Philadelphia and New Tork papers can

SONS OF ST. GEORGE.
Second Day of the Convention lq Royal
Arcanum Hall.
. The session of the second day of the
Sons of St. Oeorge state convention
opened In the Royal Arcanum hall yes
terday morning with Grand President
House In the chair. Business was Im
mediately begun, and President House
appointed William Pooler, of St. Clair,
grand chaplain, and James Stevens, of
Washington. D. C, assistant mes
senger. In making the hitter selection.
President House Incidentally referred
to the growth of the order In the south,
and expressed it as his opinion that the
Interests of the order in that section
demanded a representation. The con
vention heartily approved the presi
dent's choice and complimented him
for his forethought.
The morning session was devoted
principally to 'the reports of commit
tees and action thereon. The treas
urer's report was comprehensive In de
tail and showed the financial condi
tion of the order to be entirely satis
factory. The wirk of the convention this after
noon was devoted to revising the rules
and the adoption of amendments. In
this respect, the convention, it is Under
stood, is making some radical changes,
but the delegates feel certain that
whatever la done will be of benefit to
tlie order In general.
Last evening the delegates to the con
v?nut!on went to Plttston. where a
Mnn.uet was tendered to them by Koy
imne Lodee No. 4. The convention will
probably finish tts'buslness and adjourn
tomorrow.

County Midical Men in Convention at
Dallas.
The IMedlcal society of Luzerne coun
ty held Its annual midsummer meeting
at mallas yesterday afternoon, and
those In attendance were:

The subject for discussion was "Sum
mer Diseases of Children," and it was
thoroughly discus.ed by a large num
ber of the physicians present. Or.
iMengel. of Parsons, and Dr. (McQueen,
of Plttston, made application for mem
herhlp, which were referred to the
proper authorities. Headquarters were
made at Raub's hotel, and the mem
bers all enjoyed, the meeting Immense
ly. Mr. Raub set out one of his fa
mous dinners, to which .the medicine
men did full justice.

Traction company and John Graham,

The suit was brought on promissory
notes and Judgment obtained on n debt
of $-8,896.90 with interest from Nov. 21,

Uailwny Men' .Meeting
The Pennsylvania Street Railway as
sociation will assemble In the city of
Wllkes-Barre In annuel session on the
4th and nth of Sept. The meetings
will be held In the Ninth regiment
armory, which has been engaged for the
occasion an! there will be from 100 to
i'tO present. General Manager John
Graham has the local arrangement In
charge and nothing will be left undone
to make It pleasant for the visitors. An
elabora te spread will be provided, and
a general entertainment and Jollifica
tion given at Hanover Park during
their stay. One thing handicaps Mr.
Graham In this, as It does Wllkes
Harre on many occasions, that Is the
lack of hotel accomodations, but he has
betn equal to the emergency, however,
and has arranged for the accommoda
tion of the visitors by the use of cots,

Hurt In the Mines.
John Matthew, a miner In the Avon-
dale colliery, had a leg broken yester
day morning by a fall of rock. He wag
removed at once to his home, on Sheri
dan street, this city, and made as com
fortable as possible.

struck by lightning at 5 o'clock Tues
day afternoon. Miss Williams Is In the
employ of Motorman Louis Reese, of
Kingston, and was walking In the yard
at the time she was struck. Mr. Reese
carried her into the house, and It was
about 8 o'clock when they brought her
to consciousness. The shock took effect
In the head and neck. She was re
ported aa being much better yesterday,
though her escape from death was very
narrow.

In prison were found 146 persons. Of
these 68 were- serving sentence, 87
awaiting trial and one awaiting exe
cution.

QUARREL OVER A CORPSE.

was removed to the hospital, where, on
Tuesday morning, he died, and that
night his remains were taken to his fa
ther's residence by his toroiner jam,
and preparations were made to hold
the funeral from that place.
Yesterday afternoon the wife of the

and asked If there were no means by
which she could get possession ot ner
husband's remains, as her father-in-law
in hm-a them taken from his
house. When closely questioned as to
the cause, she statea mat u was Be
cause Bhe was a Catholic and her hus
band a Protestant and that his family
were afraid that she would nave tne re
mains hurled In r Catholic cemetery
with Catholic services. She said she
had no such intention and if given pos
session of the remains would see that
they were burled In a Protestant ceme
tery with all the services of that faith.
The mayor will try to restore peace
among the members of the family.
A Xcw Club.
The Kingston cyclers met last Tues
day evening and organized a new club,
composed of West Side wheelmen. The
following officers were then chosen for
one year: President, W. P. Billings;
vice .president, N. D. Safford; treasurer,
advisory board, J. W. Marcy. Ray Fitz
gerald, O. W. Bennett, George W.
Lewis and James Hydman; captain,

