That the Germans know how to hijve a high Jinks time along decorus lines wiis demonstrated last night in Music hall, where the Scranton Llederkranz and Its guests participated in a car nival. It wus not so extensive as the outdoor Mardl Grus of New Orleans, or the fetes of European cities, but the large gathering hud Its fill of fun Just the same. in the assemblage were many women and visiting delegations representing societies of Carboiidale, Wllkes-Harre and tlie Sangorruiide.' Kriodle Vercin and Turners, of this city. How this as semblage for four brief hours played fust and loose with rollicking frolic would he very hard for one who speaks only English to explain.' There was no need of uu Interpreter, however, to understand that the carnival made fun and lots of It. Until midnight the gathering sat ut table, sipped beverages and held its siiles In laughter. The sport all origi nated on the stage, which was set In flaming red, with a tunnel leading to Hades In the background nnd lined with skulls. "Tonight the Devil Is Abroad" appeared In German beneath the proscenium. Along the front of the stage extended a table occupied by an Inquisitorial court whos? especial pur pose seemed t be to decide on the eligi bility of certain candidates for the In fernal regions back of the flaming red. Servants of the Devil. This devil's court consisted of the following: City Controller Wldmayer, Charles Falkowsky, Theodore Miller, Robert Freldetick, Theodore littack, Theodore Klesel. Mr. Buyer and K. Moses. John ilelss and Berthoid Judd were the lrurlcuulns, and Frank llumm ler the president of the evening. The harlequins pranced about through the uisles leading queerly costumed candi dates to the stage. These kept the au dience on the tiptoe of convulsive laugh ter by comic recitations In German, In which prominent local characters were severely scored. Whether the reciters were sent to Hades because they creditably ac quitted themselves or because they did not does not appear. Most of them went into the oven anyhow. The central figures were all gro tesquely attired, and the main body of revellers was distinguished by harle quin caps of many colors. At mid night a feast was served nnd It wan not until the shank of the morning that the merry people started home ward. The whole evening was frequent ly Interspersed with music by Bauer's orchestra.
