yesterday with friends In this place.

a term of one year In the First ward,
to succeed Thomas P. McCotmlek, who
was appointed to fill n vacancy caused
by the removal of Arnett Bennett from

First wnrd and one In the Second, for
n term of three years each, to succeed
F. J. Hood and A. L. Morgan: n Judce

ward. There Is said to be no dearth
of candidates, which shows that In
patriotism we are right In the proces
sion. Frank Powderly, who became Insane
last week, is recovering and will not
have to be token to Danville.
The art exhibition under the aus
pices of the Methodist church will be
contlnuted In the II. W. Brown build
ing on Monday and Tuesday evenings
of next week. The display of repro
ductions from celebrated paintings is
very fine and is also extensive. Thei
Is nn Interesting collection of oil paint
ings and pastel work by local artists.
John It. Budd has resigned from the
council.
While Chris Wilts, of Forest City,
was driving Into Scranton. he wns int.
down by a street car. His horse had
its back broken, but the dilver fortu
nately escaped injury. The accident
occurred after dark.
Hillside Hose company has Just pur
chased a team of horses for its new
hose wagon. They are a glossy black,
weigh eleven hundred irplece, and nv
beauties. The price was ?:!00, and a
$1"0 drop harness has been ordered.
The horses and the new wagon will
be used in responding to nil fires as
soon as the harness arrives. New hose
has also recently been purchased and
new uniforms are talked of. There's
nothing slow about Hillside Hose com
pany. The Carbondale Traction company
has agreed to build a bridge for Its
own use over the creek at the south
ern end of the town, do a certain
amount of paving whenever paving Is
decided upon, and conform with the
various other requirements demanded
by the council, If they are granted a
franchise to come Into the borough, nut
they say they cannot come farther
than Center street, on account of a
lack of power. The council will meet
In a few (lavs to consider the matter.
Residents of the Second ward are very
much opposed to the granting of a
right of way, unless the company ex
tends its line as far north as the Clif
ford breaker. It looks as If the Trac
tion people would have to get more
power or stay out.
