I'eter Giler knew that Hufus Hlnton

It was noticed after the coming of

Dick Biudfoid was about Hufus Hln

ot the "Black Hollow" and other gieat

Dick Hiadfoid was a college giad

I'eter (Jiler would have been less of
a man had he legaided with Indiffer

"it's all up with Rule Hlnton." "He
was too slow." 'Ought to've won when
he had tilings his own wa." "Theie's
no depeiidln' on women." "Well, what's
to be, tiiit-t be." These things the
ipjlet, obseisanl people said one to the
other.
Then they noticed a change in Hufus

the old way as to diess. Always quiet,
he became ciuletei. At night the lights
In his loom told he was at his books
again, uudlstuibed by the music in tlie

Dull In the summer, Hlnck Hollow
was doubly dull and looked doubly des

the childten, coasting thtough dink

The monotony of previous winters
had always been luoken into by a ball
at the Luzeine House In tlie Chtlsttnus
holidays. This winter was not to be
an exception: Indeed, Petei Giler, with
the Biippoit and approval of his daugh

There Is no day in the cavernous

and when they came up at six In the

"Volt nre very kind," he tfuld, with
a weaiy smile thnt did not escape her.
"1 shall be down nfter the dance Is well
under way. It will be moie pleasuie
to watch you than to piovoke luttshter

IJlek Htadfoid had the 111 St dance
with Kate, and hnd it not been for her
tact and bettei In ceding he would
huve balled othel young men fiom the
coveted pilvlleije. Knte danced with
her old fi lends, and she made many

It was near midnight, the hour set
for the supper, when Hufus Hlnton
