All of tho candidates were the recip
ients of many congratulations yester
day by their friends. The defeat has
had a very dlsplrltlnp effect on Demo
crats, coupled with the losses sustained
In common council. It was expected
by the Democratic candlilates for
places on tho board of six that a very
large vote would be polled In all of the
strong Democratic wards on account
of fleice lights for uatd ofllces In nearly
all of them. This pioved to be a mis
take. The fierce watd tights Injured
lather than helped the candidates at
the head of the ticket In some waids,
while In others Democratic voters be
came disgusted and refrained alto
gether from voting.
HEPUHLICAN8 VOTED,
llenubllcnns In general showed a
fommcndably p.atiiotlc desire to do
their duty and the vote in nearly all of
the Republican strongholds was larger
than the estimates made by political
prophets on the dnv before election.
Fred, lieigo was probably one of the
most surprised men In the city yester
day, lie was nominated by the Demo
crats as their candidate for poor direc
tor in the Third and Twenty-firfct, and
ns he had no apparent opposition, took
things easy. John JIcNamnra thought
he would like to be a poor director and
went quietly to work to defeat Mr.
Herge. He accomplished the feat,
.securing 202 against 157 votes cast for
Mr. Herge.
James Manlev and Morgan Sweeney
ore much chagrined over their defeat
In the Twelfth ward. They knew they
had a big flght on their hands, but were
confident they would pull out with
otes to spare. Mr. Manley has been
select councilman from the Twelfth
for eleven years and Mr. Sweeney has
represented the ward In the lower
branch for six yeais. Thomas J. Coyne
Is elated over his second victory over
Mark Cahlln In the Twentieth ward.
His friends, accompanied by a band,
will visit him tomorrow night to cele
brate his victory.
Probably no man In the city was
n oie flnceroly congratulated yester
dav than Edward James, jr., the new
select councilman from the Hlxth ward.
In Democratic circles M, E. Clark and
John K Regan were loundly abused for
engaging In a light that had the efftct
of giving the office of select council to
a Republican.
CORDON iJRIEVP.P.
There was real evidences of sorrow
about Hip headquarters of P. P. Gordon
in the Second ward yesterday. He
thought ho waa stronc enough to de
leat Wade M. Finn, the present select
councilman from that vard, but the
latter convinced him it was not u task
to bs lightly undertaken.
Ex-City Assessor Thomas O'Boyle,
the new Delect councilman from tho
Eighteenth ward will bring to the du
ties of his Dlllce a wide experience In
municipal affairs. He said yesterday
that Tuesday's flght in the Eighteenth
v. as one of the liveliest he ever partici
pated In.
