All Delaware nnd Hudson mines In
the vicinity of Carbondale have been
put on half time. Owing to the un
seasonable weather, there Is little de
mand for coal and as the production
continues to be very large the stock on
hand is rapidly accumulating nnd there
is trouble to store It. The Delaware
nnd Hudson hus about two hundred
thousand tons stored on the Honesdale
docks. This order is nlso a result of
the meeting of the coal companies'
presidents which was held in New
York lust week when it was deemed
ndvlsnble to restrict the tonnage of the
various companies.
An anthracite coal trade authority
Interviewed Saturday by the Philadel
phia Stockholder's New Vol k corre
spondent with reference to the action
of the presidents 011 Thursday last,
stated: "I have no doubt whatever
that the anthracite carriers have at
last come to an agreement which will
remain in force. The peculiar thing
ubout the agreement Is that nobodv is
entirely satisfied with It, which, to'my
mind. Is pretty clear evidence lliitt the
settlement Is the fairest that could be
made. Xo one seems to have obtuilied
any advuntuge over anybody else,
and the committee is to lie congratu
lated 011 having arrived t a solution
which sntislles nobody, because that
Is the next best thing to the Ideal, but
impossible, solution which satisfies
everybody."
The Engineering anil Mining Journal
is not decided in its own mind as to
whether it likes the new presidents'
agreement or not. It cautiously savs:
"The anthracite trade is once more on
a basis by which the companies may
prevent low prices, provided they carry
out their agreement. And when a
tlnnl plan of operation Is decided upon
they will be more closely joined than
for many years. Whether history will
fail to repeat itself ere the current
year is over und this new pool goes to
pieces remains yet to be seen."
