Some of our local sportsmen have been
severely criticising the new game laws,
especially that part ot It pertaining to
squirrels. The season not opening till Oct.
jr. and closing Dee. 15, shortens up tho
time twenty-live days and dies not glvo
my chance to compete with their i.lty
friends. Ry tho time tho farmers get
their crops gathered and can llnd time to
hunt their city cousins havo all tho gamo
"hugged" ,ind tho season Is about to
close. Ono of the respected residents of
liardwell said n few days ago that there
had been lots of squirrels on his prem
ises, but they (tho rural hunters), had
gut them all killed off. Report also comes
with good authority from Glenwood,
i:.tst Lemon and various other places that
tho farmers have been shooting squirrels
and pheasants for tho past month. Oh,
mi. Tho farmer won't get any gamo un
der tho new law. Tho fads of tho case
are those: That wo might Just as well
not hao any llsh and gamo wardens to
that ilio laws uro enforced, therefore

THE MARKETS.
Wnll Street ItRvtcn
Now York, Oct- 4. There was llttlo
moro In today's market than a running
contest between tho bulls and bears, in
which tho bulls wcro successful during
tho early .part of the day, but In which tho
bears turned tho tldo later and put tho
opponents to route, wiping out all tho
galas of the earlier trading. Thero was
everything in the bulls' favor In tho
early market, the lively buying on Sat
urday having apparently reassured for
eign capital, so that prices In London
wcro advanced from 1 to 2 points. Tho
higher prices Invited heavy sales and
tho bears added tho pressure ot short sell
ing. Quito a number of the less actlvo
stocks escaped tho lato liquidation and
retained net gains, but the closing level
of tho market as a whole was decidedly
lower. Sugar was an active feature and
Its weakness was material In breaking
tho general market In tho afternoon. To
tal sales were 430,700 shares.
