Republican County Chairman.
The candidates nominated at the Re
publican county convention will meet
today to select a chairman for the
coming campaign. iBob Robinson, who
has been chairman of the last three
rampalgnS, will not accept the olllce,
as the duties connected with It are
such as to keep him away from his
duties as deputy treasurer for several
months, and hesays he cannot afford It.
Prothonotary 'LleweVyn is spoken of
for the post.
W. J. Scott, Councilman Robert Will
lams and Oharies B. Keck are also men
tioned as likely persons to be chosen for
chairman at the Republican meeting to
flay. W. J. Scott Is a man that could lead
the party to victory with a rush. He is
known to nearly all Republicans, has
presided over several conventions, a
prominent Grand Army of the Republic
man and respected and honored
throughout the county. Tie Is the man
who should represent the Republican
party In the state senate after Sena
tor Kline's term expires, and the
Friends he could make as cihalrman

After many months' labor Hhe com'
mlssloners have at last completed the
valuation of 'the coal properties In Lu
zerne county. . Each vein and acreage
of the companies have been carefully
gone over by engineers for the county,
and are now as near correct as can pos
sibly be made. The assessment books
are ull out, and as this Is trl-anuuul as
sessment year, your taxes for the next
two years will be about the same as
they are for this one.
A Trolley Accident.
Michael Carlin, about 16 years old,
met with a serious accident on Sunday.
Carlin was returning from n base ball
game In Sugar iNotch and attempted to
board an electric car. He slipped1 In
some way under the rear truck and had
his right leg broken and several toes
cut off. The accident is a very unfor
tunate one, as he is the oldest eon of
his widowed mother and her main sup
port.
A lry Sundae.
The novelty of a dry Sunday was ex
perienced here. In some manner it was
made known to all saloon-keepers that
tde Law and Order society would have
men out to report any sale of beer on
Sunday and t he saloon-keepers took the
tip, for It was evident from the look
of disgust on the beer-drinkers' faces.

Reinert Gersbacher, a former coun
ty commissioner of Luzerne, died at his
home, at Clifton, Lackawanna county,
on Saturday.
Dr. o. T. Matlack has concluded ar
rangements for the purchase of the
property of the Murray estate, on
Northampton street, near Franklin.
The price paid was $12,000. Dr. Mat-
lack will build a handsome residence
and office on the site.
The engagement of Aurora Lynn,
daughter of E. B. Lynn, of this city,
and Thomas J. Tralnor. a salesman in
Simon Long's Sons', Is announced. The
marriage is to take place Sept. 4.

Little 9-year-old Harry Hllbert. son of
Mr. and Mrs. William J. Hllbert, of
William street, met with a serious acci
dent yesterday morning. He was rid
ing on a loaded wagon or tne Pennsyl
vania Coal company, driven by Jesse
Phillips. The horses gave a sudden
Jerk and tho boy lell between the
wheels. (Before the team could be
stopped the rear wheel of the loaded
wagon passed over the boy's body near
the abdomen and across one limb. He
is seriously Injured Internally, from
which there is faint hopes of his recov
ery. He also received a fractured limb
and dislocated hip. '

nix shaft, was badly injured by a pre
mature blast yesterday morning. He
was taken to the. hospital, where his In
juries were attended to.
Michael Reap, of Parsonage street,
received a brokfrnarm by falling from
a swing yesterday morning. He was

In referring to what we said a few
days since concerning Mr. 'Northrop as
a "boss," the Nicholson Examiner eays
"Boss Northrup knows very well, and
so does the writer of the above, that at

Mrs. Frederick Placeman, of Hun
more, who wad brought to the home of
her mother, M.rs. Elijah Harris. In
Lemon township, some six weeks since.
on account of her health, died at 4.15
o'clock Saturday morning. Her disease
was consumption, and ehe was nick
about two years. She leaves a husband
and two small children. The funeral
will occur at the Lemon Methodist
church at 2.30 p. m. today, with inter
ment In the Clark cemetery. Her fa
ther, who died a few years since, owned
one of the lairgest and best farms In
Wyoming county.

property of Forkstown township, and

George Miller and wife, of Lemon
township, wero brought before Justice
Kutz Friday night and put under bonds

on complaint if Stephen Wilsey, who
alleges that they assaulted and threat
ened to kill him.
The Republican county committee
met on Saturday and issued a call for
another county convention at the court
house on Monday, Aug. 19, at 1.30 p. m.,
"for the purpose of electing and in
structing a delegate to the Republican
state convention to be held at Harrls
burg on Wednesday, Aug. 28." The
reasons for the call are set forth in the
preamble as follows: "Owing to th

A wild storm burst over this section
at about 12.30 Sunday aifternoon, accom
panied by hail, wind and Incessant
thunder and lightning. The downpour
of rain was violent for about thirty
minutes and the lower portions of town
were soon flooded. Trees were twisted
and torn down, window glass broken
by the hall, but no material damage
Is reported, -except at bhe house of
James Stornler, a farmer living out In
tne township. Ills house was struck
by lightning and the chimney torn out.
