SLANG IN SUPREME COURT.
Assistant Attorney Goaoral Whitney Not
Choice in His English.
Washington, Nov. 6. Just before the
Buprcme court of the United States ad
journed it tacitly gave its sanction to
a popular piece of slang that may be
said, therefore, to have acquired olliclul
place in the vernacular. Assistant At
torney General Whitney was arguing,
and in the course of his'remarks alluded
to the nature of his adversary's argu
ment theso words: "My learned op
ponent, like a great many other gentle
men who have appeared here, has been
'talking through his hat.'" Though
almost every one present was shocked
and expecifd to hear a reprimand Im
mediately from the bench, not a single
justice seemed to have noticed the re
mark, and therefore Mr. Whitney es
caped: Justice Gray rebuked the attorney
general himself Inst week for a much
lighter offense. The attorney general
had alluded to a chart, which he held
before the court, as a "bird's eye view."
Justice Gray took It upon himself to
maintain the dignity of the bench by
remarking: ''But Mr. Attorney Gen
eral, we are not birds." The dignity
of the august body was seriously dis
turbed by .the spectators giggling, and
even some of the lawyers, but not a
single Justice smiled.

Chattanooea.Tenn..Nov.5.The prison
committee appointed by theGeorgla leg

the lease system in her convict camps
has Just completed their labors. They re
port the prisoners as poorly guarded,
wretchedly fea. and clothed, and tbe
sanitary condition of the place as abom-

They allege that a more niggardly
course in the keeping of the convicts
could not be pursued by the lessees.
were they utter bankrupts, uneir re

Dissatisfaction with the lease system
Is spreading. Influenced partly, per
haps, by Tennessee's example in work
ing her own prisoners, but more by the
fact that Georgia ts selling tue hire of
her 3,000 criminals for 115.000, a mere
