THE MARKETS.
Wnll Street Review
New York, Aug. 31. Today's stock mar
ket was characterized by great Irregu
larity, prices of many stocks remaining
ramarkably stable, oven on large trans
actions, whllo the prlco movement of
others was wide and erratic to the Inst
degree nnd quite Independent of any gen
eral lnullenco or harmony of tendency
with others. Sugar was the scnsatloiril
feature nnd coveted a range of nearly
eight points' during the day. Thero vAs
no news regarding tho stock received
during tho day that was not known at tho
opening of the market. Hut tho specula

tho facts already known that led to very
excited trading In tho stock. The specu

the Industry from the treasury depart

tariff bill discriminating ngalnstsugar from
counres that pay an export bounty. Tho
belief that this clause would be admin

competition of Dutch refined sugars gao
countries that pay an export bounty. Tho
stock Jogged along very comfortably on
tho up grado to noon, covering about a
point In the rise. Tho price then made a

tho reaction being comparatively small.
