Church.
Many of the friends of -the late
Samuel J. Bates turned out yesterday
to puy their last tribute to him whom
they loved and respected. The funeral
was held from the residence on Park
street, irom w here the cortege proceed
ed to the Itnptist church, where the ser
vices over the remains were held. The
services were conducted by the Rev.
1'. K. Jepson, pastor of the church.
Mr. Jepson preached a very touching
sermon which contained much sympa
thy and consolation for the bereaved
ones.
Three members of the Shield of Hon
or and Loyal Knights of America, of
which the deceased was a member bore
the remains to the grave, at Mjiple
wood cemetery. The Moral offerings
were very beautiful.
QUIET WEDDING.

for Life.
A quiet wedding took place Sunday
night at the residence of Alderman
Bunnell, No. 211 South Blrkett street.
The contracting parties were Pearl
Bunnell, son of the alderman and Miss
Kllza Luke, w.ho resides near Crystal
Lake. Xo one outside of the Immediate
family knew of the affair which will
be a great surprise to the friends of
the young couple.
The ceremony was witnessed only by
the relatives of the groom.
The young people will reside for the
present with the groom's father. They
will dispense with a wedding trip.

A Well Known citizen Called to Hest
Yesterday Aftcrnnnn.
Yesterday afternoon at the home of
his brother-in-law G. W. Kvans. on
Wayne street, occurred the death of
Richard Thomas.
' Mr. Thomas hn been sick for some
time with pneumonia, but it was not
until the last few days that it took a
serious form.
The deceasid Was a very popular
man, possessing a host of friends who
will regret to hear of his death.

of Philadelphia on the steamship Il
linois on board ot which there was a
case of varioluld. They were held in
quarantine for a number of days, in
which time no new cases had devel
opeda They will, however, be kept un
der close observation Immediately upon
their arrival here and every precaution
will be used to prevent an outbreak.

llulsey Wells Met urns from Work and
Hnds Ilia Wife a Corpse.
Mrs. Isabellu Wells, aged 4 years,
wife of llalsey Wells, a llrenian on the
Jersey Central, was found dead in her
bed Sunday morning at 2.9 o'clis-k.
Halsey Wells, husband of deceased,
left his home on Friday morning and
bidding good-bye to his wife, went
work. His run is from Seranton to
Phillipsburg. and he' gets home ev TV
other day. At 2.30 Sunday mornliu Ii"
returned home, and tinging the bell us
usual received no response. He went
around to the kitchen und found the
door unlocked, and upon entering lls
covered the dishes unwashed and th"
,hre out In the stove. He lighted a
lamp and went upstairs, where he
found his wife lying in the bed. cold
and lifeless.
A physician was summoned aad he
gave it as his opinion that the woman
had been dead twelve or lifteeii Ii itirs.
The coroner was notified and vldtel
the bereaved home on Sunday after
noon. After hearing the facts in the
case he decided that an inquest wa
not necessary. .
Deceased had been subject tr nt
titcks of heart failure for some thn ,
and It was this that cuus-l her death.
She was last seen alive by her next
door neighbor. Mrs. Harvey, about It
o'clock Friday morning.

GUILT ADMITTED.
Two Boarders Acquitted of tho Charge
Aro to lie Rearrested.
David Jenkins, a saloon keeper of
Nanticoke, and his two boarders,
George W. Robinson and David Lewis,
went to Glen Lyon on Easter Sun
day to visit friends. Robinson and
Lewis returned before Jenkins and find
ing the house locked, entered through
a window. Jenkins returned later In
the evening and next day discovered
that $130 In money, a watch and ling
were missing. Jenkins suspected his
boarders and went before 'Squire
Powell, where he secured a warrant
and had the men arrested. At the hear
ing there was no positive proof of their
guilt, and they were discharged.
Officers Thomas and Farrell, of Nan
ticoke, got hold of Robinson, and it Is
said he made admissions tending to
Incriminate Lewis and himself.
PLYMOUTH TRAGEDY.
John Nice Is the Vietira-llo Lived a Week
After n Brutal Heating.
John Nice, who was so brutally as
saulted In a fight at Welsh Hill. Ply
mouth, on Monday night lust, died at
3 o'clock yesterday morning.
Three men are implicated in the mur
der and one, Mike Pushka, was landed
In Jail on Saturday. The others. It is
supposed, went to Carbondale to seek
work, and warrants are Issued for their
arrest

have filed reasons for a new trial and
in arrest of judgment for Frank Shaf
fer, who was convicted of murder In
the first degree.
