The borough council held an inter esting meeting on Tuesday evening and transacted considerable business. President Lane presided and all the members, except Mr. Padden, were present. Mr. Klelnbauer, one of the committee apointed to confer with the TraaUon company relative to the open ditch on Dutch Hill, reported that the committee had gone to see the com pany as directed, but had not received any definite or satisfactory statement as to what the company intended to do. Privilege to address the council was then given to Mr. Duncan, who stated that the company had misunderstood the instructlons'of the road committee concerning the (covering of the ditch. He said the company was willing to do whait was fair in the matter and sug gested that a committee be appointed to meet him on Thursday morning to ill llVWV way wa thousands visit Eu rope for yearly, that is the natural Sprudel Saltof Carlsbad. After a short discussion, in which Cuunellmen Jones, Blake, Lane and Wagner par ticipated, the president appointed Bur gess Burke and Mr. Wagner a com mittee to confer with Mr. Duncan. Dr. Van Doren, of the board of health, presented his report for the ten months of the board's existence. The number of contagious diseases reported In that period was thirty-one, twenty nine being scarlet fever and two diph theria. The number of deaths reported was forty-seven, and of births eighty. Eighty burial permits were granted. Van Doren made many suggestfons which, if heeded, will make the sani tary condition of the borough even bet ter than It has been. Mr. Blake called attention to the need of crosswalks, and Mr. Jones asked that four arc electric lights be placed on the Ridge. No definite action was taken on the former suggestion. It was de cided that the light company should re port on the need of more lights or make suggestions as to changing some of those already fixed. Messrs. Behle, O'Boyle and Scanlon, of the board of trade, asked for permis sion to use the council rooms as a meeting place. It was granted. The bond of Treasurer E. F. Blake for $10, Ooo was approved and the secretary was directed to issue an order for $239.13 In favor of Collector Philben, that being the amount he overpaid his tax account for Orders were also ordered drawn In favor of the following: John Farrell, $36; Citizen, $28; Scranton Trib une $7; Crescent Eleotrlct company, two months, $3.".0; C. Klelnbauer, $2; S. Barrett, $1.50; P. McDonnell, $1; Mar tin Caffrey, $3; Michael tMcHale, , $15. There was some opposition to the bills of A. J. Duffy for $5.10 and Edward Lane for $6, expenses in connection with the injunction against the Carbondale Traction company several months ago. Councilmen Wagner, Gilmartln and Jones opposed payment because there was no resolution directing the council to ask for the Injunction. Mr. Lane claimed that himself and Mr. Duffy were summoned on behalf of the bor ough and claimed that it is only to the borough they can look for pay. The council sustained his view by a vote of 5 to 3 and the bills were ordered paid. DUNMOUK. Mrs. O. W. B. Allen Is dangerously ill at her home, on West Drinker street. Alney on Wednesday re garding the affairs of Company G, Thirteenth regiment, National Guard of Pennsylvania. Mr. Alney is ex ceedingly busy with matters pertain ing tdfcourt, as he Is district attorney, for Susquehanna county. Nevertheless he said: "Three years ago Company G was organized; those who then enlisted were unacquainted with military tac tics. Notwithstanding this disadvan tage the company has attained a very enviable place among the military com panies of the state, and has certainly assisted by fair share In sustaining the high standing of the Thirteenth regi ment. It would seem to me that this was the strongest test of endurance that could be made on the company. A number of enlistments expire May B, lSUfi, but twenty or thirty will hold over. It Is Impossible for me to Bay what the future luis for the company; but I see no reason why the young men and clti zins of this vicinity should not con tinue to give the company their warm est support. My resignation is a matter 'of business necessity, and not choice. I shall still retain my Interest and give the company my fullest support. I cannot feel that my resignation can In any way affect the future. The effi cient service of Lieutenants McCausland and Jessup In the past Is assurance for the fittuiv welfare of the company." William HuiiTlck and his brother Michael wear their hair like Jim Cor bett and they hall from Forest City. Last November, in company with two other brothers they attended a dance at I'niondale. For some unknown reason a feud exists between the two towns, and at 1,1 o'clock, while form ing: a set. the Bunllck quartette were knocked down and generally given a hot reception at the hands of the young men from T'niondule. The Unlondale men claim the Forest City bnys came there looking for trouble. The jury found Walter, William and Michael Burdlck guilty of ussault and battery, obstructing an olllcer and assaulting an officer. But Dell Burdlck, a youth who claims with the rest that he was "thrown down," was not convicted. The Burdicks have several trials on this term .of court, all emanating from the I'niondule "scrap." They are rep resented by Attorney L. P. Wedeman and John M. Kelly. All but Dell Bur dlck were sentenced to payi on one charge a fine of $5 and undergo two months' imprisonment In the county Jail. William and Michael on another count, were sentenced to pay $25 line. INDUSTRIAL NOTES. The Jersey Central dividend is payable May 1; books close April 15. Lake Shore ofllclals say they think they see evidences of continued improvement in general. Shipments of bituminous coal, it Is said, are being made from Baltimore to ports along the Paclllc coast. Last week the Pennsylvania Steel works at Steelton was one of unusual activity, viewed in the light of the business depres sion of the past two years. The output of bicycles in the United States this year is estimated at 400,i0, anil It may reach 450,000, which would be double the production of any previous year. The Pennsylvania railroad reports that the quantity of coal and coko originating on and carried over Its lines east of Pitts burg and Erie for the year thus far has been 5,454,714 tons, compared vllh 3.173, 1 17 tons In the corresponding period of lX'-M, an increase of 1,481,597 tons, of which 3,71. 021 tons were coal, an Increase of 834,S!5 tons, and 1,483,693 tons coke, an Increase of 64(j,702 tons. Dow-Jones' News Agency has this to say of the eoal situation: "It Is safe to say that Reading's demand for 21 per cent, of the tonnage, mode at Friday's meeting, wus the biggest surprise that has occurred at the formal meetings of the trade for sometime. It was the first occasion on which Keading has made any formal 'de mand' since there began to be talk outside of Its determination to do so. Its attitude, moreover, at previous meetings of the kind, hail always partaken largely of the 'peace at any price' nature, so that much Interest Is evidenced in the cause of Its sudden change of front In one week from being content with 20.U3 per cent, to de manding 21 per cent. We are told that the Interests which have always been In favor of an aggressive policy for Reading hdve lately been very active, and that Mr. Harris, who has hitherto acted as a pow. erf ul brake on these people, Is being pushed ahead more rapidly than he expect ed. We learn that John Lowbcr Welsh has lately given very close attention to Reading affairs, more so, in fact, than usual. It has been matter for comment in Philadelphia for a long time that Mr. Welsh, who cannot be Induced to dlscuns matters In which he Is not Interested, should latterly have shown an Interest In Reading even greater than could be ex plained by the mere fact of his being a re ceiver."
