In a Gentlemanly Fashion They Take
Severe Drubbing from the
Miners.
There were two prominent character
istics to yesterday's frninc. One wns
the disposition of the Miners to run
bases In a fast and satisfactory way;
the other feature was the extreme
Rood behavior of Buckenberprcr and Ills
Stars, expectations to the contrary
notwithstanding.
It had been noised about that the
Stars were liable to do nnythlng from
thi owing bats at the umpire to tear
ing down a fence, but none of thee
things happened In Scranton even
though the Star3 showed such a dis
position In Sprlngllcld. The roa
eoii for their good conduct may
have been the fact that they were un
der the regulation of an umpire wlu
knows his business or It may have been
that the trend of the game dampened
their ardor. Anyhow, there was no
such monkey-and-parrot time and no
euch courtesies between the managers
as when Buckenberger and his men
paid their last visit to Scranton,
ERRORS COUNTED.
The game was anybody's up to the
eighth Inning when the Miners bee;nn
to pull out and won by a score of 12 to
K, because Olllon pitched not quite aa
badly as did-Willis and because the
Stars were . very -generous with their
costly errors.. ,The second inning was
HlurUil In a Hitting raln'nnd'thero wts
a wait of nearly twenty minutes be
lnre the third Inning began.
For two Innings only six Stars faced
Glllon, thanks to a line running catch
by Walters and a difficult stop by Bon
ner. A base on balls to Walter's and
Smith's fumble In the first wltrf'tine
out gave the Miners a chance, but Eag
nn and Bonner could not connect jiafo.
lv with the ball. In the third a basy on
brlls to O'Brien and singles to Waiters
nnd Beard developed the first run of
the game.
Three Scranton runs were earned In
the fourth on singles by Bonner and
Magulre and Lezotte's slow fielding
which made a three-baser out of Oll
lun's hit to rlslit field, nnd Walters'
Mngle. The Stars got ono on a lva'i;
to Smith. Massey's missed grounder,
which sent Smith to third and an in
field out. Score, 4-1.
With Eagan out on a fly to left, sin
gles by Bonner and Massey put run
ners on first and second. Magulre
Hew out to Schlebeck. Smith fumbled
Ounson's grounder and threw It wild
to Eagan, Bonner scoring. When Eag
an recovered the ball he attempted to
throw Massey out at the plate, but
the ball hit the latter and Guuson
went to 'third during the trouble. In
the Syracuse half after a walk to Shaw
lie and Willis, were retired on a double
play by Bonner and Massey. But it
wasn't to end with the next up, "Bad
Bill" Eagan. Ho received a pass, Gar
ry singled and the two scored on
Smith's two-baser to left-centre. Smith
scoring on I.ezotte's single. A walk
to Earl and Beard's error filled the
bnscs but Schlebeck went out from Ma
gulro to Massey, Score, 6-4.
STARS GAIN A LITTLE.
With ono out In the sixth Walters
hit to left-center for two bases and
Beard wnlked, but a force hit by Eag
an and Bonner's grounder retired tho
dde. For the Stars Shaw hit to right
center for two bases with none out
and scored on two files to O'Brien.
Score C-B,
It only required four pitched balls
to dispose of Massey, Magulre and
Ounson In tho seventh. In their half
tho Stars got three on bases but could
not score. Smith and Lezotto singled,
Earl sacrificed, Bannoni flew out to
Muguirc nnd tho bases tilled on a walk
to Schlebeck. Shaw hit ono in front
of the plate and was thrown out by
OunBon.
In the eighth O'Brien got his third
walk during tho game with one out
Walters flew out to Bannon nnd
O'Brien slid safely to the plate on
Beard's double to right field. Two sin
gles were all that fell to tho portion
of the Stars. Score 7-B.
There was a lot of flrewoiks In the
ninth. Bonner went out on Eagan's
assist. Smith's wild throw to first and
Schlebeck's miss of Maguire'B grounder
put two on the circuit and they scored
on Gunson's drive through left-center
for three bases. Glllon went out from
Smith to Earl, Gunson scoring. O'Bri
en was hit by a pitched ball nnd
came home on Walters' two baser,
Walters scoring on a double by Beard
to right-center. Engan flew out to I1I3
namesake. Mogulre's fumble put Earl
on the circuit but a ily to Walters, a
strike-out and a force hit ended tho
game.
