THE WORLD OF BUSINESS
STOCKS AND BONDS.
(Net York. Oct. 23. The stock mar
ket was weak and lower today and the
bear leaders were more active than for
weeks past. The Inherent strength of
the sterling exchange market Is cre
ating talk about gold exports and this
plays directly into the hands of the
bears on stocks. The Rreatest pres
sure to ell was against Manhattan and
Sugar. The former fell from 1084 to
10714 and the latter from 107 to 1054.
The cotton carrying roads were
adversely influenced by the short
crops which it Is said will make
serious inroads on the earnings
of these companies. The other
prominent railway Issues declined
4 to per cent. The anthracite
coalers were neglected notwithstand
ing the advance in coal and the higher
prices for. tlie product. The Granger
ran off about a half point, the con
tinued drougrht in the winter wheat
fceft being used against these shares.
The market closed weak owing to the
drop In Sugar. 'Xet changes show
losces of a per cent.. Sugar and

The D L. A W. Announces an Inerenso in
the Freight Chnrcca.
The Delaware. Lackawanna and
Western Railroad com;:iny lias Just
sent out natures to Its shippers of an
thracite coal that there will be an ad
vance on this kliul of freight on. and
after Nov. 1. This circular applies to
coal from thettnlnes to tidewater points
at New York and to Ruffalo. For some
time such a circular has been looked
for, and during the last month ft was
Intimated that such a move would bj
made by all the railroad companies
that did a "oal business. It appears,
however, that most of the companies,
while agreeing that the freight raites
on coal were too low, were reluctant
to take the step, and It was put off from
time to'flme. It appears that the same
arrangement Ire was carried out In re
gard to the advance in the price of
coal Is to be put Into effect in regard to
putting; up the freight rates on this
commodity. That Is, one company is
to take the Initiative and the others
will soon follow. The new anthra
cite freight rates which the Delaware.
Lackawanna and Western Railroad
company will put Into effect on Nov. 1
are as follows:
Destination. New Rate. Old Rate.
BufTalo 12 W 11.75
Syracuse 1.90 l-'
Hoboken 1.45 1.25
The Lehigh Valley Railroad company,
which is a competitor of the Delaware.
Lackawanna and Western, has not
made any change In' Its anthracite
freight rates, but It Is'understood that
It will 'hold a conference with the Read
ing company, and In all probability will
meet the new rates of the Delaware,
Lackawanna and Western Railroad
company. The I-hlgh Valley rate to
Buffalo la $1.75, to Syracuse. 11.60. and
to Perth Amboy, which Is considered
the same as Hoboken, there Is a dif
ference owing to a variety of elzes
of coal. On stove, egg, chestnut and
broken sizes the freight rate to this
port Is $1.50, on pea, $1.40. and on buck
wheat. $1.33. Pince the Improvement In
the coal trade there has been no change
made In anthracite freight rates, and
now that a start has been made It Is
thought that these rates will be ad
vanced all around. 'Philadelphia Press.

Great Britain evtry year.
An air line train while going nearly
fifty miles an hour, struck a little
girl near Northford. Conn., last week.
Vhen the train pulled back the en
gineer found that the girl, whom he
had seen thrown In the air. was able to
walk around, apparently uninjured.
The Pennsylvania railroad's coal
shipments (lines east of Pittsburg and
Erie) for the year up to Oct. 12 were
In round numbers 5.000,000 tons In ex
cess of the shipments for the corre
sponding period las'! year.
Vice President Hall, of the New
York. New Haven and Hartford, whose
opinion J Is worth considering, says:
"The economy of the electric system,
together with the tremendous Increase
of patronage that Is attracted, recom
mends electricity to all the rallroaus
of the country, especially those with
heavy suburban traffic, and such
roads as the New York Central, the
Haltimore and Ohio, he Pennsylvania,
the Illinois Central, the Chicago and
Northern Pacific have either placed
contracts Tor the operation of various
branches by electrlcty or are about to
do so."
An English paper speaks In flatter
ing terms o English railways because
they "do not raise their freights In
winter, as they do In some foreign
countries." Even on the Oreat East
ern, the cheapest of the lines Into Lon
don. It costs more to send a ton of
wheat Iflto the metropolis from Norfolk
(100 miles) than It does from New York.
N. E. Weeks, secre'tary of the New
England Passenger association, has
submitted to the other passenger asso
ciations a plan for handling tickets
sold at reduced rates' for meetings, so
as to do away with joint agencies, lie

approval. " -

poisonous germs which enter the system.
Just so surely i the liver regulates the
system, so do Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets
regulate the liver. ' Keep this in liiind, and
you solve the problem of good health end
good living. The " Pleasant Pellets " have
a tonic, strengthening; effect upon the lin

which effectually cures Biliousness, Sick
Headache, Costiveness, or Constipation,
Indigestion, Loss of Appetite, Bad Taste
in Mouth, Sour Risings from Stomach,
and will often cure Dyspepsia. The " Pel

tracts are refilled and concentrated. Easy
inaction, no griping as with old-fashioned
pills. As a "dinner pill," to promote di
gestion, take one each day after dinner.
To relieve the distress, arising from over
eating, nothing eauals one of these little

Troubles and How to
Cure Them.
'Brlght's Disease has no symptoms.
That is, of course, it has some symp
toms, but they are so common that
everybody suffers trom them more or
less.
And yet we have not all got Brlght's
Disease.
We nearly all have headaches. Head
aches are a sign of ltfitfht's Disease,
Nervousness, Thirst.' Hut Skin, Losa of
Flesh; these are other symptoms.
Who would supiose he was danger
ously sick when he simply had these
symptoms? ,
Yet Bright's Disease often nas hard
ly any others, outwardly, and Is still
one of the diseases most dreaded of
physicians.
If It is allowed to run on too long it
Is incurable. 'Kvea in ilie beginning,
ordinary drugs e.re often unabh; to help
It.
Iltut Dr. Hobb'n Sparagua Kidney
Tills will cure all cases of Brieht's Dis
ease If taken before the kidneys are sa
worn out that renewing them Is Impos

Most sicknesses are caused by the
kidneys, because It Is the kidneys
which are supposed to keep the blood
pure.
When the -blood Is impure, it causes
just the same symptoms as mentioned
above for Hrlght's Disease.
If, when we are sick, we would lake
Dr. .'Hcbb's Sparagus Kidney Pills, we
would cure Hrlsht's Disease If we had
it, and In any case we would) purify
our blood and relieve the symptoms
which made us feel sick.
Ulobh's Fparagus Kidney Pills are
made from the roots and stalks of tho
Asparagus Plant under a special pro
cess. Tiiey have a tonic and healing effect
upon the kidneys. They repair the ef
fects of overwork, worry, excesses, etc.
They strengthen and nourish the or
gans and give them new vltullty.
Kidney troubles caused by wounds
or bruises can be- cured with lr.
liobb's Sparagus Kidney Pills.
The kidneys filter our blood. They
keep It pure and free from poisonous
mutter.
When our blood Is Impure we suffer
from Brlght's Disease, Diabetes and
oth'-r kidney diseases, and from Rheu
matism, K.lou't, 'Airuemla, and other
1-1 1 nl diseases.
The cure would be to take 'Dr. Hobb'a
