the day advanced, however, the market
Imnroved on reports that there would
be no gold exports on Saturday after
all. The whole list movea up anywnere

from abroad were of a cheerful nature
and this stimulated the bullish feeling

and unfavorable rumors kept the stock
feverish all day. In the afternoon Man

Speculation left off weak with the ac

RAILROAD NOTES.
The Lehigh Valley proposes to provide
living apartments for Its station agents
in their respective stations where they
are Isolated from the town.
II II II
By the act of May, 1871, a legal ton
of anthracite coal is declared to be 2,240
pounds, and any coal dealer who sells
any less amount for a ton Is rendered
liable to a fine of $50. The last legisla
ture re-enacted this law with a little
variation in language, and the Coal Ex
change of Philadelphia has undertaken
to enforce it. This Is a matter which
ougni to receive general attention.
II II II
The Reading situation Is said to be
clouded somewhat at present by the de
termined effort of Philadelphia Inter
ests to prevent control of the property
passing to New York. If it were not
for this effort the plan of reorganization
would have been issued before this. The
New lork Interests are stated to be
thoroughly in accord as to reorganiza
tion, but make a condition of carrying
it through mat control shall be held
there. Until some agreement can be
reached on this point it Is considered
likely that a plan of reorganization will
not be promulgated until next spring.
II II II
J. W. Lattig, superintendent of elec
trical appliances on the Lehigh Valley
railroad, and H. A. Wilson, the mana
ger of the Hall Signal company, were
at the Mauch Chunk station on Satur
day. The company will shortly begin
the extension of the Hall Automatic
Block System along Its entire line from
Easton to Coxton. That portion of the
line on which the system is now in op
eration Is giving excellent satisfaction.
Not a collision has occurred between
East Mauch Chunk and Penn Haven
since the signals were put up one and a
half years agq.whereas previously there
used to be two and three a week some
times more.
NEWS OF OUR INDUSTRIES.
The report of the Reading's coal ton
nage for the week ended Saturday
shows total shipments of 320,605 tons,
an Increase over the same week last
year of J4.070 tons. For the fiscal year
to date the tonnage has aggregated 12,
735.314 tons, against 11,551,176 tons last
year, ah Increase of 1,184,138 tons.
A scarcity of bituminous coal is re
ported from nearly all the districts,
with a strong advance market.
President Harris, of the Reading, will
be re-elected. Sufficient proxies have
already been received to assure that.
THE GROWTH OF LUXURY.
Some Comparisons as to tha Progress
Which Americans Aro Making.
From Harper's' Weekly.
New York still leads the vulgar race
with the most costly art gallery bar
room, but the other cities boast what
their saloon habitues would call "close
seconds." Buffalo has such a palace.
and whereas New York has long had a
bar-room with sliver doliarsset Into the
floor, Chicago led with the Idea, and
has Ave times as many dollars in the
floor of the greatest and finest barber
shop in Christendom. And Denver
prides Itself upon a saloon whose floor
is studded with $20 gold coins.
There is no candy and soda water
shop in America to equal one in Chica
go, whose walls are coated with looking-glass
cut to gleam like jewels. We
pride ourselves upQn our railroad depot,
but Philadelphia has two fine ones the
Pennsylvania and the Reading and St.
Louis' Union depot and the Illinois
Central railway uepot In Chicago are
splendid stations. San Francisco has
swimming baths that no other city pa
rallels, and that city and New Orleans
and Galveston have refreshing water

the like of which the people of other
cities are put to trouble, expense and
travel to get at Chicago has a jewelry

Do you know Mr. J. S. Bodder, of 214
South Main street? He has been a
business man and permanent resident
of Elmlra for over twenty years. A
man whose statement cannot be dis
puted. Well, Mr. Bodder's case In a
nutshell Is that he has been a sufferer
from kidney disorders, but doesn't suf

what has brought about the change.
Here Is how he spoke of his case to our
representative: "I have never been
well since the closing of the war, where,
In the service of my country, I con
tracted kidney and bladder disorders.
The complaint has gradually been
growing on. me. I had sharp pains
In the small of my back, Just
back of the hips, and .when they left It
was only to be followed by a dull, heavy
pain which remained continually. I
could He In but one or two positions in
bed or the .pain would be almost un
bearable. I waa always very sore
over the kidneys, and the urine emitted
a strong odor. At times I felt exist
ence a task. I tried this, that and the
other thing, to no avail, and was on the
verge of flvinr up entirely when I saw
Doan's Kidney Pills advertised. I
thought a a last resort I would give
them a trial; they were highly recom
mended, and I would use Just this one
more remedy. I began taking them,
and I am very glad Indeed t give my
statement, that suffering humanity may
receive the same beneflt I have, A few
doses of Doan's Kidney Pills satisfied
me they iwere helping me. Now the
pain Is all gone, and I am entirely well
this, after year of sickness. My

Sky Scrapers Now Numerous.
Many cities now. display tall build

scrapers," as the firemen call them
are In the only cities In which there are
need and excuse for them. Those cities
are New York and Chicago, In both of
which, for different reasons, the busi

club houses of the country, there are
none of the conventional types here or
In London that are of a higher grade

Chicago Athletic and the Union league.
There are few clubs In cities of the

New Orleans. The Jewish club of

Do you doubt that hundreds of such eases

our word for it They have, in nearly every
instance, been so pronounced by the best

who have no interest whatever in mis,

strongly prejudiced and advised against
a trial of "Golden Medical Discovery,"
but who have been forced to confess that
it surpasses, in curative power over this
fatal malady, all other medicines with
which they are acquainted. Nasty cod
