Notes from
Mr. Joseph Bonnctt, writing In the
Dally Tclcftraph on n recent date, Bdys:
"With roforenco to proposed reforms in
tho musical section of tho eisteddfod, I
luivo received a lottcr from Mr. W. Orlf
Jltli, of WorklnKton, a typlcnl Welsh mu
sician and conductor, who , before ho
migrated to Knglnnd did Important mu
sical work in tho Principality. For yearn
past Mr. Grimth has been tho life and
soul of tho Cumberland musical festival
and eisteddfod, lie, therefore, speaks
With connalsnnco do cause, und theso
uro somo of bin words: 'Moro especially
of late years, I havo observed with dis
satisfaction how tho Welsh choirs havo
become big, and mado up of picked
singers, to engage ono district against
another, chiefly with tho object of win
ning a largo sum of money. This I havo
always condemned, by precept nnd ex
nmple, as a policy that Is degrading,
prostituting tho art for n purposo that
must sooner or later prove a curse, and
bring about ovll results to tho cause of
music In Wales.' " Mr. Bennett thinks
this stato of things should bo amended
without delay. "There Is just now," ho
says, "a remarkable ngreement on tho
question among Welshmen of culture,
nnd I iim not without hopes that very
Valuable reforms will gradually bo
made."
"Westminster" and our special .London
rpprcsentutlvo nro not alone In praising
Mr. William Jones for his speech in
tho Iioiisq on tho l'cnrhyn quarry ques
tion. This is what tho Weekly Sun says:
"Mr. Jones is a born orator. He has a
Bweot voice, a poetic and Imaginative
diction, and a winning manner. Tho face
Is very attractive. Tho eyes aro dark,
wldo open, transparent; the hnlr, long
and dark, as Crushed off tho forehead,
nnd helps to nil to the poetic look, and
altogether tho Impression Is of a poet
with strong fervor, Idealism, and per
haps also the Illusions of a man of Cel
tic nature. From such a speaker ono
might expect either a very fine or n very
rldlculous.oither a very touching or a
very exasperating speech, for tho house
of commons Is not a reverent assembly,
nnd Is especially Intolerant of Honllmon
tnllty or exaggeration, Mr. Jones made
n, speech which was everything that
could bo desired. It struck a noto of fer
vor nnd of spirituality, which was very
risky in the house of commons, but tho
very fine voice, that transparent face,
with tho honest eyes and the rich nnd
musical tone, nnd, above all things, tho
noble language and excellent temper, dls
Urmed all criticism, and from friend and
too there came a chorus of cheers when
ho sat down."
At the Queen's hall, London, on Mon
day evening a party of Welsh musicians,
including Mrs. Mary Davles, Mr. Ellis
Griffith, Mr. John Thomas ("Pencerdd
Gwalla"), and Mr. Philip Lewis (tho
young violinist), gave a concert In aid
of those out of work at Lord Penrhyn's
quarries. Tho best seats were priced at
n guinea, and tho Marquess of Klpon,
the Marchioness of Londonderry, Lady
Dllkc, and many others had worked well
for the cause. One lady, wo understand,
sold 40 worth of tickets, and nnothcr 23
worth. Tho Bothesdn choir sang Rlllo's
"Martyrs of the Arena," and an effec
tive chorus from Mr. David Jenkins' can
tata, "Owen Glondower," In splendid
style, and were enthusiastically encored.
Mr. John Thomas, "the tenor of tho
hills," also made a deep Impression In
his solos. Mr. Labouchere was on Wed
nesday night tho guest of tho junior
members of tho National Liberal club,
nnd Sir F. Lockwood, who was ono of
tho speakers, said If an object lesson
could have been presented to the houso
of commons by the Bethesda quarrymen
Lord Penrhyn's position would have
been moro uwkward than it was at pres
ent: During tho evening tho quarrymen
sang, and tho chairman handed them 3C
13s, collected in the dining room.
Mr. William Jones, M. P., who scored
bo signally in the Penrhyn debate. Is, by
reason of his past history, ono of the
most notublo of tho younger generation
in tho houso of commons. Young a3 ho
looks and ho is really older, for he is 35
his career (says tho Morning Lender) has
been one of unending toll. Ho began life
ns a pupil teacher, and in tho natural
course of things, becamo a schoolmaster
in a Welsh country parish. But this did
not content him. Ho secured what many
country schoolmasters are wont to regard
ns the height of ambition an appoint
ment under tho London board. That,
however, did not bring his develppment
to a close. By Intense application he has
mado himself not merely a lluent conver
sationalist In four languages English,
Welsh, French and German but an ac
complished musician, and an acknowl
edged nuthorlty on all questions of an
cient philosophy and ancient history. Ho
Is no longer a board school nssistant
teacher, he Is n coach at Oxford for
"Honor Greats," though he has never
taken a degrpo himself. Hut with all his
strenuousness and learning ho Is a man
of very winning personality.
