Hands M ho Were on a Freight.
Minneapolis, Minn., Nov. 3. One of
the most daring train hold-ups that has
occurred in a long time Is reporwd to
have been perpetrated about 6 o'clock
this morning on the Great Northern
road, near Anoka. The affair was re
ported to Superintendent of Police
Smith about ten o'clock this forenoon
by several of the victims, whose ap
pearance indicates rough treatment,
and whose story was in substance as
follows: The train was a mixed freight
and one of the box cars contained twenty-six
harvest hands who were on their
wny home from the north, and they all
possessed more or less money, having
paid the conductor for the privilege of
of riding.
When the train reached Anoka nt the
hour stated It was boarded by three
men, who as soon as the train had got
ten under way, proceeded to hold up
and rob the harvest hands at the point
of revolvers. Two of the robbers held
the occupants in abeyance at the point
of guns, while the third selected a mnn
and went through him and after being
relieved of what money and valuables
he possessed, the victim was command
ed to lump for his life, and if ho hesi
tated he was pushed or kicked from the
car. As the train was going at n rapid
speed, tt is feared that several men
were killed. One 0 the men who fell
at police headquarters had his arms
badly skinned, and the 'others were
more or less injured. The affair is be
ing Investigated.

place near here on Sunday evening.
Susiume Travis, a 11-year-old girl, of
Iteyuoldsvllle, was shut through the
side while eating supper at the house
of Benjamin Ferrler, and received very
serious injuries. The shot wus tired by
an unknown person outside of the
housc who escaped in the d.'wkuess.
It Is believed that the bullet was
Intended for Ferrler. He Is LS yems of
age, and by inairying Miss Travis, a
gtrl only 12 years old, Incurred the Ill
will of his neighbors.

Den by today Informed the department
of state that the Chinese foreign of
fice hnd awarded to the Baldwin Loco
motive works, of Philadelphia, the low
est bidders, the contract for building
eight locomotives for the imperial rail
ways. These engines, which will be the first
American locomotives used in China,
have been ordered largely as samples,
and If their work proves entirely satis
factory to the Chinese government it Is
expected that a much larger number
will be "ordered.
