BURNED TO DEATU.

Yesterday mornlns between 7 and 8
o'clock, Robert. 6-year-old son of Ho
mer Williams, was so badly burned
that he died about noon. i
The child and his two sisters, aged U
and 13. were alone In the house. By
some means he had Rotten a box f
cigarettes. It Is said, from a young; lady
living close bv. When he ottenuted to
light a ciitarette the whole box of
matches he had became Ignited and
theee set lire to his clothing. Uefore
assistance arrived 'he was frightfully
burned about the face and body, ih
was carried Immediately to the home
of Mr. ami Mrs, Butler. 13UIalt street.
Pr. Stewart Was pummoned. but the
boy was beyond medical aid. Toward
the last ho sunk Into a comatose state
and did not M to suffer much pain.
He tvsked his father to give him a drink
of water, ami Miling his arms sunk
Into the sletp from which he never
awoke. This easa M made more sad
from the fact that the child's mother Is
now at the hosrital. where che went to
have an operation performed. She was
inoyresfslns nicely, but this shock may
have a disastrvuj effect.
The boy was a brieht little fellow nn.t
was an only son. The funeral will be
at and o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
Mary Williams, the boy's sister, had

The Wilkes-Barre Krieger society will
hold a parade. Oct. 2:1. at 7.30. to cele
brate the twenty-fifth anniversary of
the Franco-Prus3lan war. The follow
ing societies will turn out:

Republic: Military rank. Ancient Order
Knights of the Mystic Chain: S'ehutzen

they will return to the headquarters at

there will be a ball.

A Wife-Beater Sentenced.
Alderman Donohue yesterday morn
ing maintained his reputation for treat
ing wife beaters with severity. John
McOermott, of Plains, was before the
aldfrman on complaint of his wife, who
said he had asaulted her. Her appear
ance verified her words. '
Jier faoe was black from forehead to
chin, and so badly swollen that the eyes
could scarcfly be seen. JlcDermott
came home lat last night, and being
lrunk and In an ugly mood, abused his
wife as a matter of diversion. The
alderman committed him to Jail for six
months.

Samuel Clemena, a young eMtlzen of
I.userno borough, died ait the home of
Mrs. John Thomas yesterday morning,
eged 21 years. About a week ago he
contracted a severe cold which de
veloped mto pneumonia. He was born
In Luzerne borough, and was a mem
ber of Company B, Ninth regiment, and
Is highly spoken of by all his fellow
men.
Tihe funeral will be at the house to
day at 2 o'clock, with Interment at
Forty Fort, Rev. J. F. Williams of

Fire nt Port Griffith.
Yesterday morning about o'clock Are
tii-ike out In the Hoyt shaft of Port
Griffith, caused, it Is said, by the Ignit
ing of a pas feeder. The coal set on
fire Is In the lied Ash vein, and It grrw
so serious that the Plttston flre engines
were called In. Ily last night the flames
were under control.

daughter of 'Mr. and Mrs. Nace Os
borne, will take place this afternoon
at 3.80 o'clock. Interment will be made

last evening, after a few days' visit
with Mrs. C Drueffner.

People's day at the Methodist Hplscopal

will be rendered. Singing by the choir.
Kecitatlon. "The Old Man's Prayer";
recitation, "How to 'Live;" essay, "The

The evening session will consist of ser
mon, recitations and essays, suitable
for the occasion. The choir has pre
pared excellent selections, and an In
teresting programme will be carried

Rev. P. J. Golden, of WHllamsport,
was a caller In town on Thursday.
T'he Avoca Hose company, accom
panied by the Albion band, presented
a handsome appearance while on their
way to the Fireman's parade. In Pitts
ton, on Thursday. The hose cart, beau
tifully decorated, was drawn by W. H.
Hollister's beautiful white team.
The public schools closed yesterday
for one week, to enable the teachers
to attend county Institute. Appropriate
exercises were conducted in all the
schools In honor of the event.

Charles Robertson, who Is attending
Wyoming seminary. Is spending a few
days at the. homo of his parents, on

Chemical and Fertilizer works, of this
place. .
Stanley Dymond made a business trip
to Scranton yesterday.
The Moosic Knitting mills, a chart
ered organization, is locating in town

Main street. It will employ about forty
hands, principally girls.

visitor in town yesterday, he being
subpoenaed as a witness In the case of
Williams vs. Connell.
Mrs. John MUler was a visitor in
Scranton yesterday.
Abel Storms and wife are In Phila
delphia, Mrs. Storms bcrtng In one of
the hospitals, where he Is undergo
ing an operation.

The fireman's parade was formed
about 10 o'clock yesterday and elicited
much admiration as the fire laddies
marched through the principal streets.
The order of march -was as follows Po
lice on horseback, veterans, honorary
members and town council In carriages.
Honexdale "band, company officers,
steamer, firemen, company 'drawing
hose cart, uteamer and hose cart. On
of the steamers was drawn by four
black horses, making a fine appearance.
The hose coupling contest took place
on Third street, adjoining the park,
about 2 o'clock In' the afternoon. The
conditions of the contest were to run
200 feet and break, a coupling, tihen run
200 feet and make a coupling, then run
200 feet and screw on a nozzle; the first
contest, for which a gold medal had
been offered for first prize and silver
badge for second prise, was won by
Carroll brothers, time 44 seconds, Bry
ant and Buss, second, time B4 sec
onds; Sadler and Ball, third, r74 sec
onds. Second contest, two pair rubber
boots for prises, won by Carroll broth
ers, 60V4 seconds; Sadler and Keen, 03(6
seconds. '
A younflf man by the tiamn of Bates,
living a few miles above Honesdale,
was operated on by Dr. Hums, of Scran
ton,, for apendecttlS' yesterday. Tho
disease had advanced, to such a stage
that he Is In a very weak condition.
G. P. Bommers and wife .have re
turned home from their wedding trip.
