Company A Is an organisation not long
formed, but it Is in flourishing condition
and has a membership of the prominent
and active young men of the South Side.

The fair which closed Saturday night
and had been running: since the holidays
under the auspices of the congregation of
St. Mary's German Catholic congregation,
netted over $2.KW, which is a very sattsrac.
tory sum In view of the business depres
sion on the South Side, owing to the sus
pension of work at the steel mills. Tho
exact amount clenred Is not known, be
cause there ure some outstanding ac
counts yet to be heard from, which are
only small matters; but the proceeds are
a little over the sum named. For the suc
cessful ending or the fair the greater part
of the credit Is due Rev. P. C. Christ, the
pastor, whose untiring labor ond guid
ance served to bring about the result. Rev.
Father Christ Is duly grateful and ho has
communicated his thanks lo all who in
any way contributed to help along the
fair. The money will go into the church
fund.
Death of Mrs. Charlntto Proffer.
At un early hour yesterday morning, nr
ter a sudden Illness of heart failure, Mrs.
Charlotte PfetTer, aged 7(j years, pussed
to her eternal reward. Her husband, who
died a few years ugo, was the tlrst hard
ware merchant on the South Side, They
were among the tlrst settlers here nnd dur
ing Ihelr long life, husband and wife made
friends without number. The funeral will
be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock
from the late residence, MA Cedar avenue.
Sendees will be conducted at the Hickory
Street German Presbyterian church by
the pastor, l!ev. William A. Nordt. and
Interment will be made In Plttston Ave
nue cemetery.
Slight Blare on Cedar Avcnuo.
At noon yesterday an nlnrm of fire was
sent In from box Kl at Cedar avenue and
Elm street on account of a slight blaze In
the residence of Philip Schroener, of Kirst
court. The lire started In the kitchen ac
cldentally and id not amount to much. It
was eusily extinguished und did only a
small nmount of damage. The Neptune,
Century and William Connell companies
responded promptly.

ing organization has just been created
In Canton, known ns the Bachelor
Maids. They expect to meet at regular
Intervals to sew for Infants of the de
serving poor. An elaborate cpnstltu
llon nnd by-laws has been adopted. One
of the rules requires that each victim to
lipid shall give a dinner to the surviv
ing bachelors. . ; ,- '
Officers have been chosen for life, or
until such time as marriage renders
them Ineligible to membership, and In
order to Increase tlie chances of passing
the offlclul honors around, they are dis
tributed among the oldest members,
FORTUNE TELLERS IN JAIL.
May Be Fined, Imprisoned, Pilloried and
Whipped in Delaware.
Wilmington, Del., Jan. 27. Three for
tune tellers. Dr. Richard Wallace,
Warren Veno and. William' Brown,
were arrested here this afternoon on a
hurge of swindling. They conducted
for several weeks a fortune telling es
tablishment In the residence portion of
the city, and did a bis; business.
Their charge was $2 for a single read
ing, and among: tho patrons were some
wealthy and highly respected people.
The penalty for their offense In this
stttte Is $500 fine, one year imprison
ment, one hour at the pillory and a turn
at the whipping post.

Crawfordsvllle, Ind., Jan. 27. -Pretty
Grace MnClamock, the 15-year-old
daughter of Lemuel McClamock, a
well-to-do farmer, died last night in
terrible agony, and It is alleged that
Philip Hauk, an admirer, and Dr. J. 8.
Stout are responsible for her untimely
taking off.
A posse of excited farmers In the Mc
Clamock nelsrhborhood came here to
day vowing vengeance, but Hauk had
surrendered himself and had been re
moved to the Covington Jail. He Is a
school teacher and the girl was one of
his pupils. .

The evidence showed that on or
about Jan. 14 the two accused men
passed thirteen counterfeit bills on
residents of Plttston. In their case
thirteen proved an unlucky number for

an expectancy of a long term of Im
prisonment In the Western peniten
tiary. The witnesses examined at the hearing

dress where the secret service ollicers
arrested a number of counterfeiters

Death Discloses a Case of lllgomy at
Coalhurg. Ala.
Brazil, Ind., Jan. 27. A sensation was
sprung here today by the announce
ment made by the attorneys of widow
No. 1 of Thomas Young, who was killed
a few weeks ago by an explosion at
Coulburg, Ala., that she was preparing
to bring suit to prevent the various
Insurance companies from paying poli
cies exceeding $14,000 tn widow No. 2.
Young hud resided in this city for n
number of years prior to moving to
Alabama and was highly respected. and
not one even dreamed of liltn being a
bigamist.
The wotnun bringing suit lives nt
Ward, Colo. She snys that Young took
her to Kiigliind and abandoned her
twenty years ago, shortly afterward
returning to this country and marry
ing wife No. 2.

Section I. Be It ordained by the Select
and Common Councils of the City of
Scranton, and It is hereby orduined by the
authority of the same, That for the pur
pose of constructing a viaduct upon the
noutherly side of and contiguous to West
Luckawanna Avenue, from Seventh Street
to Ninth Street, in the Fourteenth Ward,
ind ror the payment or cumpensation ror
property to b taken, Injured or destroyed
thereby, an increase of the City Debt, by
issue of City Bonds In the amount of One
Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollurs, is
hereby authorized, subject, nevertheless
to the consent of the electors of the CI 9
of Scranton aa herein provided.
Section il. The question of assenting ta
the above proposed Increase of the City
Debt shall be submitted to a vote of tti
electors of the City of Scranton at trs
auxt ensuing geuural election occurring
not less than thirty days alter the pas--axe
or this ordinance.
Section S. After the passage of this or
dinance, and at least thirty davs before
said election, the Mayor shall publish a
lotlce of the election hereby authorized tn
ihree dally newspapers of the Clly, and
the ststement required to be published In
uch notice shall be furnished by the City
'oiuroller.
