Several drunken men who were pas
sengers on Peckvllle car No. 6 last
Tuesday evening annoyed the other
passengers so much, by their shameful
language, that the conductor was
forced to eject them. During the scuf
fle that followed blows were struck juid
the conductor was bein;: badly used
when he suddenly whlpeil out a revol
ver. The sight of the weapon Immedi
ately put the desperadoes to llir.bt.
During the fight Superintendent
Charles Powell was struck several vic
ious blows. He was engaged yester
day In endeavoring to secure the names
of his assailants.
Andrew MeClurln, of West Market
street, has returned from New York,
where he underwent a critical opera
tion. Miss Maggie Coyne, of Hlootn avenue,
Is seriously ill with typhoid fever.

Thomas Coyne got Into a fight with an
old man named Patrick Feeney, of
Maple street, and his son. They beat
the old man unmercifully and warrants
were sworn out for their arrests before
Alderman John J. Ruddy, of the Twen
tieth ward. Constable Michael Me
Murrny has been after them since and
brought them yesterday before Justice
of the Peace Grifliths, of Taylor, where
they entered ball for appearance at
court. Patrick Coyne and John Kear
ney, of Minooka, qualified ns bonds
men, the former for Conroy, the latter
for Coyne.

The Lackawanna township school
hoard held a cry lively session lsst
evening In No. 1 school house. The
matter of purchasing a plot of ground
for school purposes was the principal
business that engaged the attention of
the directors. Director King moved that
the board buy the lot oftered by the
Donahoe estate for $1,400 and Director
Hlgpins amended the motion to the
effect that the board purchase the plot
of six lots offered by Mr. Gibbons for
$2,400. The land is outside of the dis
trict. Mr. Hlggins' proposition carried
and the board decided to buy the Gib
bons land by the following vote. Yeas
O'Lenahan, Foley, McCrlndle and Hlg
gins; nays King and Loverlng. Prof,

tion asking for an Increase of salaries,
