Bicycle Itesoliition,
The bicycle resolution Introduced at
a. former meeting of the common coun
cil by Councilman Brandow, was pass
ed by the lowf r house on Monday even
ing. It provides that wheelmen must
restrict their sped to twelve miles an
hour. All wheels must.be equipped
with lamps at night.

Deputy Sheriff Ferbor was In the city
on Monday and levied on the personal
property of William Kinback in the
factory on South Main street. The ex
ecution was at the Instance of W. B.
Lindsay on a claim for $1,500. The
goods are held by T. C. Boblnson.

Otto F. Wagonhurst, the famous left
tackle of the University of Pennsyl

The meeting of the school bourd was
held on Monday evening In the Dick
son school building. All the members
were present at roll coll except Mike
Matyjewlcz, who came In shortly after.
The most Interesting part of tho meet
ing was the large number of citizens
that gathered there to hear what action
the school board would take in seating
the contestants who were upheld by
the court In the late contest. John
Eley and Francis Simons, who were
returned as being the duly elected
school directors, were present and pre
sented their certificates from the court.
1'pon motion they were accepted, tho
only negative vote being cast by James
W. Cayglll, tho school director, who
was ruled out of olllce by the court In
the contest. The new school directors,
Messrs. Kley and SImms then took
their seats as members of the board.
After the board got down to business
with the new members Cayglll persist
ed In voting on nil motions brought be
fore tho board. Ms votes were ruled
out by the president. Tho ruling of the
president was sustained by every mem
ber present. Cnyglll's partner on the
ticket at election, Fred Hies, decided
to abide by the decision of tho Laeka
wanna county court nnd did not make
any protest whatever against tho seat
ing of his opponent, John Eley. Tho
usual bills for teachers' and Janitors'
salaries were ordered paid. A commit
tee was appointed consisting of Messrs.
Davis, Eley, Morgan to request the
tax collector to have his report in by
the regular meeting In June, 1S07, as
the new board will organize at that
time. The citizens that attended the
meeting wore astonished to see mem
bers of tho school board trimming up
lamps with which to transact business
when the school board pays for electric
lights which were shut off at the April
and May meeting. No one seems to
know why.
OLYPHANT.
Tho town council met In regular ses
Elun last night with all members pres
ent, except Mr. Canaan. The street
commissioner's time for the month of
March' and April were approved as
read. The following bills were ordered
paid: Mrs. Wheeler, janitress, $10.50;
E. F. Blewllt, $44.73; Mrs. O'Brien, in
terest, on bond, $30; state auditor gen
eral, taxns, $41.0. Bills laid over were:
Mooslc Mountain Coal company, $.113.30;
Hunt & Council, $3.78; Sernnton Illu
minating Heat and Power company,
$24.50; Kobert Tinsley, $0; Burgess
McNllIty, $10. Mr. Tinsley leported
that the street committee had cleaned
tho ditch running through town, nnd
the committee was instructed to notify
property owners to keep the stream
clpar In the future. A statement from
ex-Tax Collector Kennedy was read
nnd approved of. A motion was pass
ed that all persons holding keys to the
electric plant turn them over to the
secretary. The committee appointed
to see the ox-burgees, Howard, leport
ed that they had failed to see him. The
secretary was Instructed to write to the
ex-burgess and have him report at the
next meeting. The salaries of the bor
ough olllcers were fixed as follows:
Secretary, $100 per year; street commis
sioner, $1.73 per day; tpams, $4.00; la
borers, tl.bO. Eight hours constitute a
day's work. A resolution was attopt
ed that a levy of one mill be made for
the purpose of sewering and draining
Lackawanna street, according to plans
made by Civil Engineer Dunning. The
matter of appointing a new high con
stable was referred to tho police com
mittee. Adjourned.

started on the practical work of the so
ciety. The parish wns formed into dis
tricts and committee appointed. A com
mittee of ten with the olllcers of the as
sociation constitute a general commit
tee that will pass on all applications
for relief and grant It in all cases they
deem worthy.
An examination for pupils In the
schools outside of Scranton who have
completed common branches will be
held at Moscow on Saturday, May IB,
by Superintendent J. C. Taylor. Ex
amination for scholars in other parts
of tho county will ho held at Waverly,
June 5; Archbald, June 12, and at Tay
lor, Juno 19.

A gnme of base ball was played yes
terday afternoon between the Jolly
Nine, of Jermyn, nnd a nine from West
Mnyfleld, which resulted In a victory
for the latter by n score of 20 to 10.
Tho Monitors of Jermyn nnd the
Athletics, of Mnyfleld will play tho
opening game of base ball at Alumni
park this afternoon. Game will be
called at 2,30 sharp. Admission to tho

Arthur Plzer was at Archbald yes
terday. Last evening William Strowosky had
Peter Jowlnskl arrested on the charge
that Peter Jowlnskl had threatened
to him harm and by reason of such
threats he was afraid defendant would
do hltn harm. The case wns held be
fore Justice of the Peace C. E. Helmes.
The defendant settled the case by pay
ing the costs.

There has been some talk among the
bicyclist of the First ward of organ
izing a bicycle club.
Mrs. George Tiffany nnd daughter,
Mrs. Bell, of Peckvllle, spent yesterday
with the former's daughter, Mrs. Thus.
Solomon.
Attorney J. M. Harris has been se
cured as chairman of the evening for
the Beds entertainment on Frldny eve
ning. The assurance of nn address
from him is a sufllclent guarantee that
the entertainment will bo well worth
the price of admission.
The Merchants challenges the clerks
to a game of ball for Saturday morn
ing, May 13, on the school house

William Burns, an old and respected
resident of this town, died on Monday
evening at his homo on Grove street,
after a lingering Illness. He Is survived
by a wife and eight children. He will
be burled this morning. A high mass
of requiem will be celebrated at the
St. Joseph's church. Interment will
be made at tho Mlnooka cemetery.
Mr. James Timlin, who has been
confined to his home on Mnln street,
with pneumonia, Is rapidly recover
ing. Tho stores of this borough will close
on Saturday for tho purpose of giv
ing the clerks the day off to play their
game with the merchants, which will
be held on the school house grounds on
Saturday morning. Tho following

ratrlck Newcomb, an old resident of
Archbald, died at his home in that
place at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
Ho had been HI only a week and his
death' v as not expected. Mr. Newcomb
wns cnioiir tho oldest residents of
Archbald and was known and respect
ed by a. wide circle ot acquaintances.
Ho Is survived by his wife and a
grown-up family of four. These are:
Mrs. Jehu IUochberger, of Olyphant,
and Katie, Julia and John J. Newcomb,
of Archbald. His funeral will take
place on Thursday morning. A high
mass of requiem will be sung In St.
Thomas' church at 10 o'clock. Inter
ment will be In the Catholic cemetery.
