Robert Stewart, the younc man who took ox-Sheriff Iloulnson'a diamond pin and was then turned over to Chief of Police Hobllng In the Elk cafe on Thursday night, was held under $500 ball by Mayor Ballev yesterday morn ing. Stewart could not furnish ball and was committed to the county Jail tr, await the action of the September grand Jury. Patrick Klllcen, of Olyphant. win was with Stewart at the time was discharged. It now transpires that there was an unseen scene to the little episode In the cafe, a scene behind the "scenes" bo to speak. It took place in Ed. Horn's Franklin avenue saloon and happened JiiRt a few minutes previous to the "rasslc" with the sheriff. Stewart and a number of others of his kind ver giving each other point ers In the buslnof.". It was a session dear to the heart of a crack and at tracted a lot of "talent." Stewart, who Is one of the Now York gang of sharp ers, was one of the chief exponents of the art. Ho had taken an Interest in Klllcen and was teaching him tricks. One of the tricks was tho "diamond snatcher." Klllcen didn't believe It could be dune. Stewart offered to prove It. In looking for r- victim ox-Sheriff Robinson was discovered. Stewnrt said: "Now Kllleen all you have to do is to tell the story, see?" "Tni3t me for that," returned the Olyphant young man. So they went over and began the game with the result a3 stated in yci-terday's Tribune. At the hearing yesterday Stewart pleaded drunkenness. Mayor Bailey, liowevtr, had been apprised of the ex treme cleverness of the trick and Stewart was sent up. Kllleen was dis charged because there was no direct evidence against him. It was learned yesterday that the gang has been doing a lund olllce busi ness In the city since tho races begun. Tho police have hrrd of eight 'well-to-do gentlemen who have been vic timized by the sharpers. Three of them are prominent physicians. The chances for recovering thalr valuables is so meagre that no publicity has beer, given the several thefts. BICYCLE RIDER INJURED. Run Down at Corner of Washington Avenue and Green Kiilgo Street. Mamie Davis, a young girl, was run down by a wagon while she was rid ing her bicycle on Washington avenue near the Intersection of Green Rldgo street yesterday morning. She was quite badly injured and the wheel was smashed. The girl and her aunt, Mrs. II. 13. Da vis, of 1421 Capouse avenue were en Joying a spin yesterday morning and at tho point mentioned a team of horses driven by a drunken man crossed the iilieet and ran Into little Miss Davis. She was thrown under the horses' feet and the wheel was twisted out of shape. The girl was taken from her perilous position and carried into a neighboring house. The gill's injuries are. mostly cuts and bruises from the horses' sharp shoes. She may also be hurt Internally. The name of the man who caused tho trouble Is not known. Driver Thomas Campbell, permanent man for the Phoenix Chemical com pany, had an exciting experience whllo responding to a false alarm from box 41 at 11 o'clock this morning. At the top of South Washington ave nue hill Driver Campbell applied tho brake and the hanger snapped, letting tho welsht of the three ton wagon against the horses. The animals be came frightened and dashed down tho steep hill at a terrific gait. Campbell clung to the reins, but could not stop tho horses until the hill was far behind. The little fellow dis appeared from his home, 410 Taylor avenue, yesterday, nnd his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Walsh, nre anxious as to his whereabouts. Mr. Walsh called at the police station at 11 o'clock. He thinks that the boy has been kidnapped by an organ grin der who was making a tour of Taylor avenue yesterday. Up to a late hour the police had nof heard of the boy. MUST KILL THAT DOG. Mr. Patch Loses a Piece of His Trou sers nnd In Angry, J. J. Patch, "a irlvcr for Conrad's dairy, Is having a great deal of trouble In securing tho execution of a dog which bit him Sunday evening. Tho animal Is owned by II. J. Crossley, of Gibson street, and on Monday Patch requested that the dog bo shot. Crossley refused; The police were then importuned and Patch claims they refused. He then went before Alder man Fldler of tho North End and swore out a death warrant for tho dog. Tho day of execution has not yet been set. CRAVER WAS THE MAN. Formerly u Prosperous Meat Dealer of This City. It developed yesterday that the man found dead In the Stroudsburg hotel, Tuesday, h a Scranton man, W. B. Graver, formerly a butcher on North Main avenue. His brother, H. H. Cravor, of Brook lyn, Susquehanna county, was notined last night of the discovery and will go to Stroudsburg today. Graver's body was Interred yesterday. Four years ago Craver was a proa perous business mnn, his butcher Bhop on North Main avenue litlng consider ed the leading establishment of Its kind on tho West, Side. He failed however, and Mnco then has been try ing to retrieve ,hls fortune in tho bucket shops. Tho last aeon of him hero was last Monday when ho left the St. Charles where he had hoarded for a year and a hnlf, to go presumably on a visit to his relatives In Susquehanna county. Frank Amabroy was'arrested yester day morning for horsewhipping F. E. Carr, the meat merchant of Washing ton avenue. The assault occurred In the wholesale lilock on Lackawanna avenue. Mr. Carr had stationed his wagon near the curb and Amsbrey drove up and demanded that the meat man make room for Amsbrey's wagon. Mr. Carr pointed out to Amsbrey that thero was plenty of room in front and sug gested that he drive that way. Amsbrey became Infuriated and str.ick the aged Mr. Carr with his whip. The lash drew blood from Mr. Carr's right wrist. Amsbrey then lashed Carr's horse. A crowd collected and It would have went hard with the vicious Amsbrey had not Patrolman John Thomas placed him under arrest. This act was applauded by tho crowd. Mayor Ealley held Amsbrey In $300 ball to answer the charge In court. SLACK LIME THE CAUSE. Responsible for u Piro in the Ilnrn ol Conrad Muttcrn, Jr. An alarm of fire was sent In last night at 12.25 a. m. from No. 34. It was caused by a barn owned by Conrad Mattern, jr., of 324 North Bromley ave nue, taking fire from some slacked lime placed therein. Mr. Mattern Is a milkman, and his barn abutB on Ev ans' court. No damage was done, and the services of the Are companies, Franklin and Columbia, were not re quired. Tho humorous part of the fire was the sending of the alarm In from a box about three and a half blocks away when box No. 33 was within a half block. Chief Hlckey added to tho hu mor of the situation by taking the key of box No. 34 fropi the holder with the statement that "he was not fit to have It In his possession." The companies could not find the fire for nt least ten minutes after coming to the box, be cause no one remained to guide them to it. TRIP TO NEW YORK CITY. The mayor had until July G to pass upon the ordinance and If he had not acted then It would have become op erative by default. The text of tho ordinance Is as follows: Section 1. Moilarlty, which took place from the residence of hla mother, Mrs. Cath erine Morlarlty, of 7S1 Orchard street. At St. Peter's cathedral a high mass of requiem was celebrated at 9.30 by Rev. J. W. Malone, who also preached the sermon taking his text from the words of St Bernard, "The Sacraments of the church are an anchor of hope to the dying Christian." During the course of his remarks the spuaker took occasion to refer to the many noble traits of character of the deceased and tho resignation he dis played when It became evident that he must die. Among tho many beauti ful floral tributes wero a pillow In scribed "Our Friend" from the em ployes of tho Times, where Mr. Morl arlty had for several years been em ployed and a large bouquet of roses from Megargee Brothers.
