Mrs. Greenwood Buried.
A large number attended the funeral
of the late Mrs. Henry Greenwood, who
died on Friday evening, from the fami
ly home on Xorth Garfield avenue at
3.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The
remains rested In a handsome black
casket, and previous to the funeral ser
.Vice were viewed by many close ac
quaintances. Rev. L. C. Floyd, pastor
of the Simpson Methodist Episcopal
-church, officiated and preached an im
pressive sermon commending the estim
able qualities and Christian character
of the deceased. The floral offerings
consisted of many boquets.; A party of
singers from.' he Simpson pholr ren
dered appropriate musical selections
under the leadership of Professor 'Will
lam W. Jones. Interment was made In
the Washburn Street cemetery. The
pall-bearers wre Harry Godshall, M.
G. Dlmmlck, Harry Shorts and John
Reese.

Watkins' new choir, held a quiet meet
ing yesterday afternoon in the parlors
of Falrohlld's hotel for the purpose of
discussing the problem of raising funds
to pay expenses for the choir's trip to
the Wilkes-Barre eisteddfod on June
12 and 13. ' It was at last decided that
subscriptions would be the wisest plan,
and the scheme will be operated' at
once.

MRS. RICHARDS' LECTURE.
Will Place a Handsome Sum In Finishing
and Furnishing Fund.
Last nijrht Mrs. M. T. Richards, of
Providence, R. I., who has delivered
a series of lectures on English litera
ture and litbllcal subjects, delivered an
extra lecture at the Young Men's Chris
tian association hall on "Moses, or the
Sojourn In the Desert," which was at
tended by the largest audience which
has listened to the admirable lectures
of this learned lady.
The life of Moses was reviewed In an
Interesting manner, and, in a brief
manner, a sketch was given of his four
books, and his career as a historian,
After an interval . Mrs. Richards re
cited "The Burial of Moses."
The lecture was given In aid of the
"Furnishing and Finishing Fund," of
the Young Men's Christian association,
and about $100 was handed to the asso
ciation officers by Mrs. Thomas Dick
son, who was Instrumental In arrang
ing the lecture and Insuring Its .success.
SOUTH SIDE TOUGHS.
They Made a Desperate Assault Upon tho
kellerman Family.
While the family of Mr. Klllerman
was- seated In conversation Sunday
niffht In their home, 627 Harris court, a
party of drunken marauders knocked
at the door and Imperatively demanded
admittance. The command was re
fused, whereupon the knocking at the
door was continued. Miss Klllerman
opened the door and received a blow in
the face. The men fled, but William
Hammon, who was- -present In the
house, captured George Wlnans. 21
years old, of Fig street. Miss Killer
man identified him as her assailant.
A policeman was called and WInans
locked up on a charge of assault and
battery and drunkenness. In yester
day's police court he pleaded guilty and
was sentenced to thirty days in Jail by
Alderman Fuller.

A meeting of St. Aloyslus society was
held last night at the hall In St. John's
church. ' "
A regular meeting of Columbus coun
cil. Young Men's Institute, was held

The Soifth "works were shut down
yesterday morning for one week, dur
ing which time the plant will undergo
extensive; repairs. '
The funeral of Mrs. Catherine
Wyandt, of Alder street, wasi held yes
terday afternoon. Funeral services
were held at the house and Interment
was made In Pisttston Avenue cemetery.
Michael -Kane, son of John Kane, of
MLnooka, was kicked In the -mouth by
a mule In the Greenwood mines yester
day aflterwxin. His front teeth, upper
and lower, were knocked out, and his
face otherwise badly disfigured.
A meeting of the school board of
Lackawanna township was held yes
terday afternoon. Robert Burleigh,
who left the district, resigned as' a
member of the bvurd, and John McCrln-
dler, of Monic, was atupolnted In his
stead. Mrs. George Ellis was' appoint
ed to succeed Miss Lizzie Monies as
principal of No. 5 school at Mooslc.

The wife of lirakemon Henry drcen
wood, of the Bloomsburg passenger ser
vice, was burled yesterday afternoon
amid many tokens of sympathy. Mr.
Greenwood, who Is left with six chil
dren, has the sincere sympathy of all
the railroaders In his henvy affliction.
William Atkins, of Hickory street,
died .at the iMoses Taylor hospital at
11.80 o'clock last night. Mr. Atkins,
who was a laborer in the Delaware,
Lackawanna and .Western car shops,
was taken to the hospital Wednesday
suffering 'from .heart rouble and a
complication of diseases. From the
first.' his recovery was doubtful, 'but
the physician's made strenuous, efforts
to assist In his reobvery. Mr.' Atkins
was 66 years of age. y ;

bers and has jio outside Interest, there
Is a growing sentiment anions the lead
ers of both factions of the order to de
vise the most feasible way of bridging
over the dissension now existing, and
unite them in one common brotherhood.
County Delegate C. T. Roland, of the
Board of ICrln, was Interviewed by a
Tribune reporter and he asserted that
the sacrifice he would make In bringing
the two bodies together would be to
step down and out from the honorable
position he now holds. It cannot be
said, he stated, that for his part the
greed for otllclal power would stand In
the way of a conse'.'datlon. lie de
clared that he could say the same for
the other gentlemen of the county
board and he prophesied that the time
would be short until the two boards of
the Ancient Order, In this county and
throughout the country, will be united
under one head, as they have always
been united In purpose.

vestigate the deuth of t-year-old Mer
rltt Lawrence, who was killed by a
(ilreet enr last Thursday afternoon on
Adams avenue. Professor' Allan Law
rence, father of the dead ohlld, was not
present, but he was represented by At
torney W. S. Hulslalider. In behulf of
the Traction company Attorney Horace
K. Hand was present. Court Stenog
rapher Willis D. t'ostou took the testi
mony of thu witnesses.
. James Cuutwell, motorinun of tho car
thut ran down the little boy, was first
sworn. He Is an experienced rallroud
man, having been In the buHlneHS for
the past twenty years. He worked for
many years as un employe of the Dela
ware, Luekawanna and Western. His
opinion is that the cur at the time of
the accident was nut running faster
thun live or six miles an hour. The
buy unexpectedly ran on the truck and
Mr. Cuntwell swore that he reversed
the motive power as quickly as he
could, foreseeing thut ttve boy would
hurdly escape from being run over.
The usual signals were sounded before
upprnachlng the Intersection of the
streets, but the boy darted In front of
the car and could not be saved.
Conductor K, D. Barclay of the car
was sworn and testified that he became
aware thut something was w(rong when
he felt the motors being reversed. The
car could not have gone more than
forty or fifty feet after It was reversed
before It stopped.

Thompson and his son, Arthur C.
Thompson, were sworn. They were on
thelrl way down Adams avenue, and the
car was almost at the crossing before
their attention was attracted. They
saw the boy run ahead of the car and
then the accident. Both substantiated
the motorman and conductor with re
gard to the speed of the car. W. B.
Hartley, who was a passenger on the
car, gave testimony regarding the
speed of the car. He saw the boy ahead
and was of the opinion that the acci
dent was unavoidable. The car was
not making excessive headway.
The Jury decided that the death of
the child was purely accidental, and
the motorman was exonerated from all
liability.
