tally I was interested nnd upon Inquiry I was pained to learn that the untlre force with tho exception of one ordinary gill who was only u sub-i carter, had passed adversely, and with promptness, upon tho manuscript. Not only that, but the) were laughing to tscorn the poor Bub-teadcr, who, notwithstanding, Insist ed that it vrus the funniest thing she had ever tend, and, ot Us kind, tho most en tertaining. Howevei, It was u case of many against one, and tho manuscript was returned. "I did not give tho matter any turthor tnought Just then, but the next duy or daj nfter tho BUbject of manuscripts camo up In u talk I was having with Soneso of tho old publishing firm, and I told him tho tale of the rejected manu fccript, and suggested that In my Judg ment tho opinion of tho girl who repre sented the class who bought because they liked them was far belter In n business xenso than the opinion of critics who judged a hook from the critical point nf view, critics not being book buyers as a. tub!. It struck htm us n good paint, und ho asked me to toll Habbertbn to offer tho manuscript to him. In tlmo both poems camn back to him and ho was disconsolate, for ho knew they wcro good enough to pilnt, and ho could not understand why both of them should get it In tho neck llko that. As there was nothing clso to do and ho did not want to lose all his work, ho did tho best ho could, and simply re versed tho operation, sending the first piece to B and tho other to A, In due time he heard from each and In each let ter was a check," "The experience of tho other litterateur was somewhat different. Ho sent a shAt sketch to a leading periodical of the lighter kind, which nlso published a col lection of things clipped from nespaprs and other places all over the world, of fering therefore money prizes of from ono to three dollars for tho best ones ptesent- ed. Ho was ruther hopeful of tho suc-1 cess of his little offering, for he had ben there before; but, lo! It came back to him with a promptness that made procrasti nation seem a virtue. He rallied and sent It to another editor, and this time, though not exactly where ho wanted himself to appear, ho got and received his money for his effort. Two or three months later he happened one day to pick up the prize collections of sl-etches published b the other fellow, and there, at the head of tho column, ns the winner of the highest pilzo In Its clf9, wna tho story which had been before weighed In the balanco and found wanting." m 'I ho Mun Who Won. Tho publica tion of the report of the Maine board of Inquiry resulted In a rebound of prices on the stock exchange and theso ad vances at the high point of tho day had wiped out a large proportion of the losses which have occurred since the explosion In Havana harbor. This was brought about by the movement of the bear traders to take their profits. The liquidation of the last few weeks had left the supply of stocks very small. When the shorts began to bid therefore they found great bull opera tors lit full competition with tho main bidding up prices. The result was a scramble by the shorts, which reached the proportions of a bear panlo during the day and sent prices skyward. The apprehensions of the bears were fed by a printed report from Washington that Spain had completely acted to all President McKlnley's requests, includ ing nn armistice between Cubans and Spaniards for six months. Closing prices were, however, by no means nt the highest, the specialties showing re actions ranging up to 4t, points in Met ropolitan street railway.
