TO PURIFY PHILADELPHIA. The calendar of bills on second read- Iiik was taken up. Mr. Woodruff, of Philadelphia, called up the bill to pro hibit the soliciting; qr collecting of po litical contributions from or by olllcers or employes in cities of the first class. Mr. Woodrufi. in favor of tho hill, said that it was for the purity of elec tions in tlio city of Philadelphia. Ho paid that six millions of dollars was the pay ndl from which on per cent, was collected annually from nlllee hold ers in that city, the sum collected amounting to slxty-fivo thousand dol lars for political purposes. Twenty five thousand dollars of this money was paid out to poll men and that the bal ance of SlO.OOu was not accounted for, und no person outside of those In con trol of city polities know where this amount was plxced. The com mission of fifteen business men of the country, appointed by President C. Stu art Patterson, of the monetary con vention which met at Indianapolis in January, assembled In Washington this morning to enter upon the dischnrge of the Hi .st of the duties with which they are charged. Only about half of the members arrived today, but sev eral more are expected before they complete their work. Three Well-Known Citizens of Brad ford County Become Tired of Life. Towandn, March 2n. A curious epi demic of suicides seems to be prevalent just now In Bradford county. .loshuu 1J. Carpenter, of AtliPiis. committed suicide on Saturday morning hist by hanging himself In his house on the banks of the Chemung river. He had spent the night alone In the house, the only other occupant his son being away, and the body was found by II. H. OHIon', a neighbor, at about, .30 In the morning. The body wns not yet rigid, showing that the deed was done that morning. The body was found hang ing In the stairway, lie had tied a towel around a side rafter, doubled his suspenders and tied them around his neck, and then to the towel. After do ing this he had stopped off a step and strangled to death. On Monday Patrick MeMahon, 'aged f,0 years, died at the Ochs House un der peculiar circumstances. Early in the afternoon he was sick at the bot tling works in the First ward, and later at the hotel complained of his illness and went to his room. Early In the evening he was found to be in u dan gerous condition and a physician was summoned. Hy this time he could not talk, but there was ample evidence that he had taken poison. When asked If he had taken the poison accidentally he moved his head, but It was Impossi ble to know what he meant. lie lin gered In great agony till half-past eleven o'clock, when death put an end to ills suffering. On the same day Harvey Campbell, a middle-aged farmer living In Granville, committed suicide by hanging himself in his barn. Mr. Campbell had been deranged for years and was conllned in the Insane deuartnient of Hie county house for several months, and wus lat er taken to the asylum at Danville. Here ho remained until last fall, when, upon tin urg'-Mit entreaty of his wile he was released. Although muck Im proved, Mr. Campbell had by no means recovered, and of late li'is been very despondent nnd doin-hiiirtil. Mon day morning he was missed from the house and his wife, In searching for li l iii, found him hanging In the barn.
