MARKET AND STOCK REPORT
Wall Street Review.
New Tork, April 10. While specula
tion at the Stock Exchange today at
intervals was exceedingly dull, yet on
the whole the dealings were character
ized by greater confidence and strength
than on any previous day of the week.
The advance In prices was quite gen
eral, and the Improvement was mainly
due to a change of sentiment In regard
to the probable action of President
Cleveland on the Cuban belligerency
matter. The fact that the foreign mar
kets for American securities are undis
turbed by the action of the house un
doubtedly has a good effect. Still an
other factor In the day's speculation
was the reduction In the rates of ster
ling exchange which prevented gold
shipments by tomorrow's steamers and
render exports of the yellow metal Im
probable for at least some days to come.
The bears attempted to check the up
ward movement in prices by attacking
American Tobacco and one or two oth
er specialties which happened tq be
without effective support. Tobacco
was sold down from 84(4 to and
closed at a merely fractional recovery.
Despite the selling of Tobacco the gen
eral markot continued strong In the
late trading. Manhattan scored the
greatest rise, selling up from 109 to 11H&
on the movement by the city authori
ties to accord the company tncreased
facilities to extend its lines. The stock
left off at 110. Sugar was conspicu
ous for strength throughout and rose
to 119all8Vi on purchases by houses
identified with officials of the trust.
The Grangers, Chicago Oas, (leneral
' Klectrlc, Louisville und Nashville and
Tennessee Coal and Iron advanced 4al
per cent., but there was nothing In the
remainder of the list calling for special
comment. Speculation closed Arm In
tone. Net changes, show advances of
al4 per cent, outside ot American
Tobacco, which declined . Total sales
'were 103.892 shares.

Dl'SS'i REVIEW OF TRADE.
Stocks Extremely Dull, Yet Railroad
Traf fie lias Beon tie avy-A Ulanee at
the Business Sltnation.
New York. April 10. R. Q. Dun ft
Co. will say tomorrow in their weekly
review of trade:
Failures for the past week have been
209 In the United States against 207
last year, and 33 in Canada against 27
lajit year.
The volume of business has not on the
whole Increased, nor have prices ap
preciably advanced since April 1, when
the range for all commodities was the
lowest ever known In this country.
Iireadstuffs and Iron products have
risen slightly, but some other articles
have declined, and the root of the mat
ter Is that the demand for consumption
Is still below expectations.
The Injury done tcx winter wheat by
storms njid frosts at the west would
appear from reports of state officers
to have been considerable. Remark
ably low estimates of condition are pub
lished by some state authorities and
while there may be the customary ex
aggeration, there has evidently been
much actual loss, which tends at pres
ent to lessen purchases of farmers and
of dealers) In farming districts. But
the reports are not more gloomy than
a year ago, and the quantity of wheat
which has come from farms since Aug
ust 1st. has been 163.7S1.594 bushels,
against 129,076,460 to the same date last
year.
Stocks have been extremely dull, and
yet railroad traffic Is heavy. Reports
of earnings have not Improved, the
March statement covering practically
all the roads usually reporting shows
an increase of 4.2 per cent, over last
years, but decrease of 11.2 compared
with 1893. and Is less satisfactory than
returns of January of February. Do
mestic business reflected by clearing,
house exchanges continues about 20 per
cent, smaller than In 1893, though
slightly better than last year, tho oc
currence of Good Friday preventing
exact comparison. Foreign trade shows
a decrease of nearly 10 per cent. In
exports from the week, though as much
Increase In March, while Imports gain
nearly 20 per cent, though In March
the decrease was 14 per cent. The bil
let pool and other combinations have
raised prices of pig Iron and steel, but
as yet finished products have gained
scarcely anything, nor has demand for
them increased.
Prices of boots and shoes do not
change, though leather Is lower. Hides
are a little stronger at Chicago, re
ceipts being small. Wool Is weaker,
with sales of the week the smallest for
many years. Prices tend lower, ex
cept for fine washed fleece and' manu
facturers are rapidly reducing produc
tion. There Is fair demand In the dress
goods branch, but tt Is estimated that
not 3.40 per cent, of the men's wear ma
chinery Ib at workvt, There have also
been cotton mills stopping or reducing
time this week. : Further reduction In
shirting prints, to the lowest point ever
touched, failed to Increase the demand
materially. '
When you think of the Nickel Plate
Road It brings to mind that delicious
meal you had In the Dining Car, and
the fine service and Low Rates, and
you wonder why people will travel via
any other line.

LORD BISHOP OF TORONTO. CAN.
The Rt. Rev. A Sweatman, D.D.. D. C. L...
Lord Bishop of l ot onto. Stcurce Ke
lief In lea Minutes by the I'se of Dr.
Agncw's Catarrhal Powder.
A busy man like the Bishop of Toronto
can 111 afford to have his capacity for
work broken Into by catarrhal trouble, or
Its simpler but yet serious phase of cold
In the head. And yet, to use a vulgurism,
there Is hardly anything that knocks
a man out more quickly than what we or
dinarily term, "Just a cold In the head."
There Is a way out, however, of this trou
ble, and the Bishop does not hesitate to
say, over his own signature, and for the
good of others, that be has used Dr. Ag
new's Catarrhal Powder, and derived in
stant relief In catarrhal troubles.
One short puff of the breath through the
blower, supplied with each bottle ot Dr.
Agnew's Catarrhal Powder, diffuses this
Powder over the surface of the nasal pas
sages. Painless and delightful to use. It
relieves in ten mlutex, and permanently
cures Catarrh, Hay Fever, Colds, Head
ache, Sore Throat, Tonsilltls and Deaf
ness. 60 cents. Sold by Matthews Bros.
Piles! Piles! Itching Plies!
Symptoms Moisture; intense itching
and stinging; most at night; worse by
scratching. If allowed to continue tu
mors form, which often bleed and ulcer
ate, becoming very sore. Swayne's
Ointment stops the Itching and bleed
ing, heals ulceration, and in most cases
removes me tumors. At druggists, or
by mail, for 60 cents. Dr. Swayne A.
