started to woik as a slate picker In the
first bleaker that ever cracked coal In
Luzeine county, in what was known
ns the Butler bleaker. In this breaker
he worked three years, after which he
enteied the mines, btaiting us a door
boy. He steadily advanced in his min
ing career until the year 1SC0, when ho
was made dilvlng boss. At the ilist
bound of the dium and life he left his
home, woik and filends, and enteied
the ben Ice of Undo Sam, enlisting as
a private in Company I, Fifty-second
regiment, Pennsylvania volunteeis.
After serving all tlnough the lebellion
Mr. Williams returned to his native
toyn nnd again resumed his position us
driver boss. In 1S77, duilng the gieat
gieenback movement, ho was appoint
ed deputy sheilft. After beiving a
short time he resigned, and when tho
law 'was passed which compelled mine
foiemen to have certificates, was ono
of the first to receive them. Since that
time he has had charge of two collieilea
In Plttston, one ut Lallin, and served
two years as mine foreman under tho
Southern Pacific llallioad company In
Mexico. In tho year 1893, when J, M,
Jllce took charge of tho Rush liiook,
now known as Blue Ridge colliery, Mr.
Williams was made Inside foieman ami
berved three years, after which he was
made g-eneral superintendent of all the
