Workmen Were Compelled to Leave
the Workings Thursday.
NOW PRACTICALLY DESERTED

The Bellevue mine suffered a cave-in
Thursday night, which may cause the
shutting down of the colliery. About
one week ago ominous sounds were
heard by the miners; the rib was
"shooting," a term used In the mines for
the pressure of coal on the side of the
mine causing pieces of coal to shoot out
with a noise like the report of a gun.
No attention was paid to the warning-
until Thursday morning, when a
fail of roof at the foot of the Bellevue
slope caused an investigation. It was
found that an extensive settling was
In progress.
After the seven enr loads of rock
which fell at the foot of the slope, had
been cleared away the miners were or
dered out of the mine. By this timr
the rumbling sound of the falling rock
showed that the workmen were In em
inent danger, and they started for the
surface. Some left hats, mining tools,
and dinner palls behind in the flight.
This was Thursday morning.
Since that time the mine has beer
practically deserted, save for the met
sent down to Investigate and watch the
progress of the fall.
Every vein in the mine Is affected,
though the two lowest, the Clark anc
the Big vein, have suffered the mos
damage from tho fall. The affected
places In the mine are, fortunately, oh
workings, though the places In actlv
use have also suTTered. The damagr
cannot be computed at the present
time. The main fall occurred Thurs
day night when hundreds of tons of
coal nnd rod: fell In every vein. Thom
as D. Davis, assistant Inside foremat
of the Delaware, Lackawanna and
Western company, told a Tribune re
porter last evening that the settling it
only temporary. He Bald that thr
mines will be worked Monday, and tha'
the damage will not be very great.
Outside the area of the settling ex
tends from Meridian street to Elghtl
street, and from Luzerne to Hamptor
streets. This is the same region whlcl
suffered from the fall of two years ago
Large fissures have opened on Luzernr
street in the vicinity of "Kelley'f
Patch." Several of the dwelling house
In the vicinity have dropped severa'
feet.
