TAYLOK.
Washington, Jan. 8 The second
day s discussion of the Pacific Rall
joaf f unillng bill by the houso today
developed much moie Intel est, from a
popular point of lev. Mr. Johnson.
ot California. In tho couise of a
speech suppoiting the bill alluded to
Mi. W. It. Hearst, of tho San Fianclsco
Examiner and Now Yoik Journal In
most imperative terms. Ho wus an
swcied by Mi. Coopei, of Wisconsin,
o chnt acterlzed the incident ns the
most disgraceful he had ever Known
in the history of const ess.
The bill was advocated by Messrs.
Patteison, Tennessee, and Hepburn,
Iowa, and antagonized by Messis. Hai
rison, Alabama; Boatner, Louisiana;
Swanson, Viiglnia; McCall, Massachu-.
setts; (only ui on the late of inteiest
pioposed), by Messrs. Wheeler, Ala
bama, and Shaft oth and Bell, Colorado.
Tomoriow the bill -will be under con
sideration for amendment and seveial
substitutes for It will be pioposed. A
resolution was agreed to offeied by
Mr. Turner, directing the attorney
general to print as an appendix to his
last report, the cotiespondence in tho
depaitment of justice, upon the great
lallroad stiilce In Chicago in 1S01.
An echo of the great iailway strike
in Chicago four years ago -w hich cul
minated in the imprisonment of Eu
gene V. Debs, was lieaid in the house
committee on the judiciary today. The
bill in relation to contempts of court
which passed the senate last session
lias been under consldeiatlon by the
house committee for the past fortnight
and today the senate bill as amended
was oidered to a favoiable repoit. In
its present form the house bill pro
vides that any contempt in the pres
ence of the court may be punished by
the coutt alone, but any contempt out
side of tho court, ecept the lefusal
of witnesses or Jurois to attend, must
be tued by a jury if the accused to

FOREST CITY.
New York, Jan. S. R. G. Dun & Co.
will say tomoriow In their weekly Re
view of Trade;
The year 1897 begins with one clear
advantage; the past year swept out of
the way a gteat number of unsound
concerns which In nny time of activity
would have been dangerous to business.
Of the 15.2S0 conuneiclal and banking
failures In 1890, a laigu shaie leptes
euted cilppltng losses In previous y eais,
01 the violence of speculative stouns In
1893 or tho first half of 1890, while
thousands more lesulted fiom the futy
ot the political toinado last fall.
While the banking fallutes have not
ceased at tho west apprehension about
them has almost w holly subsided and
no serious Influence upon general tiade
is now expected. It is felt at he west
that all business will be the sounder
after Its putglng and the return of
money to New York has exceeded ship
ment to the Interior by $2,000,000 for the
week. Speculative maikets have been
dull. After ilslng about M cents per
share and $2 for trusts, stocks were
cheeked by levival of talk about Cu
ba at Washington nnd by 1 eduction of
the dividend on Delaware and Hudson.
The maiket for goods Is extietnely
Blow, as many Infer that the unpre
cedented stocks of print cloths Indicate
a similar But plus of other goods. The
logic Is bad, but in many branches the
mills have doubtles manufactured
goods anticipating a demand which
bus not come. It is now proposed to re
lieve the market by selling quantities
of pi Int cloths abioad, or by locking up
2,000,000 pieces until the maiket Im
proves. The only change In quotations
Is one cent reduction In some bleached
goods.
In woolen goods, the only change Is
a j eduction of IVj cent In clay worst
eds, and mlxtutes, and ciders are not
more frequent. Orders for boots and
shoes havo almost ceased, except for a
few qualities which have been ad
vanced only 'iVi to C cents In pi Ice, but
Jnbbeis are buying u little more as
stocks run low.
Enormous purchases of billets came
with a :ush, most of the larger con
cerns contracting for all they lequjrcd
On Tuesday afternoon Di. J S. Nlles,
of Cnibondale, assltedby Di. Ulakeslee,
of Foi est City, peifotmed a successful
opetation on Mis. Butler, wife of Mr.
Hanv Butler. When Mis. Butler was
a child living with her patents In the
west she met with the mlsfoitune of
fieezlng hei foot. Since that time she
has been a constant sufferer. Opera
tions weie peifoimed on the Injuied
member foui different times, each time
a pottlon of the foot being cut off. A
few seats ago an operation was per
formed and for a time It was thought
that the tiouble had been oveieome.
Shortly after the foot had healed and
when Mrs. Butler was ugaln able to
walk It was dlscoveied that the usual
Intense pain had still to be enduied.
Up until the piesent time it wns very
iminful for her to walk and a consul
tation with the above named gentlemen
xesulted In the peifounlng of another
operation. The lee was cut off Just
below the knee. At piesent she Is do
ing as well ns could be expected and
her f 1 lends slnceiely hope that she will
leeover from her allltctlon.
The Mendelssohn Glee society gave
a veiy successful conceit In Vandllng
on Tuesday evening.
VS. W. Illakeslee Is unable to leturn
to Philadelphia on account of sickness.
The voles for the electilo light wires
are being placed in position through
out tho borough.
An eisteddfod wns held In Utlcn, N.
Y on New Year's day under the au
spices of tho Cymtelgyddlon society of
that place. The Sons of Cambila en
teted on two of the competitive selec
tions and were successful In winning
