DODGE AND SHERMAN SCORED Metrle System of Weight and Measures Recommitted ia the UouM-Agrlonl-tural Appropriation Bill Agreed to-Other Topic. Washington, April 8. Senator Tur ple (Dem., Ind.) who has achieved quite a reputation in the senate, in pic turesque language, save an illustra tion of his powers in that line today, affording an hour and a half's enter tainment to his brother senators and to a larce audience in the galleries. The speech was made In support of the Joint resolution introduced on the first of April by Mr. Call (Dem.. Fla.) pro posing Intervention In the war now being prosecuted in Cuba. The objects of Mr. Turple's Invective were not so much Oeneral Weyler and the Spanish government as the chairman of the committee on foreign relations Mr. Sherman (Rep., Ohio) and the Junior senator from Massachusetts, Mr. Lodge. He ascribed to Mr. Bherman helpless Inertia, delay and irrational obstruction; and spoke of his taking refuge In the crypt of the conference committee, very glad to be rid of his former action. Mr. Lodge was por trayed by him as belonging to the jingo class of extremists, and as being singularly gifted with the power to clothe nn Interesting and exciting sub ject with nil the dullness of time worn oomnion places. He drew an amusing sketch of the controversy between Mr. Lodge and the Spanish minister and said that he had expected it to end in a duel In which the champion of sen atorial privilege would go Into the lists, fully armed, his visor down, and his lance at rest. Hut, Instead of that, the junior senator from Massachusetts had retired to the room of the committee on foreign relations and regaled himself on "pun's, mere putts." Mr. Turple rinsed his sarcastic remarks on Mr. TLSVn lire pygmies still, though perched on alps. At the close of this speech, the Joint resolution went over without action, and the remainder of the day's session was taken up with the Indian appro priation bill. - IJefore reaching a final vote on It the senate at f.03 adjourned until tomor row. HOUSE PROCEEDINGS. The house spent two hours today In roll calls upon questions relating to the bill to nuike the metric system of weights and measures legal system in the United States after Jan. 1, VM. and Anally it was teconimitted to the com mittee on coinage, weights and meas ures. The first vote was on the motion to order the bill to a third reading. That was arreed to yeas 119, nays 117, not voting US. A motion was made to recoiiHiuiT aim 10 luy imii nioiiuii un the table, the ordinary parliamentary device to clinch action upon a meas ure followed, and the house refused, 132 to 111, to lay the motion to recon sider on the table. The motion to re consider was then agreed to 142 to 9U. whereupon the bill was sent back to the committee, MAGIC IN HIS MUSIC. Pittsburg Boosts a Svengall with Mys terious Vocal Culture Powers. Pittsburg, April 8. A veritable Sven gall has been discovered In Pittsburg. He professes to have discovered a method of perfect voice formation, and boldly asserts his ability to impart this knowledge, producing at will In others perfect singing voices. His own voice, he says, is absolutely perfect, and he van secure qualities of tone end reach ranging In scale never before heard of. The declaration and mysterious per sonality have attracted to him a band of disciples, who regard him almost with veneration.. His name Is Haydn Tllla. He came to this city several months ago from Italy. One woman has loft a good church choir position In order to devote her entire time to her voice culture. She suys she was formerly a mezzo soprano, but she now claims to be an extraordin arily high soprano. Another womnn, who says she never sang a note In her life until she saw Tllla. pretends, with out hesitation, to be now n prima don na with a range up to high E flat. Tllla says (irover Cleveland possesses the proper formation of face which is the most important requisite for a perfect voice. KKFUSED HIS LOVE. A Southern Doctor Pills a Woman Full of Shot. Talbottom, Ga., April 8. One of the most fearful tragedies in the annals of crime was enacted here last night when Dr. W. 8. Ryder, a prominent dentist, shot and killed Miss Sallle Emma Owen, Ryder had brought MIhs Owen Into town from her home, nbout ten miles out, that afternoon, and left her at the home of J. H. The deal ings In stocks were only 15l43 shares. At the opening the market was strong and prices moved up tt4 per cent., Manhalten leading with sale up to 110. The stock was bought on the re vival of the reports that the company would make an alliance with the Van derbilts. other firm stocks were Gen eral Electric, the Grangers and Louis ville and Nashville. General Electric sold up to 38- on a report that the negotiations with the Fort Wayne com pany were progressing favorably. Louisville and Nashville moved up to 50Vi on covering of short contracts. Tobacco was feverish throughout and after breaking from 81 to 8174 rallied to 84Vt. In the last half hour of busi ness the market developed weakness on vague rumors from Washington that the president tomorrow would send a message to congress approving the Cuban resolutions. The engagement of $500,000 gold for shipment to Europe tomorrow and the talk of additional exports on Saturday led to a general though moderate selling' movement. Prices fell 4 to 2 per cent. Sugar, Manhattan. Louisville and Nashville and the Grangers being particularly weak at this time. About 500 shares of Burlington and Qulncy, General Electric and Western Union were sold out for the account ot Julius A. Kohn, who, it was said, wa In financial dif ficulties. Speculation closed weak. Net changes show losses of al per cent. Tobacco, General Electric and Man hattan gained lalT4 per cent. Furnished by WILLIAM LINN, AL LKN A Co., correspondents for A. P.
