the yurd. Early on Monday morning
1'erry was aroused by the noise of a
wullle In the yard. RepulrltiK there,
lie found the turtle hnugliiK to the nose
of a big fox, which had been stealing
from the henneries In the vicinity for a
month. Hre'r Fox was near the fence,
endeavoring to get over, but Ills ef
forts were blocked by the turtle. Ev
entually the fox leached the next yard,
but Funner Terry followed and shot
lilm dead. The turtle all the time re
tained his hold, and refused to let go
until the fox's nose was cut off. Then
It crawled back to Its homo, carrying
the nose with It as a trophy.
TEACHERS IX COUNCIL.
At a. meeting of principals of graded
Fclioolx of Susquehanna county held
in this place on Saturday afternoon
last, at which County .Superintendent
Charles E. Moxley presided, a County
Teacheis' nssoclutlon was organized,

discussed, and a committee was ap

THE OAKLAND TUACEDY.
The funeral of Frank Nelniann, lato
of Oakland township, who on Thursday
morning last suicided, after fatally
wounding Ills sister-in-law, Mrs. John
Stolloch, in Oakland borough, oc
curred from the undertaking rooms of
Colonel Telford, on Saturday afternoon.
Kev. D. I. Sutherland, pastor of the
Presbyterian church, officiating. The
Interment was made In the Grant
Street cemetery. Mrs. Stolloch, Xel
mann's victim, died from her Injuries
at about 1 o'clock on Suturday after
noon. Her age was about fir, years.
She Is survived by the husband and two
adult children. The posl-niortem ex
amination disclosed the fact that the
fatal bullet had ploughed through the
liver and lodged In the abdominal cav
ity. The funeral of Mrs. Stolloch oc
i Hired from the family residence, 100
High street, on Monday afternoon.

Oakland Methodist church, otllciated.

COUNTY PICKUPS.
Pi'OBpeqtlng for coal has commenced
near Hullstead.
The county court opened yesterday.
The Erie division Inspectors were
here on Friday. They undoubtedly
found, the road on a "big bend" at this
place Groat liend Plaindealer. And
some of the people a little "crooked"
perhaps.
Aetfeld, the Buffulo confidence sharp,
now in enforced seclusion in the Mont
rose bastile, has constructed a song,
in which each ptisoner In the jail is
referred to, and which they all Join In
singing with great gusto. In the near
futuie, Aetfeld will be singing another
tune.

A newly-elected Justice of the peace
near Susquehanna a few days since
delivered the following mnlden a'ddress
to a jury; "Gentlemen of the jury!
Charging a jury Is a now business to
me, as this Is my first case. You have
all the evidence in the case as well as
myself. You have also heard whut the
learned counsels have said. If you be
lieve what the learned counsel for the
plaintiff has told you, your verdict will
be for the plaintiff; but If, on the other
hand, you believe what the plalnltff's
counsel have told you, then you will
give a verdict for the defendant. Hut

he hanged if I know what you will
do! Constable, take charge of the
jury."
LITTLE LOCALETTES.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians will
hold a grand parade and Held day In
Susquehanna, June 29. The five Hlng
lianiton divisions will run an excursion
to this place, and ten other divisions,
from (irent Mend. Factoryville,' Carbon
dale, Hancock, Coming and llornells
vllle, will ba In line.
A meeting for railroad men was held
In Hognu Opera house on Sunday after
noon, under the auspices of the Wo
men's Christian Temperance union.
Several Susquehanna pastors made
brief addresses.
Michael Delpapa, the well-known El
nilra padioue, was on Friday afternoon
arrested anil brought before Justice
Tiffany. In this place, charged bv Au
gustus Forte, with conspiring to cheat
and defraud him and others. Delpapa
gave ball In the Sum of $200 for appear
ance before the justice, April ?. The
matter grew out of the padrone system
of famishing the Erie railroad company
with laborers.
THE WOODCIIUCK UP A THEE.
Jack Dodge, of Lanesboro, was set
ting In his doorway last Sunday, when
he saw a big woodchuek stealing uloncr
a knoll ucross the creek, not more than
a bundled rods away. The wcodclmck
stopped at the foot of the tree, Inspect
ed it for a moment, and then climbed It
with the enue of a squirrel, but going
up as a boar climbs a tiee. The animal
did not remain long In the tree, uiul
came down, letting itself down back
ward. It then went up another tree,
where It could be seen nipping off the
sprigs of the pine tree. After eyeing
the unusuul sight lor some time. Dodge
took his lltle and picked the woodchuek
from his poich. It weighed twenty
pounds.
TALLY FOR THE MILKMEN.
In the case of the Milk Dealer's Pro
tective association vs. the Erie and the
Delaware, Lackawanna and Western
railroads, tried before the Interstate
commerce commission, the milkmen
won their suit. As a result, the Erie
will cause to be made four groups of
milk stations. The first group will ex
tend forty miles out from New York.
The second group will embrace sta
tions within the next sixty miles. The
third gioup will combine stations with
in the next ninety miles. The fourth
group will cover stations beyond 190
miles from the terminal. The rates per
can will probably not exceed 2;i cents
for the first group, 2(1 for the third
grout), and 112 cents for the fourth
group. Cream, per can. IS cents great
er than milk. The third group of the
Erie will begin at Pond Eddy, which is
just 100 miles from New York-, and ex
tend to Lanesboro, 101 miles from New
York.
VARIOUS MATTERS.
District Attorney W. D. B. Alney, of
Montrose, an able, eloquent and enter
taining speaker, will deliver the Me
morial Day address In Susquehanna.
Moody post made a wise selection.
A large amount of maple sugnr is be
ing made In the county. Some of the
new sugar arriving in the market was
new last year.
The Susquehanna Water company has
elected the following olllcers: Presi

A FATAL FIGHT.
Two Susquehanna county young men
a few weeks since returned from a
deer-hunting trip through like county,
bringing with them a pair of locked
horns, which they obtained from an
old hunter In that section. The hun
ter. In prowling through the woods,
came upon the carcasses of two line
bucks, their horns firmly Interlocked.
They evidently had been lighting, and
In the struggle had locked horns. Be
ing unable to get separated, and, con
sequently, unable to obtain uny food,
they had starved to death in that posi
tion. One set had nine prongs. The
horns are so firmly locked together that
It is Impossible to separate them with
out sawing off one of the prongs.

Rhea and company appeared In IIo
gan opera house on Monday evening In
"Nell fj wynne," giving a meritorious
performance to good business.
There are dull times on the Jefferson
branch, so far as the coal traffic is
concerned.
11. F. Manger, ot this place, Is a
prominent Republican candidate for
protlionotary of the county.
On account of light coal business, the
Delaware and Hudson laid off about
thirty trainmen lust week.
The caudlducy of our State Senator
Hardenberg, for auditor general of the
state, Is being favorably iceulved by
press and public. It is to bo hoped
that tiie able und genial senator will

of that village.

"Stanley rapidly grew worse. He was
nlways a sickly boy. One day I noticed
that he was jerking his arm up in a very
peculiar manner. A few days later ho
seemed to lose control of his lees. Hist one
and then the other would be pulled up and
then straightened out tiuaiu. He was a per
fect bundle of nerves and was rapidly losing
nil control of himself. When eating at the
table or drinking, his arm would often twitch
eo as to spill what he was drinking. Ono