An article on "Tho Chance of Roman
Jteliglon in Wales," written by Mr. Ed
ward Foulkes, of Llanberls. In tho cur
rent number of tho national Welsh quar
terly, tho Genlnen, is likely to draw ap
proval or censure as Its object Is rightly
Interpreted or otherwise, but In any caso
it cannot fall to bo read with Interest.
The writer remarks on tho nntl-Cathollo
movement which haB lately been started
with such notlvlty among Welsh Noncon
formists, and ho believes tho alarmist
feeling from which it springs to be
groundless as far as any apparent activ
ity on tho part of Roman Catholics to
attack Welsh Protestantism Is concerned.
He arrives at tho conclusion that tho
.true cause of tho uneasiness lies In ho
consciousness among religious leaders of
a great want of devotional roverenco nnd
beauty In tho Welsh religious service.
With a truo critical Insight, tho writer
touches on tho harmful effects of sec
tarian dissensions, producing, ns they do,
such an amount of jealousy and of vul
gar arrogance. Tho article Is, In fact,
nn eloquent plea for moro of ohasto re
finement and devotion In tho public wor
ship of Wales.
It Is delightful to find that tho fierce
hearted Welshman, the Rev. Gwynoro
Davles, and tho very samo Professor Ma
haffy who has bfen writing about bar
barous Wales aro follow travolers on tho
steam yacht Midnight Sun, which Is on
Its way at present to tho East. In a let
ter which ho has sont to a friend In
Wales, Mr. Davles says hat one after
noon, on tho voyago from Naples to
Athens, ho had a chat with Professor
Mahaffy with regard to tho allegations
ngainst Welshmen in tho Nineteenth
Century. Mr. Davles says that tho Irish
professor has evidently been misled by
tho "eminent Welshmen" whom ho con
suited and hn3 swallowed In perfect con
fidence all that he was told. Ono of tho
charming fairy tales related to tho guile
less professor was that a secret, but
binding, ngreement exists umong Welsh
men to prevent anyone except Welshmen
from obtaining any ofllco or appointment
In tho principality. Mr, Davles Intends
to publish tho substance of the conversa
tion. The Press association Btntes that, un
der the guidance of Mr. William Jones,
M. P., the Penrhhn Quarry choir wore
on Mondny morning conducted over tho
houses of parliament. Shortly nftor
wards 'Xvn Eyton took them over
to Wesi. r( Abbey, where, standing
upon Dr. Li....gstono's tomb they sang
a couple of Welsh hymns. They were
nfturwnrds entertained by Mr. Jones,
Canon Eyton, nnd Mr. Hudson, of tho
Libera! Central offices, to luncheon at
tho Westminster Pulneo hotel. On Sun
day tho Welsh choristers are by Invita
tion to Blng In St, Margaret's church,
YestmInster, when Canon Eyton In
tends to dollvor an address on tho social
aspects of tho Htrlkc.
A vast amount of preparation Is quietly'
going on at Nowport to make tho na
tional eisteddfod this year a success.
Wo had amplo ovldcncc on tho day of
tho proclamation last year that no ex
pense will bo spared in gaining this end.
Naturally, tho promoters have to tinder
tako ilnanclal responsibilities, and nn ap
peal has been Issued, to which It Is to bo
hoped n ready and substantial response
will lie mado by thoso who desire to sco
the Newport "National" faring, nt nny
rate, no Worse than tho events of tho
past. Probability points to a record eis
teddfod In every way, and tho executive
cannot recolvo too much encouragement
In tho form of .subscriptions. cynon
furdd, of Kingston, will bo ono of tho
conductors. It will bo remembered that
Mabon has already ngreed, so that In the
matter of conductors, nt any rate, the
executive Iihs been fortunate. Wo don't
know about that, Mr. Weekly Mall.
The rapidly growing, yet carefully se
lected exhibits nt Cardiff museum have
just been added to by tho acquisition of
two unusually interesting articles, une
Is a small lint elder ensk, shaped ltko a
kettle drum, a type which was common
ly mot with on the borders of Monmouth
shire and Herefordshire. Mr. C. J. Jack
sou says this kind of cask was called a
"costrcl," which Councillor Edward
Thomas promptly explained to tho mem
bers of tho commlttco was good Welsh
lor liquid-holding vessel. The other ad
dition Is a remarkable silver medal struck
to commemorato tho defeat of the
Frenchmen when they landed nt Fish
guard. Mr. Ward, the curator, Is anxi
ous to gain particulars as to any medals
struck to celebrate this Invasion In 1707.
Two nreachcrs were announced for a
couplo of nnnlvorsnry services held by
different denominations, on tho same
Sundny, In a little town In West Gla
morgan, nnd in order not to weaken each
other the two lots combined to have ono
service and two sermons. A certain dea
con Is a great "respondcr," and when the
two preachers ascended tho pulpit tho
deacon quietly asked, "Which Is our
preacher?" A wag pointed to the wrong
man, who preached last, and got all the
responses from tho deacon, while tho
nreacher of his own denomination was
listened to In severe and critical silence.
Tho deacon knows tho Joko now, and Is
sore unto bitterness.
