THE WORLD OF BUSINESS STOCKS AND BONDS. New York, May 10. The transactions In stocks today reached the enormous total of 689,000 shares, while the deal ings In bonds footed up nearly $6,000, 000. This is (the largest day's business in years. . The buying was of the beat charaoter, London and the commission houses being the largest purchasers. Trading for outside account was on a tremendous scale and in fact it was this buying; that defeated the efforts of the sold-out bulls to bring about re action. The offerings of the profession als were heavy and at times It looked as if the top notch had been reached but invariably freh buying orders were put in and the market resumed its upward course. The international stocks displayed the greatest strength, St. Paul, Louisville and Nashville, Atchison advancing rapidly. The coal ers, especially Reading and New Jer sey, were in demand. Near the close there was some good buying of Louisville and Nashville, St. Paul, Distillers and Reading, and in consequence the closing was strong. The range of toduy's prices for the nc tlve stocks of the New York stock mar ket aro given below. Tho quotations nro furnished Tho Tribune by O. du v. vim mlck, 412 Spruce street, Hcranton. A prominent olllclal of the Reading1 company, who is In position to speak with knowledge, confirms the recent re' ports that voting control of the prop. erty had passed Into .the hands of par ties In New York and London. It Is said In New York that a syndicate has been formed to secure control of the Reading company by purchasing a ma jority of the stock, and In this way take a hand In the settlement of the coal trouble. It Is said that the syndicate Is comiiosed of a number of prominent gentlemen who are connected In an olllclal way with the loading railroad anil coal companies. In this connection, however, It should be remembered that for the greater part of tho week under review the companies worked their collieries full capacity, ns the agreement to work three t'.itys a week only wont Into ef fect with the present week.