Yesterday's Fire.
The fire yesterday afternoon was In
a shed covering one of the kilns In John
Schmidt's brick yard near the Jersey
Central tracks on Scott street. The
damage was very slight, although the
slitd was consumed before the fire was

Yesterday's excursion to (Harvey's
Lake was one of the best attended and
In re-eat of the year.
The Times had an exasperating ex
perience on Tuesday. The big shower
filled the boiler room and made the pa
ner an hour late.
The moonlight picnic of the West End
wheelmen, at Mountain park, on Friday
evening, will be one of the most enjoy
able affairs of the season.
Cornelius Robblns, of Kingston, died
at his home In that town yesterday af
ternoon aged 84 years.
The tax notices for the year have
been sent out. A rebate la allowed If
paid before Aug. 15.
The house of ex-County Detective Ml
chael Whalen, on llazle street, was
struck by lightning In Tuesday's storm,
but no one was (hurt.
It Is hoped that the town clock will be
fixed by the end of ' this week. The
works were too heavy to be sent away
and drawings of them had to be made.
miss May Gerson, the traveling agent
of the Behman Chemical company. Is

A large crowd will attend the twenty
sixth triennial conclave of Bhe Knights
Templar of the United States at Boston

A body of gas In the Pettebone mine
was fired by some workmen of the con
tractors a few days ago, but was ex
tinguished after a hard, battle.
William Lawrer, the jnan who Is sup
posed to have robbed the Plymouth
Knitting mill, 1s now In Jail, being held
by 'Squire Thomas for a further hear
ing. The will of Mrs. Mary Merrick, of this
city, probated yesterday, leaves her
property In equal shares to her Ave chil
dren. Frank Allen, of this city, was struck
by lightning while at work on Tuesday
and so badly shocked that It was some
hours before he regained consciousness.
The Lehigh and .Wllkes-Barre Coal
company will begin their monthly pay
days tomorrow at 2.30 at the Empire
shops.
Allan Colby Brooks, a graduate of
Jefferson Medical college, registered
as a practicing physician of this city,
yesterday.
Edward F. Rutty and Miss Cora E.
Sherwood were married last Tuesday

terson silk Industry that owing to labor
troubles and expenslveness of fuel they
are anxious to remove to this section.
They state that they will furnish em
ployment to from 300 to 400 persons. It
was referred to committee on manufac
turers. iM. Schlos-ser desired that a
committee be appointed to prepare a
petition and circulate It among the
property holders of West 'Plttston and
ask them to Join the city of Plttston in
one common government. Mr. Schlos-
ser's desire was put In form of a mo
tion and acted upon favorably. The
committee was requested to formulate
a plan and suggest a name for the new
city. The committee Is composed of

Frank Shlffer returned last evening
from a day's Ashing at Ransom. His
skill as a fisherman was shewn by one
of the finest collections of bass taken
this season. Though not very large,
they were of even weight and quite
numerous, .

Mrs. W. L. McDougail and family. Mrs.
J. McDougail. Mrs John B. Law and
daughter Jean have gone to Brlgantlne,
N. J., to spend a few weeks.
Miss Crawford, of Philadelphia, Is the

Benjamin Harding Is sick.
Miss Mary Bennett, of Spring street,
goes to Glenwood today to spend her
vacation with relatives.
The Misses May Powell and Belle
Fordham, of the West Side, will rusti

Nothing but Yellow Metal.
Topeka, Kan., Aug. 7.-Thls was pen
sion day, and checks for several hun
dred thousand dollars are being paid
out. The following circular was dis
tributed among the old soldiers of To
neka and Shawnee county this morning:
Comrades Halt. Yoni are entitled to
gold In payment of your checks. Demand
It. Do not accept depreciated currency.
The pensioners ar paid by checks,
which are cashed at the Topeka banks.
It Is claimed the circular was prepared
by a blmetalllst, who wants to show
that there Is not enough gold In the
banks to pay the pensioners alone,
aside from doing the other business of
the country. Over 500 pension checks
were paid by the Bank of Topeka
Only two applicants asked for gold
One was a customer and he was given
the yellow metal. The other was lnso
lent and was told to get out of the
bank.
Operators Will Hold Out.
Terre Haute, Ind., Aug. 7. The bitu
minous coal operators of the state held a
prolonged meeting hero last night. They
say that they will not coneedo the de
mand of the men for GO cents, but will hold
out for the 01 cents, until October, when
tho advance Is to be mudo.
