The senate passed the new general deficiency bill today In 1ms than three-quarters of an hour. Ordinarily a bill of 130 printed panes would have taxed the powers of the reading clerk for at least two hours; but the reading of this bill was com pleted In half an hour. An attempt was made by Mr. Harris (Dem., Tenn.) to have the claims under the Bowman act aggregating about half a million dollars placed in the bill, but they were ruled out on a point of order, and the bill was promptly passed. A final con ference report was made on the post oillce appropriation bill and was agreed to. Partial conference reports on the Indian appropriation bill and on the District of Columbia appropriation bill were made and agreed to; and further conferences were ordered- The Immigration bill was takn up and Mr. Morgan (Dem., Ala.) made another Bpeech upon the question of the war In Cuba, in the course of which he dis claimed having heretofore said any thing offensive to the Queen Urgent of Hpaln. lie eulogized her as a woman of very high character and of almost unexampled virtue, and said that she was entitled by virtue of the regency of womanhood to the utmost respect. nnd thnt every senator so treated her and so spoke of her. He spoke of Gen eral Weyler, however, as a brutal sol dier, who plunged his bloodstained sword In the bosoms of woman and hIMivn. HOfSE PROCEEDINGS. Conference reports were presented and agreed to on the following appropria tion bills: Fostottice (final), Indian and District of Columbia. TO MAINTAIN A QUORUM. In order to maintain the presence of a quorum the house adopted resolutions offered by Mr. Dlngley (Rep., Me.) re voking all leaves of absence except those granted on account of Illness, and directing the sergeant-at-arms to tele graph other absent members that their presence here Is necessary to the trans action of public business. In this con nection, the house heard with applause, the message announcing that the sen ate had passed without amendment the general deficiency bill, which the house passed Saturday afternoon. Twice Mr. Daniels (Rep., N. Y.) en deavored to bring up for consideration the report of elections committee No. 1 on the contested election case of Tru man II. Aldtich (.Republican) vs. Oscar W. Underwood (Democrat) from the Ninth Alabama district. The first time the house refused 53 to 64 to enter upon Its consideration; the vote on the second motion had not been announced when at 6 o'clock a further recess was taken until 10 o'clock tomorrow morn ing. It will be In order then. It is un derstood there Is to be no adjournment of the house until It finally adjourns for the session. GENERAL NOTES. The president this aft.noon approved the modified general deficiency bill. The naval conferees agreed finally this afternoon on the battleships In "the naval bill as was indicated In United Press despatches of Saturday night. Three ships are provided for with a stipulation that contracts for armor pates are not to be made at any price until congress shall have further acted upon the subject. The house conferees have offered a compromise to the senate conferees on the Indian bill, which will be accepted and this bill, together with the naval bill, will be got out of the way early to morrow morning. The house will agree to the former conference report, cutting off appropriations for sectarian Indian schools at the end of the next fiscal year, with a proviso that the secretary of the Interior be Instructed to divide the appropriations as evenly as possible during the next fiscal year between the various denominations. This will end the sectarian school question and re move the one great stumbling block that has for several days stood In the way of a final settlement of this ques tlon. SUED FOR A GOLDEN TOE NAIL. Miss 8elma, the Hinger, Refuses to Pay for Her Vanity. New York, June 8. Miss Florence Sel- mu, the singer, Is probably the only wo man In the world who ever wore a golden toe nail. This, together with the fact that the golden nail Is no longer worn has led' to her being made a defendant In a peculiar suit. Miss Selma's real name Is Sears, and she is a sister-in-law of "Napoleon" Ives. Bhe Is petite, pretty and has big black eyes. "Yes,1 she said last night at th&,IIotel Martin, "I've got to defend a lawsuit (or $54 and It's all about my big toe. You see, some time, ago I was riding my bicycle up town and In trying to get out of the way of a team I fell and hurt my toe. ' The nail began to grow In. That Is not pleas ant; neither Is It pretty. No woman has a pretty foot when the nail of the great toe grows In. Then I began to think. I knew that they made teeth with gold crowns, why not a gold crown for a toe nail? The Idea was pretty, was It not T Then It might help the Ingrowing nail. I went to Dr. W. J. Leeds and told my troubles 'But. madam,' said he, drawing him self up to his full height; 'but. madam. I am a dentist I am not a chiropodist.' "Then I Blghedand looked at htm with pleading eyes. He finally consented and made the crown. It fitted nicely, and when I went away from his office I thought I could go on with my work and keep up my bicycle .riding. But, alas! my toe began to get very sore. I couldn't walk. I lost two engage ments In Chicago and one In Boston. Then I went to see a surgeon. He laughed at what he called woman's van ity and removed the golden crown. Then my foot got well again. I told Dr. Leeds I would not pay hinu He Bnld he would begin suit. He may fill the foot, but I will never foot the bill." tOne t Little merit save advertise below may t you many dollars by filling that vacant house or barn. Why not try an "ad' now?
