COMEDIAN WILSON REBELS.
Says He Will Not Submit to the
Theatrical Trust.
New York, March 12. Francis Wil
son, the comedian, has declared war on
the theatrical trust controlled by
Messrs. Hayinan, Prohinau, Klch, Har
ris, Nixon, Zimmerman, Klaw and Kr
lunger. Mr. Wilson's time was partial
ly booked by the syndicate, when his
manager discovered that would be the
only way to avoid a clash of dates
with De Wolf Hopper, who recently
placed himself under the booking con
trol of the combine.
It has been the practice of the mali
ngers of the two companies to arrange
their season so as not to conlllct. This
year Mr. Wilson's manager found that
the syndicate was doing the booking for
the big star of "El Capltun," and that
dates would full together. So, to avoid
friction, Wilson allowed the trust to
book him.
When it came to playing Baltimore
and Washington it is said the comedian
was told that he must appear at the
Academy of Music and the Lafayette
Square theater respectively. All his
previous engagements have been at
Ford's In Baltimore and the National
In Washington. Mr. Wilson rebelled
and his time at the Philadelphia house
controlled by the syndicate was can
ci led.
Wilson then refused to play the syn
dicate dates in other cities, and a the
atrical war Is on in consequence.

The Increase in Business Is Gradual, but
Exhibits Elements of Soundness
That Are Unmistakable.
New Yoik, Match 12 It. ". Dun &
Co. will say toinoirow In their weekly
Itevlew of Trade:
It Is a cut lous llliistiatlon of human
natuie, this continued discouragement
even while the lncieusi- of pioduutlve
industries and of legitimate business
steadily grows. No genuine or lasting
Improvement could come otherwise
than slowly and step by step, after
such a depression us the pust four
yeurs have witnessed, und t lie most
hopeful feature of the situation is that
tile gain Is so nearly devoid of ele
ments which Involve unsoundness and
probable reaction. The money mar
kets continue especially favorable to
Industrial recovery, and there Is no
such speculation epidemic as to lock
Ul an excessive shale, of available
capital. The annual statement of
wheat In farmers' hands March 1 have
not in the least stimulated speculation.
Tile price lias declined l!'j cents for the
week, and corn is ulso a fraction lower.
Iron furnaces March 1 were produc
ing 170.000 tons weekly, 7.000 tons or 4
per cent more than Feb. 1. and al
though visible stocks have Increased
20,000 tons in four weeks, still more
furnaces have started this month. The
demand for finished products still lags
behind the supply of pig iron, except
In the great steel woiks, whose stocks
are not reported, but their orders with
out doubt cover full production for
several months. The chler events in
the railroad world have been encour
aging. The transfer of the Lehigh
Valley to the control of the Moraan
ami Drexel houses promises Important
relief, and tends toward greater har
mony of coal interests for tile future.
At the same time the reduction which
will be announced today of 2.1 cents In
prices of anthracite, looks towaid a
larger demand and better employment
In the future.
March earnings for railroads thus
far reported shows an Increase of 2
per cent, over last year.
Failures for the past week have been
2.-G in the United States, against 200
last year, and 31 In Canada against CO
last year.

MARKETS AND STOCKS.
Wnll Street Itevlew;
New York, March 12. Speculation at
the Stock exchange early In the day
wns devoid of feature and extieme dull
ness prevailed, but during the after
noon the maiket developed an unusual
degree of strength and in a number of
instances, sharp advances were record
ed. Had it not been for the Vanderbllt
group the session would have been
without Important Incident, but the
fact that a steady absorption of New
York Cential, Canada Southern and
Omaha took place inspired the ttad
ers witli bullish proclivities with more
confidence than on any previous day of
the week. The rise In the VanderbllUi
was accompanied by teports that sev
eral prominent capitalists had taken
hold of those stocks, for a considerable
advance. The most Important gains
were :; per cent, in Omaha, 2 In West
ern I'nion, l',i In Jersey Central and
1 In New York Central. The remain
der of the list improved to the extent
of ViiiTa per cent. Tobacco advanced
Hi on the decision rendered at Trenton
in favor of the company, .but a reaction
to 7S',! ensued. The only stocks that
showed net losses for the day were
.Sugar' und Manhattan, and these only
lost i per cent. Total sales were lit',
000 shaies.

J
ttJI I II llrJi
You will judge, perhaps, on first thought, but when you know the price
you'll not be surprised. Twelve years atjo thes2 Spanish Scarfs were in great
demand and were worn extensively as a neck and shoulder ornament. And
they are good today, as many of our friends who have already bought them tell
us for head-gear, if you are going out in the evening, or you can take one of the
wide, extra long ones, and make a waist or bodice over a covered ground.
This lot we have are strictly all silk, and many of them are big enough
for a shawl. The actual value is from $1.50 to $4.50 each.
