Colonel E. H. Ripple dellverod a lec
ture last evening In the Washburn
Street Presbyterian church on "A Win
ter In Florence Prison; Escape arid
Parole." The Sabbath school room
was crowded, and the auditorium had
to be thrown open to accommodate the
Immense throng. Colonel Klpple was
Introduced by Joseph A. Meats. The
speaker opened with a comparison be
tween Andersonvllle and Florence
prisons and stated that Florence was
the most severe. He thrillitifc-ly de
scribed his escape from the latter and
being tracked In a swamp by blood
hounds. He was recaptured and It was
6nly through the Intercession of a Con
federate that he was not placed in the
dungeon, where he would have prob
ably perished. Many Incidents of prison
life were depicted by the colonel In a
manner which held the closest atten
tion of the audience. When Colonel
Hippie had concluded those present
Joined In singing the patriotic selection.
"My Country 'Tls of Thee." A vote of
thanks was tendered the speaker for his
able discourse and all expressed them
selves well pleased.
James Burke Dead.
James Burke, a very well known resi
dent of the West Side, died yesterday
morning at his home on 2u9 Ninth
treet, after a few weeks illness. Mr.
Burke was born in Ireland and has been
a resident of this city for many years.
He was 50 years of age and possessed
many estimable qualities which won for
him a warm place In the hearts of his
friends.. Four suns and daughters sur
vive him. The funeral will occur Sat
urday morning at D o'clock. Services
will be held In St. Patrick's church. In
terment In the Hyde Park Catholic
cemetery.

The March meeting of the South Side
board of trade will be held this evening.

the betterment of our thoroughfares.
This committee will make n report at
tonight's meeting. A report from the
manufacturers' committee is also forth

A farmer with a wngon-load of youth
ful pigs drove to the South Side yes
terday and found business so brisk that
he disposed of his stock very readily.
He visited several saloons und drank
deep of the llowlng bowl. In coming
down the hill near the Meudow Hrook
breaker, the team got away on hltn
nnd he fell off the wagon. Near the
silk factory a child was nlmost run
over. The team got fagged out haul
ing the wagon. turned upside down, ami
stopped near Kim street. The wagon
was wrecked.

Mrs. Patrick Rrennnn, of Market
street, swore out a warrant before Al
derman Roberts yesterday afternoon
for the arrest of her husband, who
came home drunk and tried to give her
a beating, and to escape from which she
had to leave the house. He was arrest
ed by Patrolman Perry, but owing Id
his drunken condition, could nut receive
a hearing.

Wilbur C. Hollar, of Linden street,
died at the Moses Taylor hospital yes
terday morning at fi o'clock, the cause
of death being apoplexy, Mr. Hollar,
who wus fireman for D. Hund, was on u
trip 'on the Southern division und com
plulned of a severe headache, and ICn
glneer Hand udvlsed him to rest In the
caboose. Hollar declined to do this
und lay down In the cub, where he was
subsequently found by tin; engineer in
un unconscious condition. He was
brought down on Xo. a passenger train
uud taken to the hospital, where his
condition was from the first regarded
as hopeless.

shoulder and doing other damage. He
has been unable to work since and
