FOHCF. OF EXAMPLE.
"Like mistress, like maid." Is a saving
that Is probably oftener true than "like
master, like man. The story Is told that
Mile. Augustine Brohan, a celebrated
French commedlenne, who was extremely
humane to all animals, no mutter how
humble, one day, at table, found a lly
caught on .her "plate. She took It up ten
derly with her thumb and finger and called
her maid.
"Murle." she said, "take thlB fly he care
ful, now, don't hurt him! and put him out-
uoora.
The girl took the fly and went away, but
presently Madamolselle Brohan saw her
standing near with a troubled expression
01. her fnce.
"Well. Marie," she said, "did you do as
1 tout you v
"No, madamoiselle. I've got the fly still
I couldn't venture to put him outdoors It
was raining ana he might nave taken
cold!"
NEWS OF 01 R INDUSTRIES.
Happenings of Interest to the Staple
Trwlea anj Partieularly to the Trade
. la Iron, Steel and Anthracite Coal.
Notwithstanding the depression of
business, exports from the ' United
States In ISM were valued at $8S9.K43,
000 Against $S47,665.1!M in 1893. Three,
fourths of that vast value came from
the farms and farmers of this Republic.
Great Bittain and Ireland lead all the
other countries In volume of trade with
the United States. The English-speak
ing people f Europe bought of the
SS89.000.OtM of American exports $451.-
000,000 worth, and, taking the British
possessions all together as one cus
tomer, they took $523,000,000 worth, or
nearly 60 per cent, of the whole during
1S94. The United States Imported from
Great Britain $107,000,000 worth of her
products In 1S94, or 16.4 per cent, of
our entire Imports. And from all of
the British possessions, together with
the United Kingdom. $178,000,000 worth,
or more than 27 per cent.
The Philadelphia Stockholder piques
curiosity by saying: "It Is pretty ssfe
to say that this will be the last month
of August for many a lonx year to
come when coal will be selling In New
York harbor on a basis of $2.75 per ton
for stove, and even lower. People will
do well not to wait too long to fret In
their winter supplies of coal. It does
no seem possible that even under a
continuance of existing conditions coal
will go any lower. It Is lalso safe to say
that people may muke up their minds
that the anthracite stocks will not
much longer toe useful gambling count
ers on the street."
The great demand upon the Iron mills,
furnaces, foundries and steel works of
the country for their products still con
tinues. An authority on the Iron trade
says that the demand Is now hravr
than ever before known In the history
of the country. The same authority at
tributes the starting up of so many Idle
plants to the bis; boom in electric rail
road construction, which has be.n so
pronounced since the opening of p-prlnir.
It nlso says that the crop prospects are
full of encouragement to manufacturers
of iron and steel, the corn crop being
most bounteous.
The co I rate war still continues be
tween Chicago and Omaha, and the
ChlcaRo, Milwaukee nnd St. Paul road
is credited with carrying anthracite
coal to the 'Missouri river 'for $1.50 per
ton. The interests Involved, however,
are slight, as the entire shipments of
hard coal in a year's time .between the
two cities are said to bo only about
10.000 tons, so a cut of $1 per ton would
onlv cut Into the revenue $10,000.
The Rending, Pa.. Iron company Is
havlnir the Montour RoMnrr mills, at
DanvilK Pa., overhauled and repaired.
The mills have een Idle for several
months. When running full they will
g!ve employment to over 800 men.
After an Idlness of many months
there will soon be a resumption of work
at the rottsville (Pa.) Iron and Steel
comonny'8 plant. Thi works will jrlve
employment to aihout 600 hands ns soon
as they start up full.
July was a record-breaker at the
Homestead Steel works. The output
for the month was 43.0OO tons of fin
ished material, the 'largest In nny one
month In 'the history of the works.
The open hearth department cf tho
Pennsylvania Steel company, at Rtccl-
ton, for July made over 12,000 tons of
teel, being the largest monthly ton
nage In the history of the plant.
The Bethlehem Iron company will
erect two additional open hearth steel
furnace soon. This will make four
furnaces to be built this year.
Railroad Commissioner Perkins, of
Kansas, In a letter to a railroad official
In this city says the corn crop is the
best In twenty-five years.
The country Is producing1 plff Iron
at the rate of about 9,200.000 'tons a
year, -which Is close to the hlgrhest pro
duction ever reached.