What n difference it would make to tho
narratives In the. Bible If trains nnd
steamers had been Invented Immediately
after tho flood. On Saturday "Morion" re
rcelved nn Arabic newspaper from tho
Rov. John Evans ("Eglwysbaeh") Ponty
pridd. It was posted at Cairo on Jan. 22,
so that It only took eight days to como
from Egypt to Treforest. Four dnys be
foro "Eglwysbaeh" was at Jerusalem, so
that "Eglwysbaeh" covered in four days
a distance which took tho Israelites of
old forty years to accomplish. Inside tho
newspaper wag written In Welsh, "Egl
wysbaeh yn yr Alpht." This Is a hint
for the postoillco olllclnls.
Who would havo thought of looking
Into tho Welsh trlnds for directions on
literary style. Vet Southoy, In giving a
lesson In the knack of authorship to his
brother, Dr. Southey, says: "A Welsh
triad might comprehend all tho rules
of style. Say what you have to say as
perspicuously as possible, as briefly ns
possible, ns rememberably as possibly,
and tnko no other thought nbout It."
Southey, the nutbor of "Madoc," at all
times turned lovingly to Wales, and was
anxious to sottlo down for life In tho
Vale of Neath.
It would bo Interesting to know how
many unmarried lndle3 in England hold
tho high civic post of mayoress. The
Lady Mayoress of Manchester Is Miss
Roberts, the well-known Welsh lady mis
sionary. The lady Is a woman whoso ca
reer has been of greater interest than
that which usually falls to tho lot of
her sex. Sho has a deep Interest In mis
sion work, and was for some time honor
ary missionary In China. She makes no
secret that though happy In her present
position she prefers tho life of a mission
ary. Mr. T. E. Ellis, M. P., the chief Liber
al whip, spent Sunday recently with Mr.
Cecil Rhodes. Mr. E111V acquaintance
with whom dates from the date he went
to tho Cape In search of health. He has
been Mr. Rhodes' guest at tho great
country house which was recently burnt
down, and his recollections of Mr.
Rhodes personal charms nnd kindness
have never been effaced.
Archdeacon Protheroc, whoso name Is
prominently mentioned In connection with
tho vacant seo of St. Davids, Is a son-in-law
of Archdeacon Howell (Llawdden),
who was formerly vicar of St. John's,
Cardiff. When a suffragan bishop was
appointed for St. David's wo under
stand Archdeacon Protheroo's name stood
second on tho list when tho appointment
was made.
Ono of the most affecting features of
Madamo Edith Wyneo's funeral was tho
singing of the Bethesdn Quarrymen's
choir. The choristers sang with beauti
ful effect tho old Welsh hymns, "Uvdd
Myrdd o Ryfeddodau" and "O! Dduw rho
lm' dy hedd," and so tho great cantntrlce
was laid to rest amid the-.-stralns of tho
music of tho land she so ardently loved.
The beautiful missionary hymn, "From
Greenland's Icy Mountains." by Bishop
Hober, was written at Wrexham vicarage
In 1S19. It was especially written for
Whit Sunday, upon which occasion tho
viear, Dr. Shipley, dean of St. Asaph,
was to preach a sermon in nid of tho
propagation of tho gospel In foreign
parts, at Wrexham parish church.
Mr. F. II. Cowen Is composing a vocal
scena to be sung by Mr. Ben Davles at
ono of tho London Philharmonic concerts
next season.
Sir William Hareourt is now drawn by
tho cartoonists ns wearing a Welshman's
hat a playful roferenco to his AVolsh
seat.

Adversity Is Overcome in iUnuly
Fashion by n Swiss Toiler.
From the Sioux City Dispatch.
Gottfried Struch'cn and Ellsa Wlnklo
mann, formerly of Heme, Switzerland,
and now of Clay county, this state, are
Ideal lovers. Neither separation nor
adversity had the power to subdue their
affection for each other and nfter an
engagement of ten years they are about
to be married nt Struehen's homo In
Rlverton township, a shoit distance
from Spencer, la,
It waB in Deoember, 1887, that Struch
on and his sweetheart met and became
engaged. Struchen had neither money
nor prospects, however, and their wed
ding seemed likely to be deferred In
definitely. After two years of waiting
Struchen decided that If ho stayed In
Switzerland he wa likely to remain
single tho rest of his life. Ho had not
even the funds to pay his passage to
America, so he shipped before the mast,
arrived In New York In January, ISS9,
worked his way west to Iowa nnd Anal
ly secured employment as a farm hand
In Clay county.
He was unable to save money fast
enough, however, so ho went to Omaha
and for two years followed the trade of
a wagonmaker. At tho end of that time
he returned to Iowa, bought a farnvand
a few weeks ngo was able to send to
Switzerland for M(bs Winklemann. In
stead of working her passage as Struch
en had done the youns woman came
over In the llrst cabin and traveled In
a Pullman from New York to her west
ern home.
Struehon Is now one of the wealthiest
farmers In Northwestern Iowa, und hla
marriage to Miss Winklemann will bo
celebrated within th'e next few days.
