MEANEY IS WANTED.
Buflal Offer Is Outfielder Good
enough and Shortstop Lcewe.
The rejected offer of Owner Franklin
of the Buffalo club to trade Outfielder
Qoodenough and Shortstop Leewe for
Scranton'a valued Pat Meaney, made
in personby Franklin when he waa here
with his club last month. Is still rank
ling In the bosom of the Bison manage
ment. The offer hus been renewed and
here's what the Buffalo Times has to
aay about it:
Manager Row Is Very anxious to sign
Meaney and says that Patrick Is very
anxious to go to that city with him. Some
years ago Manager Chapman, who was
managing the Bisons, saw Meaney at Har
rlsburg, and made some complimentary
remarks about his work. The Jealous
tiamsDurg fans construed the praise as
a sort of an offer to Meaney and raised
a howl about It, but as Buffalo made no
further effort to obtain the man, matters
soon quieted down to their normal state.
In those days Meaney was an ambidex
trous twlrler like Ely and Chamberlain.
As such he was given a short twirl by the
Philadelphia club, but as he was not suc
cessful soon reverted to the Harrisburg
club. Later he was gobbled up by Scran

ton. If Meaney comes to Buffalo he will
get a substantial Inorease of salary.
There would be a howl loud enough
to be heard from kingdom-come if the
Scranton management even considered
making such a deal. If It's players
the Scranton owners want, Meaney is
one of that same; if It's drawing players
they want, Meaney is one of that same,
also, and if he was let go there would
be a big and perceptible drop in Scran
ton gate receipts.
The Scranton management will not
trade one good player for a dozen of
the stripe of Goodenuugh and Leewe.
BARONS HOME TODAY.
To Begin i Four-Game Series with
Wilkes-Barre Club's Good
Work While Away.
The Barons returned last night from
a trip during which they played eight
games, losing live and winning three.
None of the games lost, however, was
by more than two runs, one game ex
cepted; of the three Raines won, each
was captured after the opposing club
had secured a lead at the'start. All of
this goes to show that under Urlltln's
management the team hus been putting
up a strong article of bull and will
give Wllkes-Hurre a. desperate fight
throughout the series which begins at
Athletic park this afternoon.
Either Corbett, the young Baltimore
tin and brother of "Pompadour James,"
or Ulllon, the ex-Rochester man, will
pitch. Bowerman, the catcher aectirvd
from Baltimore, and who is mentioned
In high teVms by Clrittlu, hus not re
covered from the Injury to his thumb,
received In the game at Rochester. He
will be able to appear In next week's
games against Providence and Spring
field. Tomorrow the Barons will play In
Wilkes-Barre. unci the Saturday games
will be played here in the morning and
at Wilkes-Barre In the afternoon. The
two clubs have each won throe games
from the other that In. according to
I'mplre Gaffnoy's decision which lost
Scranton a game by forfeit, otherwise
Scranton has won three und Wilkes
Burre two gomes.
Putting aside the technlcnl right or
wrong of the forfeit, the Scranton play
ers know that the other club Is credited
with a gume it did not win by actuul
playing and they are anxious to win
back the laurels which on a lluke were
taken from them.
Though the club on the trip lost more
games than were won the cranks who
have closely followed the Barons' work
know thut the team wh deserving of
better fortune. In each of the four
cities they visited the base bull writers
without exception praised them and no
ticed the Improvement that had been
mode since McDcrmntt had the team
in tow. So, the funs knowing this, it
Is probably that they will give Grltlln
and his men a. good reception; cer
tainly there has been enough real, good
work on their pnrt to merit a generous
welcome and no doubt they will get it.

MAY LAY DOUBLE TRACK.
Dispute Over Lund nt (ins House De
cided in Favor of' D. At II. Co.
Judge L. H. Bennett, of the Luzerne
county bench, who was appointed mas
ter Jn the equity suit brought by the
Scranton Gas and Water company
against the Northern Coal nnd Iron
company, yesterday filed his report In
the office of Prothonotary Pryor. and
decides In favor of the defendant. The
report la a voluminous document.
The Scranton Gas nnd Water com
pany by virtue of a right claimed un
der its charter, took possession of a
lot of ground on Scranton street on the
easterly bank of the Lackawanna river.
This Is where the gas house of the
company now stands. From a point
above the Dodgetown bridge to the
stone arch over which the Delaware,
Lackawanna and Western tracks run,
the defendunt company has been un
able to lay a double track on account
of the opposition of the Gas and Water
company, which claims that a double
track would necessitate an encroach
ment on the land on which the gas
house stands, and that such encroach
ment would work Injury to the city at
large as well as the company.
The railroad rompany, under Its
charter, was privileged to take a right
of way sixty feet wide; only fifteen feet
Were taken when the single track was
laid In 1871. and when the enlarged
business of the railroad made a double
track necessary the company went
ahead and proceeded to take up the re
mainder of its right of way, but the
Gas and Water company interposed.
Judge Bennett decides that the railroad
company has the right now to take its
sixty feet of right or way the same as
it had when its charter was granted
and bestowed upon It that privilege.
The Delaware and Hudson company
Is operating the line of the defendant
company now and It Is known under
the title of the former.

NO CARS TO NAY AUQ.
t'ouipluiiit at the Poor Facilities for
Reaching the Park.
The following letter has been received
by The Tribune from a lady of promi
nence in the Seventeenth ward. At her
request her name Is withheld:
Editor of The Tribune.
Sir: You have at various times called
attention to the fact that street car com
panies ure supposed to run cars for the
accommodation of the public. May 1 ask
vou to make a note of the fact that our ac
commodating company have ceased to run
cars on the Mulberry Street line to Nay
Aug falls? If 1 wish to take my children
to the woods for an afternoon, or show
my friends the falls, or have a picnic In the
nines. I must pay my car rare on tne rv-
tersburg line, be put off a big distance
away from the park and walk up In the
sun over a stony, dusty roud. Is It right
for them to control u roud and then not
use It, or ullow others to do so, for tha
purpose for which it was built?
I am told that u special car does run on
Sunday and many men are taken up there
then. But ladles und children who do
not want to go on Sunday or with these
men. may flay at home or walk! Where
are our city councils, and our park com
missioners? Can't some convenient way
of getting to the park be arranged?
I do not wish to write to them person
ally nor put any communication in papers
over my own name, but I do want to
enter my protest as a resident of Scran
ton and say that I think the street car
company owes It to us to give us cars ev.
ery day to Nay Aug. and I represent a
large number of Interested parties. I 1m
ashamed 1o have to confess to strangers
the facts in the case.
