the work of Professors tiifnpsnn and

fourth place, the moral preparation for
Methodism an I the loose living of the
clergy of the Church of Knpland. The
' next point wna the state of rellRion s

lastly he turned to the brighter side
and spoke of the instances of saintli

ncr presided and ir.t -odiiced as the
f rst speaker Uev. Leonard C. Murdoch,
who spoke on "The Relation of Fence
to Periiumencv." The address was
rather brief, but was interesting und
contained nuiny pointed truths.
He was followed by i'l-v. Curtis I-..
Miiku, of Wllkrs-Unrre. whose subject
was Til- Nation's IVnian.l in Promot

will unite on a common inter
est ami nothing Is more needful than a
center- of moral religious life. Tilts
need "th" church supplies. The hoard
of church extension plunts churches
where the people nre too poor to rats"

place of worship which usually be
comes a strong. self-suppot ting
church and contributes money for the
nid of other poor churches as well as
for missions and the general benevo

The speaker i hatiictorb'd these
churches as training schools, for Itn

LEV. MANLKY HAP.1VS ADDllKPS.
"That which 1ms consumed enough of
energy anil thought to take on lie
Uorni of an Idea will forntula'e Itself
into some methods so that it may per
fect its inllwnre. A barn in a near
city was so costly and elaborate thru
It remains the monument of the man
who reared It. Ills father did better.
In the same city he put a college for
women. "HIH" Nye, under contract,
wrote yards of funny things every
week nnd yet hill projected Ills influ
ence soli ly by his droll, quaint wit.
Now and then influence is projected,
that on the one side Is str.ing, sincere,
Incisive, yet on the other Is base, un-
wrrthy, belittling and Impious. .Vr.
Parnell was the gr.nt Under of home
rule; yet lie luoke down a home with
his treacherous ways. Daniel Wolt"i
has no per In Int' i-peratlng constitu
tional law. yet he got much of his In
spiration from the glass before liini,
"Uambetta was the brilliant French
statesman, yet was a reputed duelist.
Others huve projected pure and worthy
Intlueucts. Joseph, under his teni tu
tlcns; Lut hi r. at t lie c hurch council
that condemned him; Paul on the way
to prison, said he, had fought a good
tight. The doctor also said that there
must lie a country before there coild
be lasting inlluen"os projected by tin
church. To formulate It Crant never
blundered into Itichninnd: Sherman
was no straggler, when he left Atlanta
to find tile sea: Sheridan nnd She'inn
doah have u history. Jesus must needs
love a body to die for men. So the
church is to save mm. and P must
needs take on form. Society has such
estimate and hieh value of the worth
of a church building that men will
not live lung uway from its influence.
The ";ll Methodist churches doubtless
strongly aided In formulating the sober,
temperance sentiment of Kansas. Yet
the board of church extension has aid
ed nil but fifty-two of them. The lu
' lluence of men ure projected by their
friends. Within sixty days a gentle
man and lady in this city gave to
ward building' nnd naming a church in
Montana in memory of their daughter.
"A community will not long hold to
gether that docs not localize Its In
fluence around some church building.
This conference has given the board of
church extension from lite beginning
R2S,""7. It hits received by donations
t."),8'iQ. and by loans. S.l.To'1. lit is asked
to give this year $ii,(mn, which would
be hut 1:1. cents per member. Should
It raise this much $1,200 may be ex
pended upon this teititory by the hoard
during the year. There are sixty-eight
of the 2i!) charges that give $m or more
for church ixtenslon. Sixteen charges
rive, nothing. If-the churches arei In
formed they seldom fail to respond."
