BERNSTEIN MEETS WRIGHT TONIGHT Tliey Will Spar Twenty Rounds at Music Hall. BOTH ARE IN GOOD CONDITION Tho Two Hnvo Never Slot nnd tho Itnsult of tho Hout Menus Much to tho Wlnncr--i:ncli Possesses a Sool ItcconW-IInvo Trnincd Hnrd for This .Meeting--Itcduccd Prices of Admission. Tonight will ho seen In Music Hall tho boxing bout to which the sporting fraternity of this city have, been look ing forward for several weeks. Tho principals, Joe Hernsteln and Fred Wright, have for several days been on FKKD WRIGHT. the ground and engaged in putting tho finishing touches to their training. They will box twenty rounds at catch weights. It Is quite likely that Pat Murphy will be the referee. This point had not been definitely settled last night, but ho Is acceptable to both parties, nnd will probably be chosen. Murphy is an honest, conscientious fellow, and lias an nverslon to assuming tho respon sibility that goes with the refereelng of such an important star event, but he would bo a popular official with tho hundreds of admirers of the two prin ciples, and It is to be hoped that he will accept the task. AT CATCHWEIQHTS. Tho two men were matched to meet at 121 pounds. Each had trained to within about two pounds of that weight when the cold and rulny weather began a week ago, and it was seen that they both would bo weakened by taking off llesh. It was then agreed to enter the ring at catchwelghts. Bernstein has been In this city with his manager, Charles Horan, and Wright with his trainer, Jim Reynolds at Judge's es tablishment in Plttston. As far ns condition Is concerned, both are "as fit as fiddles." Seranton has seen some good boxing in tho past year, and some bad, in fact, more of the latter than the for mer. It Is not to bo wondered at that tho talent has been a little shy of giving up good admission money for poor entertainment, but in the present case the writer believes that those pres ent will get a run for their wealth. Wright is not ns well known In Seranton as Is Bernstein, but In and about New York city they are consid ered at evens, and are recognized as entitled to receive attention from tho very best men in the featherweight class. In his twenty-round bout with McMahon here Inst February, Bern stein proved himself every bit as clever as this city's pride, Jimmy Judge, though, of course,, in a lighter class. So when It Is remembered that Wright Is believed to be as good a man as Bernstein, tho Seranton audience can get and Idea of the kind of sport that Is to be witnessed. Wright and Bern stein have never fuced each other. BKBNSTEIN AT WORK. Bornsteln s work In the Seranton Bi cycle club gymnasium during tho past few days has been watched by scores of people. He has punched the bag, boxed, wrestled nnd exercised with the pulley-weights for an hour and a half each afternoon with scarcely a mo ment's rest and has finished strong and with no evidences of fatigue. Those who saw him work were satisfied he is In splendid trim'. The samo reports eomo from Plttston regarding Wright, who, because he is less known here, is not to be despised. Tho result to night means a great deal to the win ner's future and on that nccount, as well ns the condition of both men, a battle royal may be expected. Bernstein has done his early training at Coney Island and Wright at College Point. Tho records of tho two are as fol lows: BERNSTEIN. Defeated Young Leonard, 1 round; Jack Connovs, 5 rounds; George Justice, 8 and 10 rounds; All Allen, 8 rounds; Jlmmlo Percell, S rounds; Bllllo Hanson, 3 rounds, Larry Lnrkins, 5 rounds; Charley Loo pold, 4 rounds; Jack Connors, 19 rounds; Harry Fisher, 4 and 0 rounds; George Blackley (colored). 