SOUTH SIPE NEWS.
Mrs. Baldwin's Prophecy Caused Troublo
at the Mills-Many Yonng Women Did
Not Oo to Work-Jfotes'and Personals 1 .
(Mrs. Kittle Baldwin is alleged. In one
of her exhibitions of pre-science , at
WllkesnBarre, to have prophesied the-
explosion of boilers on (Monday, April
1, at one of thei mills on the South Side.
The matter was gossiped about all last
week among the employes of the differ
ent mills, end from the levity with
which it had been discussed, it was not
anticipated that any noticeable number
of the employes would take fright and
remain at home. The story was that
Mrs. Baldwin predicted the blowing up
of a silk mill, attended with a fright
ful loss of life; and that the force of
the conoussion. would work havoc in
a steel mill adjoining. This created the
impression that It was the Sauquolt
Silk mill that she had in mind.
In the Sauquolt mill there are about
1,200 employes and yesterday 450 of
them did not come to work. At the
Meadow Brook Silk mill 275 hands are
employed and seventy-three of them
were so frightened that they did not
come to work. At Harvey's Silk mill,
at the Lackawanna Knitting mills and
the Soranton Button factory, where a
large number of young women are em
ployed, Mrs. Baldwin's rumored pro
phecy kept many of them away. Su
perintendent Davis, of the Sauquolt
mill, said yesterday that the nine boil
ers used to generate steam are so regu
lated as to precluda any possibility of
an explosion.

ary, and Indications point to the great
est business that has been done at the

vises that all scats be secured well in
advance, in order that no one who de

spectacle will be disappointed. Scran

'I II . ,
But few people, even of ithose in
timately .connected with the profession
know that K. H. Sothern, the comedian,
who appears here In his new comedy,
"Captain Letterblalr," Friday night at
the Academy of Music, Is e painter of
more than ordinary merit, and has ex
hibited at the Royal English Academy.
Much of his spare time Is still spent
at his easel, but his aversion to what
he terms, "unprofessional advertising,"
leads him to leave the pictures un
signed. Judges of artistic work are
always attracted by 'them, end 'his
greatest praise for them comes from
professional painters, who, by .the way,
he esteems his warmest friends. It is
also a fact, but little known, that but
few of the plays Mr. Sothern produces
have not been bettered by scenes, and
dialogues from his own pen before they
are presented to the public In a num
ber of ways Mr. Sothern Is remarkable,
and modesty is one of them.

is fully cured. New wheat Is now upon the market, and
owing to the excessively dry weather many millers are
of the opinion that it is already cured, and in proper
condition for milling. Washburn-Crosby Co. will take
no risks, and will allow the new wheat fully three
months to mature before grinding.
This careful attention to every detail of milling has
placed Washburn-Crosby Co.'s flour far above other
brands.
