Historic names are associated with our
rololiml Iron Industry. Mordecat l.ineolu
of Scituate. Mas,., from whom Abraham
I Lincoln was directly decendt-d. was t tie
principal owner as carl., as in com
pany with hi, btother, Daniel L.ncolu.or the
iiouitd Brook iron works. Auauscn Wash
ington, was engaged In the manufacture
or pig Iron at Accokeek Furnace, in Staf
ford county, Virginia, at the time Ueoie
Washington was boru. His iron interests
were continued In the Washington fam
ily down to the revolution. .
The great progress '.hat has been made
In. late years in this country In the con
struction of steel bridges and In the sub
stitution or iron and steel lor wood In the
erection of public and private buildings,
particularly the very high buildings thai
are now to be seen In all our large cities,
could not have taken place If our Iron
and steel manufacturer, had not first dem
onstrated their ability to produco the
structural forms required and at low
prices.
The manufacture of wire ropp Is another
leading branch of our steel-wire Industry
and so ulso has been the manufacture of
telegraph and .telephone wire. Electric
railways, too. reuulre large quantities of
stacl wire. We did not make the steel
fur these articles until after lsOO. The
wire cables for the Brooklyn bridge,
which was completed in 1883, were made of
American steel.
It may be doubted whether many per
sons realize the magnitude of the steel
wire Industry of this country. The 5,081,
801 kegs of wire nulls manufactured In 18t
were the equivalent of 253.ti52 tons. Al
most as many tons of steel wire for fenc
ing are also annually produced.
Several signers of the declaration were
colonial Iron manufacturers, as were also
two of the most notable officer of the
continental army. Oenerul Nathaniel
Greene and Colonel Ethan Allen. In 1742
Benjamin Franklin Invented the Frank
lin stove, which Is still In use in some old
Pennsylvania houses.
Ten years ago the making: of heavy
armor plates wua an untried Industry In
this country but today our heavy armor
plates are admitted to be the best In the
world and within the. last year the Rus
sian government has purchased American
armor plates In preference to those made
In European establishments.
It was not until' near the eml of the
first quarter of the present century that
we made any considerable quantity of
nails with the cul-iiall machines with
whlcn the present generation is familiar
Until 1833 all our cut nulls were made of
Iron but In that year we began to make
them of bessemer steel und in the same
year steel-wire nails began to come into
use as a substitute for cut nails.
Then Baby was sick, we gave her Caatoria.
Alien she was a Child, she cried for Castorla.
When she became Misa, she clung to Castorla,
Wheu she bad Cbildreu, she fare them Castorla.
