The following appealed In last Sun
daj's Fiee Press: "The following Item
is well wot thy the consideration of ev-
et y taxpajer: Justice of the Peare
Andiow Doles wants only $100 per veai
for the ofllce of burgess, or $300 for the
tetm of three eurs, while the Repub
lican nominee, James E. Watklns,
wants $400 pel jear, or all that Is In
It. Bj electing Doles It will be a sav
ing of $900 Let every vote! consider
the question."
The following also appeared In jes
tei day's Republican: "U request It Is
stated that the borough of Taj lor Is
paving mote money to Its burgess than
any borough In Pennsj lvanlu. One
hundied dollais Is the highest amount
paid in other boioughs, while some pay
onlv $r)0. This boiough pas $100.
Some people are having a snug beith
at the expense of the borough. This
borough Is In debt and always will be
If it is going to squander monev like
this"
Theie can be no doubt as to who
wtote these items. It was W. G. How -ells,
the Republican coitespondent.
Eveiy votei In Tav loi knows that
How ells was falily and honestly de
feated for the nomination foi buigess
on the Republican ticket bj an over
whelming majoilty, and Instead of tak
ing his defeat giacefull and manfullv,
he whines. If How ells had lecelved
the nomination, would he say one woid
about the burgess' salaij?
The present contest Is for the ofllce
of butgess and not foi the salaiy, for
It tests with the borough council to fix
and deteimlne what salaij. If any, the
butgess shall receive. Andiew Doles,
a Democratic justice of the peace In an
ov ei whelming Republican boiough,
would take the ofllce ut a saint y of
$100 Of course he would. But would
he not albo turn everj case that came
before him provided he was elected
burgebs, that was purely and simply
a boiough case, Into a ense of assault
and batteiy or some such cilmlnal of
fense and pocket the fee, so that the
boiough would get nothing-' Could he
not In this way very soon Inctease his
fees to more than $100? A'otets of the
boiough of Tayloi, be not deceived by
such sophistry and deception!
