was held at a colored camp meeting
rear Dnnmur Sunday. Persons present
represented Moses, Aaron, and the
priesthood were dressed In their royal
apparel. Rev. H. E. Brown opened the
services hy leadlllK several chapters
of the Epistle of John. A lamb, which
had been tied to a tree, was led to the
ollar and slain by Rev. Air. Drown. A
white pigeon was dipped In the lambs
Mood and then set free. The lamb was
roasted and the enting of the passover
occurred.
After this the lamb's bones wen?
burned. In the center ff the grove a
large wheel was erected. It was
turned by sixteen burly nejrroes rep
resenting Christian faith In olden times.

Susquehanna, July 15. John Hellor,
of Cascade Valley, X. Y., a few days
since, captured an American eagle, af
ter a hard fight. He had set a steel
trap to catch a fox whk'h had been
stealing his hens. On Monday morning
he discovered his trap was missing.
Searching about for It, he heard a
scream and commotion among a Hook
of crows in a grove nearby. In a mo
ment a great American eagle arose
from the woods, dragging a trap which
was fastened to one leg-. It at once
flew to a high tree. Hollar discharged
his shot gun at the bird and It fell to
the ground, wounded In one wing. Find
ing an old rope nearby, Hellar attempt
ed to bind the eagle, but it fought vig
orously with beuk and talons, inflicting
severe wounds upon the man. Sotlng
that he was being beaten, Hellar ran to
a neighboring Held where a ninn was at
work, and the two returned to the con
test. In Hellar's absence, the crows,
seeing the engle wounded und handi
capped, had attacked It, but it fought a
good fight und killed six und wounded
as many more of the crows. The two
men rallied to the attack and succeed
ed, by thp 11 Id of a rnpe and n piece -of
fence rail. In overpowering the eagle
and taking It to Helb'.r's home, where it
la gradually recovering from Its In
juries. The bird measures 7 feet from
tip to tip und stands 5 feet high. It

Milford states that the old McKune
homestead, In which the Rook of Mor
mon was translated, is situated be
tween Susquehanna and New Milford.

concludes with the assertion that "the

THE ARMY WORM.
The terrible army worm Is destroying
crops throughout this section. A Held
of corh or oats will go down before the
destroyer In twenty-fuur hours. The
farmers ard plowing trenches around
Iheir fields, scattering poison, etc., to
destroy the worm, but with ill success.
In some Instances unripened grain is
being gathered, to save something, anu
farmers' associations are devising ways
and means. With an excessive drought,
the grasshopper and the army worm all
crowded into one short season, n eon
dlton certainly confronts the farmer.
RAILROAD MATTERS.
The Erie conductors will excurt to
Shohola Glen August 0.
The Montrose-Tunkhanock road is
getting In readiness to be wide-gauged.
It is now claimed that the Erie will
not place the quarterly mileage books
on sale until the courts pass upon the
constitutionality of the law making the
issuing of the books compulsory.
Several passenger locomotives are be
ing constructed In the Erie shops.
For several months Erie trainmen
have been singularly free from death
and accident.
The report that the Erie has pur
chased a" large number of steel cars from
the Carnegie steel works In Pittsburg
is said to have been premature.
"Faith removes mountains." If dear
old Honesdale only had faith enough to
remove the Hooslc mountain, the
"Maple City" might be on the main line

STRUCK BY LIGHTNING.
During the electrical storm on Monday
evening, lightning struck the Medway
home, on Grand street, occupied by Erie
Engineer George W. Ball, demolishing
the chimney. The bolt went down Into
a sitting room stove, from which it
emerged, and, after skurrylng about two
rooms, went Into a cupboard In a pan
try, where It spent Its force, breaking
dishes and setting papers, etc., on fire.
There were several persons In the room,
but they all escaped Injury.
HITS AND MISSES.
It Is remarked that the country, from
now on, will be full of lecturers, who
have barely escaped being killed by
Turks, In Armenia, and by gold dele
gates who escaped alive from the Chi
cago convention.
Scranton experts have been In Cho
conut examining the new coal found.
Their predictions are unknown to the
general public, but next winter it Is
feared that Susquehanna people will
be compelled to continue purchasing
Forest City and Mayfkld slate. Many
a good garden has been shipped over
here and sold as coal.
While some quarrymen were at work
m-ar Starrucca, a few days since, they
unearthed In a rock, the footprints of a
human teing measuring eighteen inches
long. This is positive evidence that
Great Uend people walked this earth
several centuries ago.
A Wayne county man killed fifteen
snakes and died from excitement. A
fet ling obituary In the Honesdale Inde
pendent, concludes with the words, "To
die is gain." Under the circumstances,
decidedly yes!

WRECKED THE TIRE.
A Susquehanna man was riding his
wheel a few evenings since, when he
leaned against a fence to take a rest.
He was no more than dismounted when
three mosquitoes with the monogram
"N. J." plainly discernible on their
backs, mounted th" buck tire of his
bicycle and inserted their noses. The
compressed air In the tire immediately
felled the pests, and one by one they ex
ploded with a toriillc noise. The us
quebanna man walked home with a
raised tire.
