f THE KCRANTON THIBTTNE FRIDAY MOIINIKO, MAY 1, 1896. BUSINESS BREVITIES. NEAT NEW BREAKER. The Dela ware and Hudson Canal company haa Just completed another new breaker near Plymouth, which for economy In the preparation of coal for the market and convenience for the men to be em plnved about It Is the peer of anything of Its kind In the company possession. It la an Imposing structure, having an altitude of about 130 feet and is suita bly located on a gentle slope a short distance to the north of No. 2 colliery of the same company. The breaker is equipped throughout with the latest improved machinery, such' as patent slate pickers, patent dumps, screens, etc. There are also a few features which nre entirely new. The most Im portant f these is the method of doing away with the culm and slate. A line of conveyors, operated by the breaker engine, which run through the waste pockets, gather up the culm and slate and convey It to a large pocket a short distance from the breaker where, after being mixed with water, it Is sent through n bore hole tnto the worked out portions of the old No. & mine. The slate before descending into the mines is sent through a crusher situated di rectly over the bore hole and ground tine enough to be easily conveyed by the water to any portion of the Inside workings. The waste from No. 2 col liery, of which there Is already per haps half a million tons on the surface, will be similarly disposed of through the same bore holes. This has been found to be the most satisfactory way of getting rid of the culm piles. It also has a double benefit to the company. A great deal of surface is not only saved, but the old workings are filled up, thereby protecting the mines against caves and saving thousands of tons of coal.
