The Bisons had hut little better than
u makeshift team to practice on yes
terday by rcas-on of the Injury leeelved
liy Jlassey In Thursday's game. O'Bri
cii played first and Menney centeilleld.
The latter characterized his appear
ance by three errors In quick succes
sion In the flist Inning which, with
four hits and a few other things, gave
the Ulsons live runs and the game.
Scissors Fields put one over the cen
ter fence in the second Inning with two
out and a runner on third and that
clinched tho game beyond a doubt. The
contest wasn't permitted to end, how
ever, without nn error by Magulre In
the last inu'iis which gave the visit
ors opportunity to bat In tlnve ur.r.mi
ed runs. - x
From the second to the last Inning
Morse gave only two hits. Rut with
this advantage the heavy hitting Min
ers were unable to get more than seven
scattered hits off Gray or to take much
advantage of his frequent bases on
halls. Under these conditions the h'ome
team sustained a deserved defeat.
Tho game wo& not without Its fea
tures. Kagan fairly revelled In glory
In the fourth Inning; on a miraculous
entfh with two out unil a runner on
third. Sullivan lilt a line drive townrd
the fence that looked good for at least
three bases but Peter caught It with
one hand while on tho run. Grem
mlnger made a one hand slop over
third base of Uenrd's 'grounder with'
two oi bases and two out nnd shot tlio
ball over to Fields and retired the side.
FIELDS' IIOMRIt.
Fields' homer was made In the sec
ond with two out and a runner on
third. The ball went over centerfield
fence with a rod of space to spart. It
Is the third time Fields has perform
ed the tilck. His two other similar of
fenses were made last summer.
O'Hiien opened the game with a walk
to Jlist, hut Uonner's sti Ike-out and a
double play retired the side. Tho
Bisons were more fortunate. With
Clymer out on a foul to Royd, Grey
made a third strike nt a wild witched
ball and reached second. Gllboy and
Wise singled to center nnd Menney let
each hit go through him. The ball
that Wise hit bounded fronrMeanev's
hand and rolled beneath one of the poles
which nie permitted to ornament the
bottom of the fence, wise wnlked
home nnd the ball Is still missing.
Menney followed Ills first two errors
by nulling Field's liy. An outfield liy,
Sullivan's triple and Urquhart's Blngle
brought In the last three runs. Ma
gulre made a wild assist which didn't
prove costly and the nightmare endud
in Clymcr's retirement nt first.
The eighth run for the Risons was
made In the third on O'Brien's muff
of Beard's assist, Urquhart's single
and Gray's force hit. In tho llfth Buf
falo banked another on a base on
balls, Gray'e life and n wild pitch. Tho
Risons distinguished themselves In
their last time at hat. With two out
and a runner on the circuit through
Maguire's fumble, threw runs wsru
made on nn outfield liy, two singles
and a double.
SCRANTON'S RUNS.
Gray's wlldness made all of Scran
ton's runs possible. In the third Boyd
got a walk, but was forced by Morse,
who reached second on a passed hall
and scored on O'Brien's single,
O'Brien was forced by Bonner, Daly's
double sent Bonner to third, but Grem
mlngtr's one-hand stop ot Beard's
giounder retired the side.
The two Scranton runs In the sixth
were developed from two bases on
balls, n force hit and Maguire's three
bner with two out.
In the ninth Boyd fanned nnd Morse
and O'Brien singled, Bonner flew out
to Fields. The bases filled on a walk
to Daly nnd a run was forced In by a
base on balls to Beard, and with the

The Greatest and Most Talked of Pitcher Who Ever Faced
Recently Resigned With the New Yorks,
a Batter.
Amos Rusle, who Is In the opinion of tho
players of tho National league, the best
pitcher who ever faced a. batter, Is a na
tlvo of Indianapolis and did his first pitch
ing for various amateur dubs ot that city.
He soon had quite a repuiutlon as nn ex
ceedingly promising young pitcher and
during tho summer of 1SS9 the Leaguo club
of Indianapolis determined to give him a
trial. His work was so good that Indian
apolis signed him after he had pitched his
first game. He remained with Indianapo
lis during tho rest of the season of 18S0,
doing excellent boxwork. When the In
dianapolis club ictlred from the league In
the winter of 18S9-'90 most of her players
wero transferred to tho imcw YorK oiuo.
Rusle was among the number and ho was
that club's mainstay In the box In 1S90 nnd
tip to lKtfl, when hei refused to sign unless
President Freedman remitted a fine Im
posed In 1S95. Itusle Is six feet tall and la
powerful built. He has a veryswlft delivery
nr.d good command of the ball and Is a
terror to the best batsmen In tho country.
It Is expected that Rusle's record this year
with tho New Yorks -will be hotter than
ever and his good pitching will likely con-
triuuio largely to any nign position whtcn

Another ball batted by a visiting player
was lost beneath ono of tho unsightly
poles which skirt the outfield fence. Tho
patrons of tho game will grumble until
the noles aro removed. It's had enough to
get hipped by a visiting team without hav
ing to see a lot of old poles figure In the
matter.
This Is from the Wllkes-IIarro Leader,
the paper owned by Prosldont liogert, of
tho WllkcB-Harro club: "If the present
Indlsposltlcn of those who aro able to sub
scribe to base ball continues, and If tho
attendance figures don't go nny higher It
scarcely looks possible that the Wllkes
Harre team can look forward to finishing
the season. It would be a great humilia
tion to see the franchise and players sold
to anothe- city, but tho present condition
of things is not encouraging."
In ctr.ncctlon with tho raUlnir of How
