Mr. Hughes SLAPPED IN THE DARK. Mrs. Minor Johnson told a sad tale last night. She was coming down Hennessy court at 11 o'clock when sud denly, from a dark ' pluce a hand reached out and smote her upon the cheek. The hand was that of a wo man, Jennie Smith, by name. The blow was responded to in kind and during the fray Mrs. Johnson was badly beaten so she said. Alderman Blair was sought after but up to u late hour no urrests were made. DEATH OF PATRICK HF.AI.EY. Patrick Healey died at his home. 235 Meridian street, at It. 15 yesterday morning alter a brief Illness. He is survived by a widow and live children. They are John Healey. of Philadelphia; Mrs. Andrew Judge, of Jackson street; Mrs. James Ruane, of Price street, and Mlsa Kate Healey. The funeral will take place Friday morning at o'clock and a requiem mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's church. DIED LAST NIGHT. " "William H. Reese, a well-known resi dent of North Fllmore avenue, died at o'clock lust evening. Tuesday night, after several weeks' Illness, Mr. Reese became unconscious, and remained so until death came. He was employed at the Pine Brook colliery. A wife and several children survive. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made. NEWS NOTES. Rev. M. H. The Republicans of the Nineteenth ward will hold a caucus at Nicholas Sossong's hotel on Prospect avenue to morrow night for the purpose of nomin alntg a candidate for the office of com mon i-uumil to rill the unexpired term of P. J. Hickey. The names of Ueorg Wlrth and Fred Murwh are foremost among those mentioned on the Republi can side. The Democrats will also caucus on Saturday between the hours of 4 and 7 p. m. for the purpose of placing In nom ination a candidate for the same ottlce and term. DEATH OF LEOPOLD YEARING. Leopold Tearing, who was appointed a patrolman by ex-Mayor Fellows and served for about two years, died Tues day morning from an attack of Brlght's disease of the kidneys. He had been ailing for the past year or two, but was possessed of such a strong constitution that a sudden death was unexpected. A wife and four children survive him. SHORTER PARAGRAPHS. Preliminary Injunction Asked for By the John Church Company. Argument was heard In equity court yesterday for a preliminary Injunction in the case of the John Church com pany against Guernsey Brothers of this city. The complainant Is the manufacturer of the Everett piano for which the defendant was agent In this vicinity. The object of the Injunction Is to re strain the' Guernseys from collecting the rents on Everett pianos, the com plainant maintaining that the Guern seys were merely acting as their agents while the defendants aver that they purchased the pianos outright from the Guernseys. The stock ruled weak until Just near the close when It suddenly spurted up ito 1124. The early weakness was due to short selling by local bears who professed to be greatly disturbed by the further reduction of He In the price of refined and the reports of poor trade condi tions. At the decline, however, one Broadway concern which usually acts for leading bear operators purchased nearly rive thousand shares of the stock and this started buying for both accounts. The capacity of the advance alarmed the shorts and on their efforts to cover they bid prices upon themselves.
