THE MARKETS.
Wnll Street Itevtctv.
New York, Match 14. The stock and
bond markets vveie strong throughout
today. Dlffeient opinions were offered
n.-. to the cnuso ,f this and probably
had borne truth In them. That the ex
co'.s of buojancy was a surprise to
nu ny profession 1 traders, even to
thot.0 who expected some naturil le
'toi'nd from Saturday's excessive de-pu-Mon,
vvns evident. Theie was noth
ing in the news of the duy to change
r'ntc-rlally the x)litlcal outlook and
that tliete were many holders of secur
ities who continued nervous was evi
dent from the large offerings to real
ize with the sharp rise nt the opening,
but the reaction which resulted from
these ofTeilngs was moro than over
come, even thewe steicks vv'hlch showed
the largest gains at the opening ris
ing again to the highest and those
which had been less affected at the
opening rising In some cases over a
point above tho early high prices. The
firmness of prices wa sustained to the
close. Total sales were 436.G00 shares,

delivered by llev, W. A. Carrlngton,
Jiewly-clected pastor of tho Forest City
Presbyterian ohuroh, on Sunday Inst.
"Math. 1.21. 'And thou shall call his
name Jesus for he shnll sae Ills peo
ple from their sins.'
"The liestowmont ot n suitable name
upon tho new born child is one of Hie
first questions which perplexes Its won
dering parents. "Tho name," says
Cnrlyle, "Is tho earliest garment you
wtnn around the eaith vlsltlhff one to
which It thenceforth cleaves mora
tenaciously than the very skin." Oh',
the Influenco of names! Call one ti
thief, f,ays the proverb, nnd he will
steal, Thus do pious or ambitious par
entis often seek to mark out the destiny
of their child, by stamping It with
tome Illustrious or suggestive name,
which' It la fondly hoped will becomo
Inwrought Into character and life. In
Hrasdl the name of soma saint venerat
ed among the people Is given. Buch a
catalogue of names would furnish a
ery sura Index to tho popular Ideal.
Among ourselves we are governed more
by fancy or ns.soclnllon than by tho
significance of the name bestowed.
Originally, however, all names were
significant. This was particularly so
among the Hebrews, where the name
of the child originated In some Incid
ent or circumstance connected with Its
blith, expressing some atttlbute of
God such as his power or condescending
mercy, or was a devout expression of
thanksgiving to tho great parent of
every good and perfect sift.
smwFicANcn of names.
"Thus Moses Is from an Egyptian
root, Mosheh, which means "brought
forth," or dtawti out of the water. Hun
nah called her first born Samuel, "heard
of God." Jud.ah signifies "pralsV The
names of the Hebrew people are a re
markable monument to their peculiar
calling as a nation, and to their rich
devotional spirit. And thus with this
nnme .of Jesus, which Is n'mve every
name as hW conception wits by the
overshadowing of the Almighty and nil
the circumstances of his birth, of di
vine ordering, so was not even his
name left to him an Ingenuity or pious
sentiment, but was angel sent and an
gel given.
"His namo Is not a mere verbal ap
pendage to distinguish him from his
fellows, but describes him In his great
central character ns the Savior and
Redeemer of mankind. He has many
names in Scripture, but none other
v hlch so clearly defines hla mission to
seek and to wave that which was lost'
His moral chnrnctei and spotless life
aio worthy of Infinite praise, but his
name fixes our gaze upon him as our
great atoning Sav lor. Hence among all
the names of Chrlit this will shine
throughout all eternity as that which
distinguishes him from all creation, a
name Infinitely pieciuus to the re
deemedJesus the Chilst, for he has
saved us from our sins. To the ic
deemed ftoul no other name suggests
such a delightful train of holy remlnlsi
cence, from no other name has so much
been derived, In no other name Is felt
Mich unwavering confidence, and to no
other name is directed such well
founded hopes,
"All hall," then, "the power of Jesus'
name,
Let nngpls prostrnto fall.
Bring forth tho roj al diadem
And crown Him Lord of all.
Let every kindled, every tllbo
On this terrestrial ball,
To Him nil malesty ascrlbo
And crown Him Lord of all."
"Our text points to him us the only
Savior. Jesus In contradistinction to
every other savior. By ono stroke of
the pen every 'refuge of his' Is swept
away, every false rest, every deceitful
mirage, Jesus, not this church, or that
creed or that ceiemony, but Jesus only,
Is our divinely appointed Savior fiom
the sin which Infests the heart, and
casts its mournful gloom over the life.
Or SALVATION
"This balvation Is a double one, from
the guilt and eventually from the power
of bin. In the gift to this world of
God's onlv fcon, we behold our only
hepe, In him our great atonlnpr satil-
fl e by which our guilt Is purged away,
and the enormous debt which we owed
to justice because of bioken law, and
which retielered us hopelessly Insolvent,
cancelled forever. But salvation fiom
the guilt und eternal consequences of
sin Is only one result of that gieat
work of redemption, Immortalized by
the name of Jesus. He saves his peo
ple not o'llv from the guilt of sin, but
'Jrom their sins.' Fake religion, how
ever brilliantly It may declaim, seeks
to save men in their sins. True rellg
li n ever keeps befoie It one constant
purpose, the complete emancipation of
11 an fiom his sins, sin is detluoned
the moment one hands over the keys
to his heart and life to the Lord Jchus
Clutst, but Its continued piesence Is a
eonttant menace to the believer's frecur
Ity and happiness, and against It ho
must wtgo n life-long conflict In the
first enthuslnsm'of the Christian life,
si i hides Its head In shame, but it
piesenlly comes forth from Its lurking
places, hoping by some sudden stroke
or skilful Btintegy to regain Its lost
ascendancy,
"In that stubborn conflict Jesus
chnrrplons our cause, by furnishing us
In his Word with the armor of his
truth, by endowing us with his Spirit,
anl bv so overruling temptation that
ho will not Buffer us to be tempted
above that we are able but will with
the temptation make a way of escape
that we may bo able to learn It.'
OUR DUTY DEFINED.
"In this life work the divine and
human must co-operate. It is our duty
to crucify sin so far as we recognize It
In our life, to avoid unnecessarily ex
posing ourselves to temptation but
'being In to bear It that the opposer
may beware of thee,' and to arm our
Belves with the whole armor of God as
St, Paul directs In the sixth chapter of
the Epheslans, that we may 'withstand
In tho evil day.'
"So helping ourselves Jesus will be
present with his almighty power to en
nble us to lead victorious lives over sin
and finally completely emancipate us
from Its thraltdoin, presenting us
'faultless before the presence of his
glory with exceeding Joy,' The ring
ing chorus of heaven will be 'unto him
who hath redeemed us to God by thy
blood out of every kindred, und tongue,
and people, and nation; and hast tnaelq
u unto our God kings and priests.' "
