Twelve years ago today the Penn Clothing and Shoe House first saw the light of day. The store was
then a small room, size 20 by 50 feet, and the stock it contained was equal in value to the volume of our present
business for about one-half day. From this humble beginning there arose, step by step, the Big Store of today,
the biggest of its kind in Scranton. Every year recorded an increase in patronage and popularity, doing a
business today of twenty times the amount done the first year. This most remarkable achi evement was
brought about by incessant hard labor and sincere honesty to the interest of the public All efforts would have
been in vain it we had not met with the liberal response of the public. But we did. From the very start the public
co-operated with us, and for this co-operation we return our thanks, and we have decided to make the coming
week a Grand Bargain Carnival. The effect of this sale will be a loss to us, but what is that compared to the
liberal custom bestowed on us by the public for the past twelve years. But we won't stop here. We'll p;o still
further and
Distribute Cash to the Charitable Institutions of Scranton.
We will give one-half per cent, of our total receipts of this entire week to the institutions named below
and will publish in next Friday's papers the amount paid to each one. One-half per cent, may seem small, but
taking into consideration the great reductions made throughout the store, big sales will be the result, and thus
a handsome amount will be realized.
