and a coal train on the Pennsylvania
railroad collided tills morning at Thir
tieth and Spring ClnriUn streets, and
one man, Itobcrt Regan, a llrotnan,
was Instantly killed. Roth engines
were completely wrecked, Involving a
loss of over $10,000.
The freight was the regular berry
train from Dclnwnro to Jersey City,
which makes pass'-ngcr schedule time
from this city to N'nv York. The dead
man lived .it 12 Front street. Jersey
City. The accident Is said to be due to
thp freight engineer's disregarding tho

The Ilcd Ash Vein of the Pettebone
Again on Tiro.
Wllkes-Rnrre, Jul;' 2. Fire broke out
In one of tho chambers of the Red Ash
vein of the Pettebone mine at an early
hour this morning. The fire started
from a blower and communiratcd to
some rubbish. The alarm was given
and all the hose at the colliery was tak
en Into the mine. After an hour or so
of hard work the fire was extinguished.
Men are working In all veins today and
tho breaker Is also running.
It Is fortunate for the 1). I... & W.
compjny and tho miners employed in
the Pettebone that the fire was so eas
ily extinguished. The Pettebone Is
probably the most gaseous mine of nny
In the valley and has already under
went two clisastrou.-i fires, which It
took months to extinguish.

ton Coal company, was instantly killed
at 10.30 o'clock this morning by a fall
of rock. His back was broken.

Teachers' association concluded the
meeting heru yesterday by a visit to
Cascade park, where tho closing ses
sion was held in tho large pavilion.
Resolutions were passed thanking
Governor D. II, listings for having
again appointed Dr. N. C. Shaeffer sup
erintendent of public Instruction, and
regretting that the legislature had
failed to pass tho seven months' school
'bill. School directors were urged to
make a tax levy equal to tho state
appropriation In their respective dis
tricts, and to encourage township high
schools. Closing remarks wero made
by Dr. Crawford, of Allegheny college;
Dr. I. A. Thayer, of this city, and
Deputy Stnto Superintendent Henry
Ilouck.

Tho now breaker of the Dusky Dia
mond Conl company at Beaver Jlrook
was dedicated Thursday. The building
Is C2 feet in height and 120 feet In
length. The nproach to the breaker Is
on a slope 200 feet long and 40 feet
high. It is fitted throughout with tho
most modern machinery, nmong this
being a friction engine, so constructed
that tho breaker machinery can be op
erated and the cars hoisted nt one and
the same time, thereby Insuring an
abundance of coal of all sizes contin
ually. Tho veins that are being worked
and which underly this area are the
Wharton, Buck Mountain and Skid
more. They range in thickness from
8 to 19 feet, and contain a sufficient
quantity of coal to keep tho operators
busy for the next ten years to come.

Another cave-In occurred In the old
workings of tho Dodson mine nt Plym
outh Thursday afternoon, nffcctlng tho
surface on Halleck's Hill, near the resi
dence of Squire Honeywell. Tho sur
face sank so suddenly that a large
sized porker which happened to be
leisurely strolling nlong went down
with It and had n narrow escape from
being burled alive. The hole Is about
twenty feet deep and about eight feet
In diameter.
An order for steel rails for an Indian
railway has been received by the Mary.
land Steel company, which Is owned
by the Pennsylvania Steel company.
Tho works of the company nro at Bal
timore, and there, It Is understood, the
order will bo filled. The contract Is
for 7,500 tons. While this is by no means
a large order, yet It Is significant as
marking the Introduction of American
rails Into India.

During tho waits Rowdy Joe (2.08),
one of the fastest but most unreliable
performers that ever appeared on the
track, paced against Raven's 2.15 track,
match, pacing record. He wus driven
by H. F. Kldwell and wns paced by
a running mate, Little Frltnd. He
made two attempts, acted badly In
each and failed.
It was the fifth score on tho first
trial before Kldwell nodded for the
word when the horse was on a gait
far below his usual pace. The first
quarter was In 40, the next In 33, the
half In 1.17, the third quarter- 36V: and
1.53, the last qunrter in 33 and the
mile in the slow time of 2.27',2.
Later In the second trial he got off
well after two bad failures and reached
the quarter post In C3'-.. but broke on
the upper turn. Kldwell nodded for a
start when he reached the wire, but
Rowdy broke again on the first turn
and abandoned the attempt.
NEW TRACK BICYCLE RECORD.
Bicycle record breaking was more
successfully attempted. Keller nnd
Gregory, of the Green, Ridge Wheel
men, rode a Spalding tandem unpaced
and broke the truck half-mile record
of 1.00 ilnt. The latter was made at
tho Green Ridge meet last August by
John II. Corser, of Allentown, on a
specially prepared track paced by the
Barnes tandem.
The Scranton pair yesterday warmed
for a mile and then nodded. Three
watches In tho Judges' stand timed
