JOXES It Was Held la the Sumner Avenue Pres byterian Church Will Assume Charge of His New Flock at Taylor at Once. A farewell reception was tendered to Rev. R. Q. Jones in the Sumner Avenue Presbyterian church last evening. The attendance was large. The meeting was opened with remarks by tile chair man, Bezaleel Davies, who explained the object of the meeting:. Mrs. Daniel Gregory gave a short address referring; to the general good qualities of the pas tor who is about to leave them. In be half of the members present the chair man presented the pastor with "Gib bon's History of Rome." Mr. Jones re sponded feelingly. An address by Dan iel Gregory followed. Harry Holly ren dered a solo in a pleasing manner. The principal address on the departure of Pastor Jones was that of Lewis P. Will iams, who referred with pride to thi time of the organization of the Sumner Avenue church and the call issued to Mr. Jones, their llrst pastor. The lat ter gentleman, he said, came willingly and proved himself the strong pillar which supported them through the trials of organization. Mr. Williams' spech was followed with a solo entitled "Answer," by Miss Cora Phillips. Mrs. Gregory gave an other short address. A solo was ren dered by Miss Annla Williams, after which James Brown spoke. Closing re marks were made by the pastor, and the hymn, "God Be With You," was sung. Refreshments, consisting of cake and coffee, were served by the following ladles: Misses Cora Phillips, Jennie Smith, Kate Gregory, Loretta Stock, Annie Richards. Y., suffered with rheumatism all winter. A neighbor suggested as a remmly that half a dozen bottles of hot water be placed In the bed close to his swollen feet, the water to be as hot as t patient could stand It, Mrs. pettigrew filled half a dozen empty beer bottles with water and placed them In the oven to get warmed. In a few minutes there was a loud ex plosion, which was rapidly followed by several others. The oven doors were blown off anil the pieces sent whirling over the room, and the kitchen was wrecked. Mrs. Pettigrew shrieked and ran out. Mr. Pettigrew yelled, Jumped out of bed and ran across the room and out Into the road. Edward Davis, who waltzed In 'his pulpit, gave Shakes peare Impersonations and indorsed poker. Mr. Coombs says he will come to Oakland, discipline ' the young clergyman and preach the true princi ples of the Christian church. Mr. Davis has lately adopted even ing dress as his pulpit costume on Sun day nights and draws large congrega tions.