3 rounds; Dolly Lyons, 4 rounds; Jack Sullivan, 3 rounds; Young llltchel, 2 rounds; Jack Larklns, 7 roundu; Jack Nelson, 5 rounds; Denny Lyons, 8 rounds; Eddy Nelson, 11 rounds; Dan Mc Maln, 4 rounds. Draws With Martlo McCue, 20 rounds; Dolly Lyons, 8 rounds; Joo Falrbun, 0 rounds; Splko Sullivan, 10 rounds; Eddie Hayes, C rounds; Frank Bryant (colored), 13 rounds; Bllllo Whistler, 13 rounds; Charley Kelley, 8 rounds; Georgo Justice, 10 rounds; Jack McKeck, 4 rounds; Tom Brady, 4 rounds. Lost Sammy Kelley, 10 rounds; Blllle Whistler, 15 rounds; Billy O'Donnell, 20 rounds, WRIGHT. Defeated Owen Doroty, 3 rounds; Mike Donovan, 8 rounds; Jack Burke, 12 rounds; Jerry Sullivan, 10 rounds; Denny Ma honey, 4 rounds; Dan O'Leary, 10 rounds; Hugh Fltzslmmons, 10 rounds; Jack Mul len, 10 rounds. Draws With Mlko Sears, 10 rounds; Jim. mlo Cnvtner, 10 rounds; Joe Falrburn, 0 rounds; Frank Bryant, 10 rounds; Joe I'urdy, 10 rounds; Barney Rclley, 10 rounds. IMIINi Tho quick way In which Bornsteln polished oft Dolly Lyons recently In New York, and tho way ho punched big "Splko" Bulllvan nbout for ten rounds was proof enough of his ability. That Wriftht is fulry aware of tho character of tho man that he Is golns to meet is shown by tho manner In which ho has trained for tho contest. Heretofore Wright has taken thlnjrs rather easy, not so this time, however, for he has been up early each morning1, out on the road getting his muscles hard and seeing that his wind appetite was gel ting in proper trim. Wright In his training has been having the assist ance of some of the best boxers in tho business nnd that ho lias been taught some new tricks cocs without a word of doubt. If Wright succeeds In defeating Bern stein, tho former's manager and train er, Jim IJeynolds, Is prepared to -back him with $2,D00 ngalnet the little col ored wonder, Goorgo Dlxon, for the championship of the world. Wright la conscious therefore that a great deal depends upon the result of the present battle, and will exert every fnl.- means at his command to win. Jack Skclly, of Brooklyn, manager of this city's American Sporting club, nnd who has handled hundreds of lexers and made hundreds of matches, thinks that Bernstein and Wright will furnish ono of tho prettiest bouts ever wlt-' ncsse'l In this city. ADMISSION PRICES. An announcement that will bo appre ciated, is that the admission prices will be 50 cents and $1. This ought to help attract one of the larsest audiences of tho kind ever seen In Music hall. SYRACUSE GETS AVCOY-RYAN FIGHT. The Two Middleweight Kings to Bat tle for Big Money Kid McCoy and Tommy Ryan will not box In Buffalo after all. The Olym pic Athletic club of that city made a bid for the contest through Its repre sentative, what they thought in rea son it was worth, but Billy Brady, of New York, Corbett's manager and Mc Coy's ex-manager, went higher and the Empire Athletic club of Syracuse topped even the New Yorker's offer. IcCoy In company with a couple of Buffalonlans on Monday met at the Yates house In Syracuse, representa tives of the Olympic Athletic club of Buffalo, managers of the Empire Ath letic club of Syracuse, and a represen tative of Brady. After a long consul tation the Olympic club offered $3,500 or CO per cent of the gross receipts. Bra ry's man offered $5,000, and tho Empire Athletic club of Syracuse offered the same amount, with the additional fact that they would give 50 per cent, of the house If the money came over $3,000. After a tlmo this was accepted, and both McCoy and Ryan on Tuesday met and signed articles. Tho Syracuse club will pull off tho contest in tho big Alhambra rink In that city, which will accommodate 4,000 people. L0N0W00D TENNIS PLAYING. Three Mntches Between Americans nnd One Between Englishmen. Boston, July 28. Tho third round of the Longwood tennis tournament was played today and consisted of three matches between Americans nnd ono between two of the Englishmen. H. A. Nesblt, who Is rated In England as ninth in the list of tennis cracks, de feated Dr. W. V. Eaves, who is rated third, in three straight sets. The match of the morning was the Lamed G. L. Wrenn contest. Lamed took tho llrst set with ease. The sec ond was not aultc such an easy thing for tho coming chnmplon, and bofore ho knew it, tho games were four all. Darned tried hard to pull out tho set, but Wrenn managed, by steady play, to pass him, and took the set, 6-4, the points being 3S to 34 In Wrenn's favor. Wrenn took the third set also. By this time Lamed realized that he had the hottest kind of a fight on his hands, and by careful play took the fourth set, 6-1, the points being 28 to 1" In his favor. After that he had no difficulty In taking the fifth set, 6-2, and match; tho points on the last set being 27 to 18, making a total of 133 to 115 in Larned's favor. AROUND THE ROPED ARENA.
